Description

ICE TYPE WATER COOLER WITH GASKET INSULATED TOP Filed Jan. 22, 1949 Patented Nov. 21, 1950 ICE TYPE WATER COOLER WITH GASKET IN SULATED TOP Frank G. Kovacs, Caldwell, and Frederic Arnault Seidler, South Orange, N. J.
Application January 22, 1949, Serial No. 72,127
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in water coolers, and particularly to those ,water coolers provided with ice chambers.
- It is customary to construct an ice type water cooler with an exterior metal shell and an interior metal receptacle for the ice. Insulation material is mounted between these parts. A sheet metal top wall is mounted upon the top of the shell and extends over and connects with the top of the receptacle. It is customary to weld and solder the adjacent portions of the metal receptacle and the metal top wall together. This construction is objectionable, particularly on hot and humid days. It will be found that the cold from the metal receptacle will be conducted directly to the metal top and then part way down the metal shell. Consequently, sweating of the top portion of the exterior metal shell takes place. This invention particularly proposes a simple construction for separating the top Wall from the metal receptacle so as to prevent heat conduction between these parts in order to eliminated the objectionable sweating referred to.
The invention particularly proposes the provision of a heat insulation gasket for separating the adjacent portions of the metal receptacle and the top wall. It is proposed to mount the heat insulation gasket in position in a certain way, and to inter-engage the edge portions of the metal receptacle and top wall so as to hold struction of a device as described which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of an ice type water cooler constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1 but illustrated with the water bottle and the top cover of the cooler removed.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed view of a. portion of Fig. 3.
1 Claim. (Cl. 220-15) CFI The ice type water cooler to which this invention applies has an exterior metal shell III, a metal receptacle II within said shell Il! forming a chamber I2 for the ice, and a sheet metal top Wall I3 mounted upon the top of the shell IIJ and extending over the top edge of the receptacle II. The usual water reservoir I4 is mounted Within the receptacle Il and projects above its top edge and is provided with the usual rubber ring I5 upon which the inverted bottle of water I6 is rested. The water cooler is also provided with a sectional top cover I1 which may be removed to give access to the ice chamber I2 so that the latter may be packed with ice. The cooler is also provided with the usual water drain I8, Water discharge faucet I9, and water discharge shelf Z upon which a glass or cup may be rested beneath the faucet I9,
Insulation material 2| is mounted across the bottom of the receptacle II. The space between the receptacle II and the exterior metal shell III is packed with insulation material 22. Further details of the Water cooler itself will not be given in this application as they have no bearing on the invention.
The inventive feature embodied herein comprises a heat insulation gasket 25 engaging between the adjacent edge portions of said top Wall I3 and said receptacle II. ISaid adjacent edge portions are clamped upon said gasket 25 and are opposed to each other in a certain way in order to secure said top wall I3 and receptacle II together in a position separated by the gasket 25. More particularly, the top edge portion of the receptacle II is formed with an inturned flange 26. The gasket 25 is engaged over the flange 26 and slightly down from said flange. The inner edge portion of the top wall I 3 is formed with a crimped section 21 engaging beneath the flange 26 so as to be opposed to the flange 26 for holding the parts together and at the same time clamping the gasket 25 in position while the gasket acts to separate metal contact of the receptacle I I and the top wall I3.
The operation of the device may be understood from the following:
The ice type water cooler is' used in the usual Way. The ice chamber I2 is packed with ice. The gasket 25 acts to prevent conduction of heat between the ice cooler receptacle II and the top wall I3 and the top portion of the metal shell IIJ. Consequently, on hot and humid days the top portion of the metal shell ID will not sweat. In prior constructions the top wall corresponding with the wall I3, and the top portion of the ice receptacle were welded and soldered together. Consequently, there was good heat conduction between these parts and the top portion of the shell l0 would become excessively cool and sweat, which is highly objectionable.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not lifrlit ourselves to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved. to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as deiined in the appended claim. g
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letrs Patent is:
In an ice type water cooler, an exterior metal shell having a vertical top edge portion, a metal receptacle for ice mounted in said shell and having an inturned top ange positioned below said top edge portion of said shell, a gasket mounted upon the top vportion of said receptacle landengaging around said inturned top flange, a sheet metal top wall having an outer edge portion clamped upon said vertical top edge portion of REFERENCES CTD The following references are of record in the le of this patent:
