Description
Nov. 21, 1950 H. LE R. SMITH 2,530,791
PAINTERS SCAFFOLD HANGER Filed Feb. 17, 1945 Zmnentor Patented Nov. 21, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAINTERS SCAFFOLD HANGER Howard Le Roy Smith, Rochester, N. Y.
Application February 17, 1945, Serial No. 578,368
It is common practice for painters to work on the outside of the wall and the windows of a building.
It is common practice in such cases for painters to be supported on a scaffold that is hung from supports placed higher up on the building.
Buildings are frequently equipped with outside fire escapes, the floors of which are made up of parallel bars of iron suitably spaced apart with openings placed between them.
The object of this invention is to utilize the floors of such fire escapes for the purpose of supporting the scaffold from which the painter must work.
Another object of the invention is to furnish a plate of special design with a hole in the middle thereof, which plate will rest on two or more bars of the floor of the fire escape, and which can be turned on such floor.
Another object of the invention is to thread the hole in such plate with a female thread so that it will act as a nut when it is turned.
Another object of the invention is to shape the plate so that it is especially thick or high around the hole. In other words, that part of the plate is made volcano shaped.
Another object of the invention is to provide said plate with a handle by which it may be easily turned.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger having a threaded rod or stem on the upper end thereof, which can be inserted between two bars in the floor of the fire escape and engaged with the threaded hole in the plate by which the hanger will be supported.
Another object of the invention is to provide the hanger with a stirrup or triangular shaped extension at the bottom thereof on the horizontal member of which a plank can be rested so that it will be supported thereby.
Another object of the invention is to provide the horizontal member with two upwardly projecting points or pins which will engage in the bottom of the plank and will prevent the plank from skidding or slipping in the hanger if one i end of the plank is held higher than the other end.
These and other objects of the invention will be illustrated in the drawings, described in the specification and pointed out in the claim at the end thereof.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the plate which is placed on the floor of the fire escape.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the hanger that 1 Claim. (01. 248-317) can be engaged with the plate for the purpose of supporting the plank.
In the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts.
In the drawings reference numeral l indicates the plate that is placed on the floor of the fire escape. This plate is preferably rectangular in shape and is beveled on the ends thereof as indicated at 2 and 3 so that it will engage two or more bars of the floor of the fire escape and so that it can be turned on the fioor of the fire escape without catching on or being obstructed by any of the bars on which it may rest or by which it may be engaged. 4 indicates the handle by which the plate may be turned so that a wrench need not be applied thereto.
This plate is bulged up in the center volcano shape so as to give an extra thickness to the plate at the central part thereof. This part of the plate is perforated with a hole 6 which is threaded with a female thread, which can be engaged by the stem of the hanger.
The hanger is shown in Figure 2 and consists of a single bar or rod 1 threaded at its upper end with a male thread 8. This rod is bent on itself at the bottom so as to form a triangular shaped stirrup having the inclined sides 9 and [B on the opposite sides thereof and having a horizontal bottom I I supported therefrom all formed preferably in one piece. The side It is positively fastened to the side 9 as indicated at l2 by brazing or welding or in any other suitable manner.
The bottom of the stirrup is formed with shoulders I3 and I4 between which the plank is positively held so that it cannot move sideways, and on the bottom member I l is formed upwardly projecting pins l5 and It on which the plank rests and by which the plank is prevented from slipping endwise.
The hanger is put in place by first placing the part shown in Figure 1 on the fioor of the fire escape. The rod 1 can be inserted up through the floor and engaged with the threaded hole 6 in the plate I. The plate I or the hanger can be turned several times until the threaded end 3 is suitably engaged with the hole 6. The hanger then is brought to the correct position and the plank is inserted in the stirrup and the end of the plank will be thereby supported.
The other end of the plank can be supported in a similar manner or in any other well-known manner as may be desired.
I claim:
A hanger for a painters scaffold comprising an upright bar threaded at the upper end thereof,
a triangular shaped stirrup at the lower end of the bar, said stirrup having two equally inclined side members and a horizontal bottom member said inclined sides being bent inwardly and downwardly before connecting with the bottom member and forming shoulders on each side of the bottom member, upwardly projecting pins on said horizontal bottom member, a plate having a threaded openingtherein withwhich the threaded. end of'the .bar engages and from which it is supported, the top of the plate being made volcano shaped around the threaded opening to.
increase the threaded engagement between the plate and the bar. and a handle onthe-plate by which the plate is turned.
