' UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. MANN, OF HELENA, MONTANA TERRITORY.
GlRTH ATTACHM ENT FOR SADDLE-TREES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,401, dated February '7, 1882.
Application filed September 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beitknown that I, WILLIAM MADISON MANN, of Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke, Montana Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Girth Attachments'for Saddle-Trees and I do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation of my improved girth attachment for saddletrees.
Myinvention relates to improvementsin that class of girth attachments to saddle-trees in which two leather straps provided with girthrings at their ends are wrapped, one around 'the horn and the other around the cantle of the tree. In this construction the rings on each side of the tree are connected together by straps, and the opposite rings, hanging down on each side of the tree, are connected by two girths passing under the belly of the horse. This construction of saddle is used by herders on the western plains, and is objectionable, as the cumbrous leather straps are in the way of the rider, and the one wrapped around the hornof the saddle becomes quickly worn through by the lasso wrapped around the horn of the In the accompanying drawing, A represents a saddle-tree of the usual construction. On each side of the saddle-tree, near its ends and opposite each other, are secured by rivets, screws, or other suitable fastenings, the metallic forked or bifurcated straps a a. The metallic forked straps on a do not extend over the saddletree, so that the horn of the saddle is left entirely free for wrapping the lasso around it, and each forked metallic strap carriesa ring, b, at its lower end, the rings b oneach side of the tree lying opposite each other. The rings on each side are connected together by a leather strap, 0. The girths d d are attached to the rings b b on one side of the tree, pass thence under the belly of the horse, and are secured to the opposite rings oh the other side of the saddle-tree in the usual manner. struction is cheaper and more durable than the usual one, the forked straps acting as braces, and the leather straps wrapped around thehoru and cantle, inconveniencing the rider, are dispensed with and the horn left entirely free for wrapping the lasso around it.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a saddle -tree, of the forked metallic straps a a, secured t0 the the tree near its ends and on each side thereof, and provided with rings 1) b at their ends, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the saddle-tree A, of the forked metallic straps a a, secured to the tree, as set forth, and not extending as high as the horn of the tree, rings 1) b,-straps c, and girths d (l, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM MADISON MANN.
