In order to remove the cover from the luggage or to install the same thereon, it is desirable that the slide-fastener controlled openings in the end panels open for a short distance beneath the pote ag: e the luggage. While this m e attemt ed a inwardly nding. lon dinal s i iat e ctter portion of bs main ne it ha been noted that such expedient results in scalp ening of the cover structure and consequent accidental tearing thereof as the same is installed or removed.
The present invention provides a structure wherein the desired extent of slide-fastener controlled opening is achieved without weakening of the main panel.
It is therefore an important object of this invention to provide a luggage cover wherein a slide-fastener controlled opening extends underneath the ends of the luggage covered thereby to facilitate removal and installation of the cover.
It is a further important object of this invention to achieve the desired result of easy removal and installation without weakening the cover structure.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the specification and the accompanying drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) is shown on the drawings and hereinafter more fully des c ribed.
On the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective showing a piece of luggage with the improved cover of this inven' tion applied thereto, the perspective view being 2 Such in?! W ii f fi l of 5? As shown on the drawings:

This 'much of the construction shown is standard and usual in luggage covers.
The ends of the luggage cover are completed by identical end panel portions l2 and [3, the outer edges of which are secured by stitching or in any suitable manner to the outer edges of the main panel II as shown at M. The adjacent inper edges of the end panels [2 and I3 and the adjacent ends of the main panel II are removably joined together by a slide fastener 15 of standard and well known construction, the joining teeth of such slide fastener being shown at [5a.
In order to permit of an extension of the slide fastener !5--l5a beneath the luggage, to facilitate installation and removal of the cover without weakening the main panel H, said main panel I l is so cut that the central portion of the edge thereof which extends across the bottom of the luggage is provided with a curved inwardly extending portion IS in which complementary outwardly extending portions I! of the end panels l2 and it are engaged. In assembling the luggage cover these outwardly extending portions I! are engaged beneath the edge of the end panel ll directly inside the curved portion IS, a reinforcing portion I 8 of leather or other suitable material having a curved recess corresponding to the portion l8 and being engaged thereover and over the main panel at each end of the bottom of the cover, the parts when so assembled being secured firmly in associated relationship by stitching shown at I!) and 20. In order to protect the bottom of the luggage cover from scufiing or injury, suitable studsZl are secured in the reinforced portion I8, cushions 2B of felt or similar material being secured inside the cover between the studs and the bottom of the luggage I0.
As will be noted from the foregoing, the construction of this invention provides a luggage cover wherein the slide fastener l may be moved in opening the cover to points well underneath the luggage covered thereby. This is accomplished without weakening the main panel II and by reason of the complementary relationship of the extensions l! on the end panels with the recessed portions H; of the main panel.
As shown in Fig. 3 in dotted lines, the slide fastener at each end-may be moved to a position well underneath the luggage Ill. This provides a suificient opening to facilitate easy removal and installation of the cover.
It is understood that details of construction may be varied without departing from the principles of this invention and it is, therefore, not intended to limit the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a luggage cover a main panel having inwardly curved portions forming a recess at the central portion of each side thereof and having its ends positioned adjacent each other, pairs of end panels secured to the sides of the main panel, inner edges of each pair of said end panels being positioned adjacent each other, an integral curved extension on a terminal portion of each of said end panels, said curved extensions interfitting with the curved portions of the main panel, and slide fasteners for securing the adjacent edges of the end panels together, said slide fasteners extending to the terminal portions of the end panels and into the recesses in the main panel.
2. In a luggage cover a main panel having an inwardly curved portion forming a recess at the central portion of a side thereof and having its ends positioned adjacent each other, pairs of end panels secured to the sides of the main panel, inner edges of each pair of said end panels being positioned adjacent each. other, an integral curved extension on a terminal portion of each end panel of at least one pair of said end panels, said curved extension interfitting with the curved portion of the main panel, and slide fasteners for securing the adjacent edges of the end panels together, at least one of said slide fasteners extending to the terminal portions of said one pair of end panels and extending into the recess in the main panel.
3. In the luggage cover of claim 1, a reinforcing strip having a curved recess and being engaged over the outside of the main panel where the same joins the terminal portions of the end panels, means for securing said reinforcing strips, the main panel and the terminal portions of the end panels in fixed relationship, and said slide fasteners also securing the adjacent edges of the main panel together.
4. In the luggage cover of claim 1, reinforcing means secured to the edges of the main panel adjacent the points of juncture thereof with the terminal portions of the end panels, supporting studs secured to and projecting outwardly from said reinforcing means, luggage cushioning means on the inside of said main panel opposite each of said studs, and said slide fasteners also securing the adjacent edges of the main panel together.
