Description

Jan. 16, 1951 T. 1. NAKANO AUDIBLE AERIAL TOP Filed Dec. 5, 1947 Inventor THO/MS l.- IVA/64W Attorneys Patented Jan. 16, 1951 AUDIBLE AERIAL TOP Thomas I. Nakano, Papaikou,
Territory of Hawaii Application December 5, 1947, Serial No. 789,791
6 Claims. (01. 46--61) This invention relates to a novel audible toy and constitutes an improvement on my prior U. S.
Letters Patent No. 2,219,236, issued October 22,v
1940 and entitled Musical Toy.
It is a primary object of the present invention to provide a toy having a revolvable body to the ends of which are anchored the ends of a strin or flexible member for suspending said body substantially horizontally therebetween whereby the body can be caused to revolve and wind the string ends onto the end portions of the body when the string is reciprocated vertically.
More particularly, it is an aim of the invention to provide a body formed of a molded resilient material having a chamber therein extending to.
adjacent the ends thereof and which conforms substantially to the external shape of the revolvable body.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a revolvable body which is elongated and tapered toward each end thereof and provided with means whereby the string ends or leads will grip the body when being wound thereon so that the convolutions of the string ends will extend toward the intermediate or central portion of the body.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a hollow resilient body having a whistle' mounted in a "portion of the wall thereof and communicating with the atmosphere and with the body chamber whereby the toy will be ren-. dered audible by the restriction and expansion of the body chamber.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an audible toy having means forming a part of the end portions of the body thereof to cause the string ends to wind thereon toward the central portion of the body for restricting the body chamber.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the followin description of the drawing, illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the toy;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view through the central portion of the body of the toy.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, a
2 V of toward each end to provide the corresponding tapered end portions I each of which terminates in a substantially spherical enlargement or knob 8 which is larger than the adjacent, outer end of the tapered portion I of which said knob or enlargement forms a part.
The body 6 is formed of a molded, resilient material, such as rubber, and is provided with a chamber 9 which extends longitudinally thereof and which is provided with corresponding tapered end portions extending into the tapered ends 1. The molded body 6 is internally thickened as seen in Figure 2 on either side of the intermediate portion of the chamber 9 to provide corresponding internal annular ribs or enlargements I0. Between the ribs or enlargements ID a portion of the wall of the body 6 is provided with an opening I I in which is anchored a whistle l2 of the type which will be sounded when air is forced therethrough, preferably in either direction.
The central portion of the exterior of the body 6 preferably has a picture l3 molded therein. The exterior of the tapered ends are preferably provided with grooves l4 extending therearound and arranged in cross relationship for providing a roughened surface at each end of the body 6, for a purpose which will hereinafter become apparent. The tapered end portions 1 may also be provided with projections I8 to additionally roughen the ends of the body 6, or said projections may be utilized alone in lieu of the grooves l4.
The end portions or leads l5 of a flexible member such as a cord or string, designated generally iii, are suitably tied or anchored at their terminals to the outer ends of the tapered body por- .tions 1 inwardly of but adjacent the knobs 8, as
seen at H, in a manner so that the body 6 cannot rotate relatively to said anchored portions ll.
- The cord or string I6 is grasped at an intermediate point for supporting the body 6 in substantially a horizontal position, as illustrated in Figure 1 after which the body 6 can be rotated on its longitudinal axis for winding the string ends or leads [5 onto the tapered body ends 1. The body 6 novel audible toy in its entirety and which comprises the invention is designated generally 5 and includes an elongated body, designated generally 6 of substantially circular cross sectional shape and which tapers from the central portion therecan then be released and by reciprocating the string or cord I6 vertically said body will be wound onto and off of the string ends [5, first in one direction and then in the other. The grooves M will afiord a good gripping surface for the string ends l5 and so that they will not slide relatively to the tapered body ends 1 and will be wound inwardly thereon and toward the central portion of the body 6. A rapid deceleration of the translational movement of the body 6 justprior to completion of its downward movement and be- 3. A toy as in claim 1, the end portions of said body being roughened for affording a good gripping surface for the cord ends to cause the cord ends to wind spirally thereon toward the central portion of the body for compressing said central portion and restricting the chamber thereof.
4. A toy of the character described comprising an elongated body formed of a molded, compressible material of circular cross section and having of the body in which the chamber 9 is formed will tend to compress said portion and restrict chamber 9 for again expelling air therefrom and actuating the whistle l2. The internally thickened ribs It] will balance the body 6 for better maintaining it in a horizontalposition while it is revolving and reciprocating upwardly and downwardly.
Various modifications and changes are contem- "if; plated: and may obviouslyrbe resorted to; without r departing from. the spirit or scope 'of thezinven- :tion as; hereinafter defined by the" appended :rzzlaims,
I' claim as my invention: 1. An audible toy ofrthe-character described comprisinganelongatedihollow body formed of a -molded, 'resilient material and having" tapered ends,a cord secured at'its ends to the ends of said body; said body beingprovided witha chamber extending longitudinally thereof and having tapered '"end portions extending into the tapered ends of said body, and'awhistle mounted insaid body intermediate of its" ends and communicating 'with .said chamber andwith the atmosphere, said body being revolved for .winding the ends of thecord .l on the tapered ends of the body and for unwinding the cord ends therefrom wherebyv the deceleration and acceleration ofv the translational move- .,.-ment of said bodywill cause it to be compressed andexpanded, respectively, for restricting and ex hpanding theachamber. forflforcin'g the air outwardly and inwardly, respectively through the whistle.
2.: A toy as'in claim 1, said cord being adapted to be engagedintermediate of-itsends for sup- -porting the .body in substantially ahorizontal 1 position and for causing the cord ends to be "wound onto and off of the tapered ends of the body as the cord is reciprocated vertically, and the rapid deceleration of the translational movement of. said body as it approaches the lower extremity :of its movement-functioning to compress thebody and restrict the chamber thereof.
corresponding tapered ends, a string having its ends anchored to the tapered ends of said body and adapted to be manually supported intermediateof its ends for supporting the body in substantially a horizontal position whereby the cord ends will be wound onto and unwound from the i tapered ends of the body when the cord is recipro- Wcated vertically, said body having an elongated chamber extending longitudinally thereof, and a whistle mounted in a portion of said body and communicating with the intermediate portion of? the chamber and with the atmosphere and adapted tobeactuated by air passing therethrough, said body being compressed upon deceleration of the translational movement thereof as it approaches the lowerextremity of its movement for restricting the chamber and-expelling the air therefrom through the whistle and being thereafter returned to anormal expanded position by its resilience for enlarging said chamber 'to'its normal size and'whereby the whistlewill be actuated by the air. passinginwardly therethrough.
5.A toy as in claim 4', the tapered ends of said body being roughened for affording agripping surface for the cord ends for causingsaid ends to be wound spirally on thebody.
6. A toy as in claim 4, the tapered endsof said body being roughened for affording a." gripping surface for the cord ends for causing said ends to be wound spirally on the body, for compressing the bodyand restricting the chamber'as the cord ends are wound onto the intermediate portion of the body.
