Description

28, 1950 G. c. ADALBERT 2,531,49
AUTOMATIC FIRE EXTINGUISHER FOR MOTOR CARBURETORS' Filed Feb. 14, 1947 Patented Nov. 28, 1950 AUTOMATIC FIRE EXTINGUISHER FOR MOTOR CARBURETORS Georg Christian Adalbrt, Stabekk, near Oslo, Norway Application February 14, 1947, Serial No. 728,586 In Norway February 23, 1944 Section 1, Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 Patent expires February 23, 1964 2 Claims. 1
The present invention has for its object an apparatus for automatic and instantaneous extinguishing of carburator fires.
There are known different kinds of apparatuses for this purpose in which the heat from the carburator fire is utilized for burning or melting a safety fuse for a fire extinguishing medium in the form of a gas or a liquid which is spread against the fire under pressure.
The present invention'is based on the use of a fire extinguishing medium in solid form placed in a container immediately above the carburator or the air filter in such a manner that the contents of the container will, without the use of pressure, be spread over the place where the fire has started so as to extinguish the same.
A preferred form of the invention is diagrammatically illustrated on the drawing.
l is the carburator and 2 the air filter located above the same.
Immediately above the air filter there is placed a container 3 for a solid fire extinguishing medium such as bicarbonate of sodium or the like, and the bottom of this container consists of a double trap, the two parts 4, 5 of which are hinged at 6 and l and are maintained in a closed position by means of a combustible safety thread attached between downwardly extending arms 9, 10 secured to the flaps 4, 5 of the trap.
As soon as a fire breaks out, the safety thread 8 will burn thru, and the trap 4, 5 will then open and drop the contents of the container 3 on the place of fire.
I claim:
1. Apparatus for automatically extinguishing fires in carburators of internal combustion engines comprising a container for fire extinguishing material located above a carburator, the bottom of said container being provided with horizontal outlet fiaps maintained in closed position by means of a heat frangible element, said flaps being pivoted in such a manner that when the said element is broken said flaps pivot downwards and direct a stream current of the extinguishing material against the carburator located therebelow.
2. Apparatus for automatically extinguishing fires as claimed in claim 1, said pivoted flaps being provided with downwardly extending arms, said frangible element being secured to said arms in such a manner that it is located immediately above that part of a carburator where a fire is likely to start.
