Description

FZZ7//M NPETEPS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHEE. WASHINGTON u C STATE @ATE T FBICE.
FRANK G. BROWN, OB PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYL"ANIA, ASSIGNOR T WILLIAM BROWN, OF SAME PLAGE.
TURNOUT FOR RAILWAYS.
Specification of Letters Patent N0. 25,299, dated August 30, 18 591 T0 all whom z't mag; concem:
Be it known tl1at- I, FRANK C. BROVN, of
' fl1e cit1 0f Philadelphia, in ehe county 0f Philadelphia, in tl1e Stute 0f Pennsylvania, have invented a 110W and useful Mode of Altering tl1e Course of Bailway-Cars a1; Turnouts Vithout tl1e Employment 0f MOV- able Switches and Switcl1-Tenders; and I d0 l1ereby declare tl1at the following is a full, 010211, and exact description of tl1e sa1ne, reference being had to the accompany- 111g drawing and (o the letters 0f reference marked thereon.
The nature of 111y invention consists in constructing the 0211 wheels with an additional flange 01' flanges 0n tl1eir circumference thus forming a gr00ve 01 grooves 011 the face 0f the wheels und in adding at the san1e tin1e sl10rt curved bare t0 the track 0f the roacl at turn0uts t0- enter int0 the grooves and thus change the course of cars while in m0ti0n at the turnouts, at tl1e san1e time allowing cars with wheels 0f the ordinary construction t0 pass over the track at tl1e turnouts without being deflected fr0m their course, thus dispensing with movable switches 111d switch tenders and insuring certainty and economy, uniformity and despatch in the motion 0f tl1e cars at turnoucs.
In O1Cl8l t0 enable 0thers to make and use my invention I will desc1ibe the 11121111101 111 which I carry it i11t0 efl'ect. O11 reference t0 tl1e acco1npanying drawing which f01111s a pa1t 0f this specification Figu1e l, represents 21 section 0f rail r0ad embracing a turnout. Fig. 2 represents 'CWO rail road car wheels 0f which the 0110 marked C, is the ordinary Wheel and that marked B, is the improved wheel. Fig. 3, represents vertical sections 0f the two wheels in Fig. 2 of which C, is a secti0n 0f the ordinary car wheel and B, is a section 0f tl1e improved wheel.
011 reference to Fig. l,a, a, represents t-he curved bar Which receives tl1e groove 0f the improved wheel which is represented in Fig. 2, B, by tl1e letters g, g, and gives the carthe direction 0f the bar while at the same ti1ne it allows cars with the ordinary wheels 130 pass 011 in 21 direct line.
In Fig. 2, B, which represents tl1e improved wheel, g, g, is the groo-ve which is for1ned by the additional flange and which takes hold 0f the curved bar a, a, in F ig. l, and changes tl1e course of the am. Letter C, 0f Fig. 2, is tl1e ordinary car wheel.
In Fig. 8, Which is a vertical seetion of tl1e wheels in Fig. 2, the improved vvheel B, is represented as being hollowed 011t 011 tl1e inside t0 diminish its weight,g, g, 011 the wheel represents the groove f0rn1ed by the additional flange as in Fig. 2 g, g, and C is a section 0f the ordinary car wheel.
T110 improved wheel above described may be applied t0 0110 or both sides 0f tl1e car according t0 tl1e mute it is intended t0 travel and the curved bars may be placed ab vari- 011s turnouts 011 the san1e line 0f 1'021d 0n eitl1er side in such a manner as t0 cause the cars 1111111i11g 0Ve1 a 1oad With many turnouts und branches 130 take the desired course.
This efl'ect and advantage rnay be still fur-- ther secured and obtained by placing more (hau 011e curved bar alt each turnout and making the bars of diflerent widths so 21s t0 adapt t-l1e1n 130 operate 011 the improved Wheels with grooves 0f certain widths and 110t- 011 such Wheels with grooves 0'f othe1 widths 01 by placi11g the eurved bars in such positi0ns as 130 operate 011 the grooves co11strucf@d and intended t0 receive tl1em 1111d n0t 0n others.
\Vl1at I claim as rny invention 21nd desire to secu1e by Letters Patent is The adcliti0n 0f grooves 011 the circumference 0f car Wheels as 110W constructed with a single flange and tread und the placing of cnrved ba1s at turnougs 011 the track 0f the 1'011d t0 ente1 and operate 011 such grooves l'01 l'he purpose 0f changing the direction of ca1s substantially as and f01' tl1e purpose herein set forth.
F. C. BROVVN.
