Description

O. M. STRANDBERG METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING HANDLES FOR CARRYING BAGS AND THE LIKE Filed Aug. 20, 1946 Nov. 14, 1950 ab a ab c 5 Patented Nov. 14, 1950 METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING HANDLS FOR CARRYING BAGS AND THE LIKE Oscar Mauritz Strandberg, Enskede, Sweden Application August 20, 1946, Serial No. 691,752 In Sweden August 24, 1945 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing handles for carrying bags and particularly for paper bags.
Handles manufactured in such a way have generally had the disadvantage that they are easily broken. They easily cut into the hands and easily become loose from the bag to which they are attached. All these disadvantages are eliminated by the handle according to the invention which is substantially characterized by the fact that one or more paperstrips (strips of fabric or the like), are folded parallel or substantially parallel with both edges a suitable number of times, after which the folded parts thus obtained are folded against each other and the strip, which all over has the same cross-sectional area without recesses, is cut off in lengths suitable for the handle, after which the end parts of the handles are slit open, after bending into U-shape, in such a way, that each handle-leg can be attached to a bag with a flap on each side thereof. According to the invention a cross piece, the length of which is equal or substantially equal to the leg distance, may be arranged in the central part of the handle, between the folded parts. In order to strengthen the connection between `the handle and the bag a strengthening strip of paper or the like may be attached to the flaps, the said strip being attached to the upper part of the bag when the handle is being fastened.
An embodiment of a handle according to the invention is illustrated on the accompanying drawing. Fig. 1 is-a front view of the handle and Fig. 2 is a section on the line II in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a paperstrip.
The reference numeral 2 designates a paper bag to which the handle 3 is attached. The handle is manufactured from a paper strip 4, which is folded a number of times on lines af-a, b-b and c-c, which are parallel with the edges of the strip.
The handle is manufactured in the following manner: The paper strip is coated with a suitable paste and folded along the lines b-b with the outer edges facing to the middle line ca -a. The obtained double parts are coated with paste and are then folded along the lines c-c with the outer edges against the middle line a-a, and the parts thus obtained are finally folded against each other along the middle line and are then coated with paste. The strip thus obtained is then cut off in lengths suitable for the handle and is slit open a little at the ends at 5, so that two flaps 6 are obtained, which are intended to be glued on to each side of the paper bag. As is clear from Fig. 1, each handle is folded in three parts, so that a cross piece 6a is obtained, from which the posts project at right angles, the said 2 posts being attached to the bag. In order to increase the adherence of the handles to the bag and the strength of the bag a strip I of paper or the like may be attached to the flaps 6. In the cross piece a cross piece 8 of suitable material, for instance Wood, is arranged.
The invention is not restricted to the shown embodiment but there may be various combinations within the scope of the invention. The paper strip may be folded in any desired way and, if desired, the slitting may be effected by a machine. The cross piece may be omitted as well as the glueing of the strips before the folding. A rolled paper strip may also be used. If the strips are slitted in a machine this should suitably be done before the folding and before the cutting-off of the strips.
Having now described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
1. A method for manufacturing handles for bags comprising folding at least one strip of suitable material a suitable number of times from both longitudinal edges towards the middle of the strip, equally broad parts being folded in from each side, folding the folded parts thus obtained against each other, cutting off the strip, which all over has the same cross sectional area without recesses, in lengths suitable for the handle, slitting the end parts open between the folded parts of the strip, bending the strip into U-shape, after which the flaps thus obtained are attached to the respective bag sides, the intermediate portion thereof serving as a grip for the hand.
2. A method according to claim 1, including coating the strips before folding with a paste so that the parts folded against each other adhere to each other, and inserting a cross-piece of suitable material from below in the said intermediate portion of the strip before the folded parts of the strip are folded against each other.
3. A method according to claim 1, including attaching a strengthening strip to the flaps, the said` strip being attached to the upper part of the bag when the handle is being fastened.
