Description

Dec. 5, 1950 D. c. M KENZIE ARTICLE OR PACKAGE CARRIER Filed Oct. 18, 1948 Dona/a 0. McKenzie Patented Dec. 5, 1950 ARTICLE R PACKAGE CARRIER Donald C. McKenzie, Minneapolis, Minn.
Application October 18, 1948, Serial N 0. 55,056
5 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in carriers for packages or articles and more particularly to a body supported carrier of this character.
An important object of the invention is to provide a package or article carrier suspended from the shoulder of a person by means of a shoulder strap and including vertical and horizontal plates on which the package or article rests and which may be folded one against the other, when not in use, or conveniently carrying the same in a purse or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article carrier of this character which is simple and practical in construction, strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the carrier in position on a person;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the carrier in open position removed from the person;
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on a line 3--3 of Figure 2 and;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the hinged or folded connection for the plates.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numerals 5 and 6 designate a pair of plates which may be constructed of light weight metal or other suitable rigid material, the plate 6 having a pair of slots 1 adjacent one edge for receiving substantially hook-shaped tongues 8 projecting from one edge of plate 5.
The tongues 8 are loosely received in the slots 1 and are curved inwardly against the underside of plate 6 to support plate 6 in a horizontal position while plate 5 occupies a vertical position as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. The plate 6 is free to swing upwardly against plate 5 into a folded position, when not in use.
The upper edge of plate 5 is also provided with pair of slots 9 and the front edge of plate It! is similuarly provided with a pair of slots ID to receive a strap 1 I having its ends secured together by a buckle [2.
The strap extends through slots 9 and ID in a parallel arrangement behind plate 5 and under plate 6 to provide a shoulder engaging loop [3 above plate 5 and to provide a hand gripping loop l4 forwardly of plate 6.
The openings in the plates 5 and 6 may be formed with teeth l5, if desired, to prevent slipping of the strap therein.
In the use of the invention the plates 5 and 6 are swung into an open position as shown in the drawings and the shoulder strap l3 engaged over the shoulder of a person to support the plates 5 and 6 in front of the person adjacent the waistline to thus provide a shelf on which a bag of groceries or other article may be supported for conveniently carrying the same. The hand strap I4 is gripped by the hand oi the person to aid in holding the package on the shelf.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in the art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to. certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A carrying device comprising a pair of plates hingedly connected to each other for swinging into and out of a position at right angles to each other, an endless strap attached to said plates, and loops formed by the strap and extending outwardly from the free edges of said plates, one of said loops forming a shoulder strap and the other of said loops forming a hand gripping strap.
2. A carrying device comprising a pair of plates hingedly connected to each other, a stop on one plate engaging the reverse side of the other plate to hold one plate horizontally while the other plate is vertical, a shoulder strap attached to said vertical plate and a hand strap attached to said horizontal plate.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said straps are continuous.
4. A carrying device comprising an article supporting member, a strap attached to and underlying the member and extending outwardly therefrom in opposite directions, and loops at the outer ends of the strap, one of said loops constituting y 2, 533, 1 3 5 3 4 p a shoulder strap and the other loop constituting a REFERENCES CITED hand grippirlg strap; The following references are of record in the 5.
