- metal puttyless skylights.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved form of sheet metal puttyless skylight construction in which a thoroughly waterproof skylight will be provided, and in which the use of putty on the joints between the several parts of the skylight will be eliminated.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved sheet metal puttyless skylight construction including a ridge and a plurality of laterally extendin downwardly sloping glass supporting bars attached thereto, with plates of glass supported by said bars to provide watertight joints which may be secured in'various degrees of tension.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved sheet metal puttyless skylight which will be highly eflicient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds. v
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application:
Figure l is a top plan view of the improved sheet metal puttyless skylight;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding arts. p In carrying out the invention, there is provided a skylight frame of substantially rectangular shape being generally designated by the reference numeral l, to which the usual triangular shaped fiat sheet metal ends (not shown) are attached in the customary manner.
The skylight includes a longitudinally extending ridge cap 2 of inverted V-shape and a plurality of oppositely disposed integrally formed spaced downwardly extending inverted U-shape ridge caps 3 having oppositely extending parallel edge flanges 3 and 5, and being apertured at spaced points 6 for receiving the holding bolts later to be described. Said inverted U-shape ridge caps 3 will extend in opposite relation and at right angles to said longitudinally extending ridge cap 2.
The oppositely disposed W-shaped bottom gutters 7 are formed with the inturned side locking flanges 8 and 9 in which the upwardly and outwardly angled flanges l0 and II of the glass supporting bars 12 are anchored and received.
The bars l2 are formed with the parallel vertical sides I3 and [4 which are bent inwardly and downwardly as at l5 and i6, and are then extended upwardly in parallel relation as at H and I8, being connected together by the central rib or flange I 9.
Substantially rectangular shaped panes of onequarter inch rough wire glass 20 are disposed upon the upper ends or flanges of the bars l2, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, with their adjacent edges extending nearto or abutting the vertical portions I1 and E8 of the bars I2.
At intervals of thirty inches or so, inverted U- shaped reinforcement members 2! are inserted in the hollow bars l2 in contact with the inner surfaces of the sides 13 and I4 thereof. The cross portions 22 of the reinforcement members 2! are apertured to receive the securing'bolts 23 which extend upwardly through said cross portions 22 and between the vertical portions [l and i8 of said bars 12.
Strips of sheet lead 24 are placed over the adjacent edges of the glass panes 20, and are formed with apertures to permit the bolts 23 to pass therethrough and through the U-shaped ridge caps 3.
A ridge will be formed of sheet metal and will consist of a single piece of metal bent to provide two oppositely disposed downwardly angled U- shaped clip members 21 and 28, whose lower sides are bent back under and are connected together at 29 to provide an inverted V-shaped ridge. The sides of the U-shaped clip members 21 and 28 will lie respectively under the W-shaped gutters 1 and over the panes of glass 20 and the strips of lead 24 at the upper ends thereof adjacent the ridge of the skylight.
The lower ends of the ridge caps 3 are bent downwardly as at 34 to provide headers for the cap.
A metal curb 35 extends upwardly at the outer side edges of the skylight, being bent upon itself to underlie the gutters 1, and is bent upwardly and outwardly as at 36 and 3! respectively, and again upwardly at 38 to support the two inch wide L-shaped lugs 39 whose outer ends engage the lower ends of the panes of glass 20, and extend through slots 40 formed in the upper end or portion of the metal curb 35. The terminal end of the portion 38 of the curb 35 is bent upon itself at 4| to provide additional strength and rigidity to this part.
An elongated opening 42 is provided between the header 34 for the ridge caps 3 and the adjacent lugs 39 to take care of condensation occurring in the skylight.
Through bolts i' 3 will extend through the metal curb 35, being held by a lock Washer 44 disposed thereon, and will extend upwardly through the lugs 39 and through the glass 20 and lead strips 24, being secured again by the. loci:
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been devised andrpr ovided 9, highly efficient form of sheet metal puttyless skylight construction which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture andtproduce.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has: been illustrated and described, it will be understood thatit is not intended to limit-the scopeof the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A skylight comprising a plate having rectangular openings therein for glass panes,parallel glass supporting bars parallel opposingsides of said openings, said bars being 'generally inverted U-shaped in cross-section, said arms having outwardly angled flanges at the lower edge portions of the arms, a W-shaped gutter having inturned locking flanges rigidly engaged with said outwardly angled flanges, said arms having parallel vertical sides with inwardly and downwardly bent portions at the top edges of said sides, upwardly extending portions 0n the inner edges of said inwardly and downwardly extending portions, said upwardly extending portions having a connecting rib, a plurality of inverted U-shaped reinforcement members rigidly secured to andbetweensaid sides, bolts extending through said reinforcement members and through said connecting rib, and ridge caps integral with said plate and defining said openings therein, said ridge cans of inverted U-shaped cross-section extending parallelvto said bars and spaced therefrom, saidbolts also passing through said ridge caps and having nuts whereby the ridge caps REEERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the me of this Pa ent:
