FRANKLIN A. SMITH, JR, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE HEATON BUTTON FASTENER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,635, dated February 14, 1882.
Application filed December 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN A. SMITH, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inButton-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a button-fastener of a simplified and novel construction, whereby the shank of the button may be readily connected to said fastener and applied to any desired article of wearing-apparel in the simplest and best possible manner; and it consists of a fastening device formed with fasteningprongs and provided with a loop or neck for receiving and holding the eye or shank of the button, and with a flat table or projection standing at right angles to the base of said loop on one side, which is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the leather or other material to which it may be attached, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents an enlarged perspective view of my improved fastener attached to the eye or shank of a button; Fig 2, a similar view of the fastener with the button removed therefrom; Fig. 3, the blank from which said fasteneris formed; Fig. 4, a side view of the fastener as applied to the button and fabric; Fig. 5, a modification of my improved device, and Fig. 6 the blank from which said modified form of fastener is made.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
My improved fastener is formed from the blank shown in Fig. 3, andis provided with a front and rear prong, B B, both being thinned to an edge at their points to enable them to readily penetrate thematerial to which the fastener and button are designed to be attached,
and to be turned back into said material by -D, which stands at right angles to said neck or loop 0 and to the rear prong, B, and which is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the material to which the device is to be attached, as fully shown in Fig. 40f the drawings.
In the operation of attaching the button to the desired article of wearing-apparel the eye or shank of the same is slipped over the front prong, B, and up into the loop or neck 0, and the parts thus connected are then placed in a slot in the upper jaw of the usual setting-instrument, with the prongs B B projecting downward. The material to which the fastener and button are to be attached is then'inserted between the jaws of the setting-instrument, and the prongs forced downward and through the fabric, and then turned back again into the under side of the same by a die in the lower jaw of the said setting-instrument, in a manner well known. The prongs B B, after passing through the said material or fabric, may be turned or bent toward the plate or table D or in a reverse direction to each other, as may be deemed most preferable.
A modification of my invention is shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which the rear prong, B, is dispensed with, the plate or table D serving as a means for preventing the eye or shank of the button from slipping off or becoming detached from the neck (3, and the single prong B adapted to be clinched through and into the fabric in a manner well known.
By means of my improvements I am enabled to produce a button-fastener of a compact and simplified construction, requiring but little I am aware of the patent granted to George W. Prentice underd'ate of September 10, 1878, and numbered 207,818, and do not desire to claim the construction shown therein but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. The herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the two prongs B B, provided respectively with an eye or loop, 0, and a table or plate, D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein-described blank for'buttonfasteners consisting of the plate provided with a front and rear prong, an intermediate neck or 100p, and an enlarged base or table, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
