T. BOWEN MOUNTING FOR FLEXIBLE CAPSULES FOR v OPERATING TRANSMISSIONS Filed July 17. 1947 'INIIQNTOR Patented Nov. 14, 1950 MOUNTING FOR FLEXIBLE CAPSULES FOR OPERATING TRANSMISSIONS Tom Bowen, Brighton, England, a'ssignor to Pullars Instruments Limited (formerly Pullars Electric Co.
(Brighton)v Limited), Brighton,
England, a British company Application July, 1947, Serial No. 761, 726 In Great Britain December 6, 1945 Section 1, Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 Patent expires December 6, 1965 4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to mountings for flexible capsules for operating transmissions, and is particularly concerned with pressure indicators, such as aneroid barometers.
According to this invention, a mounting for a flexible capsule for operating a transmission is characterised in that the transmission is fixed relatively to the main frame against movement as a whole in the direction of the deflection of the capsule, and in that the capsule is mounted on a part which is adjustable relatively to the main frame in said direction of deflection.
In one construction according to this invention, the part on which the capsule is mounted is resilient and is fixed to or formed integrally with said main frame, and adjusting means are provided for deflecting said resilient part.
For example, the main frame may comprise a metal plate and the resilient part may comprise a tongue which is punched out of the metal of the plate so as to be secured thereto at one end, while an adjusting screw secured to said plate is arranged to engage the free end of said tongue.
The aforesaid set-screw may be carried by a bridge piece which is arranged to extend across the slot formed in the plate by the punching out of said tongue.
The aforesaid bridge piece may be provided by two lugs, each of which is punched out of the metal of said plate flanking the aforesaid slot, 1
and bent back upon the plate so that the ends of the lugs abut one another, or are closely adjacent one another.
In order to provide a hole which may be tapped to receive said set-screw, the aforesaid lugs are so punched out of the material that their ends are provided with a semi-circular recess, which recesses when arranged opposite one another provide the aforesaid hole. The end of the adjusting screw may be located in a recess formed at or near the end of said tongue.
The following is a description of the invention as applied to a barometer movement, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the barometer movement, and
Figure 2 is an underplan view of Figure 1.
The main frame carrying the barometer movement comprises a base plate In formed from mild steel or other comparatively resilient material, and to which is secured three pillars l I to which is secured a bridge plate I 2. The bridge plate in its turn is provided with three pillars [3 on which is mounted an outer plate M. The bridge 2 plate I2 has secured to it two posts l5 between which is pivotally mounted a rockshaft IS, the posts being provided with the usual adjustable pivot bearings H. The rockshaft is provided with a lever-arm [8 which overlies a projection l9 on a barometer capsule 20. The barometric capsule is adjustably mounted in relation to the base plate I!) in the following manner. A tongue-2| of a shape shown in Figure 2 is punched out of the metal of the base plate so as to be secured thereto at one end 22 thereof; while the other end is engaged by a set-screw 23 having a countersunk head located in a hole in said other end of the tongue and the screw-threaded stem of which engages a part of the base plate hereinafter described. The underside of the barometric capsule 20 is provided with a threaded stem 30 which passes through a hole in the tongue 2| and is engaged by a clamping nut 24. Two lugs 25 are punched out of the metal of the base plate and are bent back upon one another so that their extremities lie close to one another and bridge the slot 26 from which the aforesaid tongue 2| has been cut. The punching operation of the aforesaid lugs is such as to provide a recess in each end thereof forming a hole which is screw-threaded to receive the set-screw 23. The gaps 21 left in the base plate are thus formed at one end thereof with small projections 28 resulting from the stamping out of the recesses which receive the set-screw. The base plate is also provided with holes 29 for attachment to a support.
The tongue 2| is initially bent sufliciently to locate the barometric capsule at one required limit of its adjustable movement. Thus, by rotating the set-screw 23 by means of a slot in the end thereof, the tongue may be drawn towards the base plate while rotation of the set-screw in the opposite direction permits the tongue to return automatically under the resilient action thereof.
I claim:
1. An instrument responsive to changes of pressure comprising a metal mounting plate, a resilient tongue punched out of said plate so as to be secured thereto at one end, a set screw engaging a threaded hole in said plate and engaging said tongue so as to adjust its flexure, a capsule mounted on said tongue and having at least one flexible wall adapted to be subjected to varying pressure, a mechanical transmission mounted on said plate and having a part connected to said capsule.
2. An instrument responsive to change of prestongue and having at least one flexible wall adapted to be subjected to varying pressure, a mechanical transmission mounted on said plate and having a part connected to said capsule.
3. An instrument responsive to change of pressure comprising a metal mounting plate, a resilient tongue punched out of said plate so as to be secured thereto at one end and leaving a slot in said plate, a bridge piece extending across said slot and attached to said plate which bridge piece comprises two lugs punched out of the metal of the plate on either side of said slot and bent back on the plate so that their ends approach one another, a set screw engaging a threaded hole formed between said ends and engaging said tongue, a, capsule mounted on said tongue and having at least one flexible wall adapted to be subjected to varying pressure, a mechanical transmission mounted on said plate and having a partconnected to said capsule.
4. An instrument responsive to change of pressure comprising a metal mounting plate, a resilient tongue punched out of said plate so as to be secured thereto at one end and leaving a slot 4 in said plate, a bridge piece extending across said slot and attached to said plate which bridge piece comprises two lugs punched out of the metal of the plate on either side of said slot so as to be attached to the plate at one end and each to have V a half circular slot at the other which lugs are bent back on the plate so that their ends abut With the half circular holes in register, a set screw engaging threads on the resulting hole and engaging said tongue, a capsule mounted on said tongue and having at least one flexible wall adapted to be subjected to varying pressure, a mechanical transmission mounted on said plate and having a part connected to said capsule.
