4 Claims. (01. 153-48) The invention relates to a bending apparatus including a plate or table, a laterally rigid template member against which a bar or the like is to be shaped by bending while resting on the plate, and a pin constructed to be mounted on the plate and to provide a backing for the template member.
A primary object of the invention is to provide an improved pin structure which is arranged to present its template-engaging head portion at difierent adjusted. distances from the axis of the stem portion of the pin which is engaged in a socket or hole of a bending plate.
Another object is to provide for a. ready adjustment of the templateeengaging head portion with respect to the stem portion of the pin.
A further object is to provide a pin structure such that the line of thrust against it may be radial to its stem axis.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth or be apparent in the following description of a typical embodiment of the invention, and in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a plan view showing stake pins embodying the present invention in cooperative use in sockets of a bending plate.
Figure 2 is a section at the line 22 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section on the line 3-3 in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view of the assembly of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view at the line 5-5 in Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a section at the line 66 in Figure 3.
As particularly shown, pins 8 embodying the features of my invention are mounted on a bending plate 9 for backing a template member Ii against the pattern edge i2 of which an initially straight bar I3 is to be shaped by bending while the table supports the template and bar. The table 9 is of a usual structure for its purpose and comprises a relatively thick plate provided with lines of holes i i extending transversely therethrough and providing sockets for receiving the stems or bases of pins 8; in the present instance the sockets [4' are of rectangular (square) and like and uniform cross-section.
One or more thrust jacks of suitable structure may be mounted on the table 9 in appropriate position thereon for the application of their heads against a bar to be bent to conformity with the pattern edge face !2 of a template II, or another, which is disposed upon the table. As particularly illustrated, a pneumatic jack l5 has its working head I6 applied against the side or edge of a bar l3 opposite that which engages the ends of the template. Air under pressure is supplied to the jack through a hose l"! connected with a suitable source (not shown) of compressed air, and the actuation of the jack is controlled by a hand valve l8 thereof.
The base of the jack I5 is provided with a transverse hole at its rear side for complementarily receiving the shank of a headed round pin 2! to depend below the jack base. A bushing member 22 complementarily mounted in a socket Hi rotatively and fittedly receives the depending portion of the pin 2|, whereby the pin provides a swiveled and anchored connection of the jack to the plate at the socket; in this manner, the jack may be adjustably' swung about the pin 2| for directing the line of action of the jack head against the bar in a line which is substantially perpendicular to the bar l3 thereat. For use in the present sockets I l, the bushing 22 is provided at its upper end with an out-turned flange 22' for supporting the mounted bushing from the top of the plate.
It will now be noted that a stake pin 8 essenv tially comprises a stem or shank 23 hingedly mounting a head member 24 opposite an upper head-end portion 23 of the stem, and having its lower portion 23 swiveled in a bushing member 25 which is exteriorly formed for its complementary and removable disposal in any plate socket l4. While the lower stem portion 23" is cylindrical for its rotation in the complementary axial bore of a bushing 25, the head portion 23 of the present stem 23 is of rectangular crosssection and is at least as thick as the portion 23" whereby it extends, at least at its corners, beyond the circle of the latter portion. In the present structure, the cross-section of the stem head portion 23' is the same as that of the bushing member 25 which receives the lower stem portion 23".
A washer member 26 receives the stem portion 23" therethrough and is engaged against the overhang of the head portion 23 of the stem for supporting the pin assembly from the top face of the table. As particularly shown, the washer 26 is cut away at one side in a chord line parallel to the flat upper stem portion face opposite the head member 24 to permit the swinging of the latter into close proximity to said head face while it is close to the top table face; this preferred Washer form is brought out in Figure 5. A suitable means is provided for retaining the mounted washer member for rotation with the stem 23; in the present instance, a short upper part of the stem portion 23 has a square section having its sides equal to the diameter of the remaining cylindrical part of the stem portion for effecting a rotation of the washer 25 with the stem. In order to provide for full clearance between" the top of the plate 9 and the head member. 124, the bushing 25 is preferably supported from the lower end of the stem portion 23". The head member 24 is-hinged. to the'stem -23at an axis parallel toand well above the top faceof the table. As particularly. shown, transversely spaced. ears 21 at the topof the member 24-receive an ear 28 at .the-.topof the-stem 23 between them, and a hinge-pin 29 engaged through said. ears providesthe hinged. connection. of the mem.-. ber 24-with thestem 23,- the axis-of hinging. being parallel to-that face of theheadportion 235 of the stem which is-opposite the member 24. A bolt 3| is threadedly engaged. transversely through the head portion of the stem 23 to have itsfree end. engaged by the member. 2 1, the other end of :the' bolt.3l being arranged for engagement fora turning-of the boltto adjust the angular relation of the member 24 to the stem, and so adjustthe template-engaging face of the member with re-v spectto the stem axis; inthis manner, the face.

Having the template appropriately backed by use of the: present stake pins, one or more jacks 15. are operatedagainst aworkpiece, as abar l3, placed .opposite the template face- 12, to shape the bar to thetemplate face 12in a wellunderstood manner.
Fromthe foregoing description. taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, the advantages of thepresentdevice.willbereadily understoo'd-by those skilled lathe-art towhich the invention appertains. While I have described the features and principles of operation of a structure which I now consider to comprise a preferred embodiment of my invention, I desire to have it un derstood that the showing is primarily illustrative, and that such changes may be made, when desired, as fall within the scope of the following claims.
I claim? 1. In apparatusfor bending bars and'the like, a work-supporting plate, a free template member resting upon the plate, a pin extending upwardly from theplate in fixed position thereon adjacent the template member, and a head member hingedl'y mounted'on: said pin for swinging adjustment abovethe plate about an axis parallel to the plate and providing an upright bearing face for backing'engagement with the template during the bending of a bar or the like against the template, said-axis of adjustment of the .head memberb'eing above the template.
2. In apparatus for bending bars and the like, a.
work-supporting plate, a free template member restingauponitheplate, a pin extending upwardly from the plate in .fixed position thereon adjav cent the template, a head member hinged on said;
pin for swinging adjustment about an axis parallel to-the plate and above the template and providing an upright forward bearing face for backing engagement by the template during the bending of a bar or the like against the template, and a thrust screw engaged-through the pin below the axis of adjustment of the head and operative againstthe rear face of-the head member for setting to adjust thespacing of the template-engaging point of the head from the pin-axis.-
3. In apparatus'for 'bending. bars and the like, a work-supporting plate, a free template member resting upon the plate, a pin extending upwardly from the: plate in fixed position thereon adjacent the template, a head member hinged on said pin for swinging adjustment about an axis parallel tothe plate andappreciably above the template and providing an upright forward bearing face for backingengagement by'the template during the bending of a bar or the like against the tem-- plate, and a head-adjusting means carried by the pin. and adjustably operative against the rear face of the head member at a point thereof below the axis of'adjustment of the headto adjust the spacing of the template-engaging point of the head from-the pin axis.
4. A structure in accordance with claim 3 having thethrust point of the thrust means above the template-engaging point of the head.
