To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ronnnr Boson, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and residing at Stuttgart, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Benzin-Washstands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a safety washstand for washing with benzin and other inflammable liquids in which a vessel filled with sand, ashes or the like is placed over the wash basin, and arranged so that it opens automatically and empties its contents over the wash basin when the benzin contained therein ignites. For this purpose, according to the invention, the sand box is provided with folding bottom plates which are supported by two levers held together by a strin made of easily inflammable material. hould the benzin ignite, the flame would burst upward and ignite the cord, so that the lever will fly upward and release the two bottom plates.
In order to avoid the splashing of the benzin and outburst of the flame, upon opening the folding lids, a sieve is "provided above the folding lids, which retards the descent of the sand and prevents it from dropping too suddenly on the working table. In place of a sieve a protecting wall of tin or the like'may be attached to the washstand, the wall. being automatically drawn up the instant the folding bottom plates are lowered so that the benzin holder is shut off from the outside. In order to further insure safety, the washbasin is preferably supported on a perforated tin plate, so that all superfluous or splashing benzin may drain off through a funnel secured beneath the tin plate into a non-explosive can below.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view partly in section; Fig. 2 a side view, partly in section; Fig. 3 is a crosssection 011 line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
A is a washbasin resting on a perforated tin plate 13 which rests on brackets C. The benzin, which during the washing operation spills or drains 0d, flows through a funnel D into the nonexplosive can E.
F is a closed chest or box, whose bottom K is a sieve. The bottom is scaled from beneath by two lids J and J attached at the sides thereof, and whose inner edges rest on the flat heads I I, of the shorter arms of two angle levers H H. The longer arms of the two angle levers H H are connected together at their lower ends by an easily ignitible string G. The chest or box F is filled with sifted dry sand, ashes or other non-inflammable material, such that it will flow unhinderedthrough the sieve K as soon as the lids J and J drop down. When the benzin in the vessel A ignites, the flames burst upward and burn the strin G which holds down the two levers H I- The levers are therefore freeto shoot upward in the direction of the arrows, and the two folding bottom plates J and J swing down, so that the sand drops through the sieve K and extinguishes the fire.
On both sides of the washstand, beneath the lower ends of levers H H, are journaled the rods M on which the upwardly extending arms L are fastened in such manner that they project. in the path of travel of levers H H. At the front of the washstand on the rods M, are latches L The noses of the latches lie in corresponding notches in pull rods N which are slidably mounted on the frame of the washstand. The rods N carry weights Q and are suspended by strings S 3,, which are led over small pulleys S S and carry a vertically movable screen Q, guided by stationary rods U. On the lower guiding brackets, in which the rods N N slide, coiled springs P are preferably employed. When the string G is burned, the levers H H are disconnected and swing upward due to the weight of the sand loaded on the bottom plates J J On their travel they turn the arms L and the rods M, and thereby release the latches L,. Then the rods N N with the weights 0 9 drop down, their fall being cushioned by the springs P P, and pull the door or screen Q up to a stop V, so that they shut off the compartment containing the washing vessel A. In order to guard nearby persons from the action of levers H H, bows W W are attached to both sides of the washstand. A shelf Z serves to hold working tools. A glass window X may be provided in the compartment F for purpose of inspection. j
When several such washstands are located in one room, each is a separate unit and fire in one is immediately extinguished without danger of communication to any other.
I claimpartment above said washstand with a fold- 5 ing bottom, levers for normally holding said bottom in closed position, an easily ignitible material for normally holding said levers, a screen, a weight for closing said screen and a catch normally holding said screen in open 10 position against the action of said weight,
the said levers being arranged to release said catch and said weight when said ignitible material burns; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
