Claims.
This invention relates to hammer mill hammers of the two-part type, comprising a shank and a separate tip which is designed to be removed when worn and to be replaced by a new or unworn tip, and has generally in View to provide a hammer mill hammer of this type embodying an improved interlocking connection between the tip and the shank, whereby the tip normally is retained firmly, positively and securely upon the shank and yet is readily removable and replaceable whenever desired while the shank remains operatively mounted in the mill. More particularly, a special and important object of the invention is to provide a hammer mill hammer of the type mentioned in which the interlocking connection between the tip and the shank of the hammer is so designed that blows struck by the hammer tend to maintain and to intensify a firm, rigid assembly of the tip with the shank.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will become more fully apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in a hammer mill hammer of the type mentioned embodying the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as are illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings and as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the different views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hammer mill hammer constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the outer end portion of the shank of the hammer; and
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the hammer tip.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates, generally, the shank of the present hammer and B designates, generally, the hammer tip which is separate from said shank and removably, replaceably mounted thereon for the reasons aforementioned.
In accordance with the invention, the outer end portion of the shank A has formed therein and extending preferably entirely thereacross and opening through the front thereof a recess l0. Also, in accordance with the invention, the outer end portion of the shank A isprovided, outwardly of the .recess ID, with a forwardly projecting tongue H which likewise extends preferably entirely across said shank. Further, in accordance with the invention, the recess it is of rearwardly tapering form and the tongue II is of rearwardly flaring form. In addition, the outer end face of the shank A preferably is inclined rearwardly and outwardly, and the outer end portion of said shank has projecting laterally from each side thereof, adjacent to its rear edge, a lug l2 which preferably is of rearwardly flaring form.
The tip B is composed of a bottom or outer end wall it, a front wall I l and side walls [5, which are spaced apart to accommodate between them the outer end portion of the shank A. As best shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, the tip B is open at its inner end and at its rear so that it is engageable with the outer end portion of the shank A by rearward movement relative to the latter.
The inner face of the bottom or outer end wall l3 of the tip B is rearwardly and outwardly ininclined corresponding substantially to the rearward and outward inclination of the outer end of the shank A so as to engage the latter more or less throughout its length. On the other hand,
the outer face of said bottom wall I3 is arcuately curved from front to rear about an axis located in, or in a continuation of, the transverse, central plane of the shank A, with the result that said bottom wall is of rearwardly tapering form and is composed of a greater amount of metal at its front end, where maximum wear of the tip occurs, than at its rear end where a lesser amount of wear occurs.
The front wall Hi of the tip B has formed therein and opening through the rear thereof a rearwardly flaring recess Hi.- In addition, said front wall is provided, inwardly of said recess it, with a rearwardly projecting, rearwardly tapered lug ii.
The recess It is designed to accommodate the tongue I! of the shank A and the recess ID of said shank is designed to accommodate the tongue ll of the tip B, and said tongues and recesses are of sizes and shapes so that said tongues have wedging engagement in said recesses as a result of rearward movement of the tip B to its operative or applied position relative to the shank A.
Formed in the side walls I5, l5 of the tip B are recesses it, Hi which open through the rear edges of said side walls and which are located and are of sizes and shapes to receive the lugs i2 when the tip B is operatively applied to the shank A.
