COMBINATION DETACHABLE HANDLE AND CAN PUNCH Filed March 25, 1949 3 lg. I:
JNVENTORS Eon n20 M 04/1 52 Patented Nov. 14, 1950 COMBINATION DETACHABLE HANDLE AND CAN PUNCH Edward M. Oliver and Benjamin F. Malherbe, Denver, 0010.
Application March 25, 1949, Serial N 0. 83,462
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a handle for tin cans, and more particularly to a combined opener and handle for use on beer cans.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, convenient handle which can be quickly and easily attached to or released from a beer can for forming a drinking mug therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the improved handle that it can also be used as a can opener for opening the top of the can for drinking purposes.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efiiciency. These will become more apparent from the f ollowing description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved combination beer can opener and handle, illustrating it in place on a can ready for use;
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, illustrating the handle in the partially applied position; and
Fig. 3 is a similar view, illustrating the handle in the fully applied position.
In the drawing, a conventional can of the beer type is indicated at it. Such cans are provided with an inset top, such indicated at ll, and an inset bottom, both of which are provided with peripheral, projecting flange beads 12.
The improved combination can opener and handle comprises an elongated hand grip portion l3 extending forwardly at its top to form a can opener portion [4. The opener portion I4 consists of a sharp-edged, downwardly curved, triangular cutting oint l5 and a bead fang [6. The bead fang l 6 is stamped from the metal of the portion H! and extends downwardly and forwardly therefrom to form a hook which engages under the upper flange bead l2, as shown in Fig. 2.
The can is opened by hooking the fang [6 under the upper bead l2, then prying upwardly on the handle I3. This causes the cutting fang [5 to pierce the can top [0 and cut a triangular flap therefrom which is bent downwardly on the inside of the can to form triangular pouring openings il in the top thereof.
A flap l8 is hingedly mounted on the lower extremity of the handle portion l3 so as to extend forwardly therefrom. The free extremity of the flap I8 is widened and curved to form a curvated foot portion [9.
To attach the handle to the can, the hook I6 is engaged beneath the upper flange bead l2, with the flap l8 resting against the can, as shown in Fig. 2. The flap E8 is now forced downwardly to a position against the lower can bead I2. In moving downwardly, it will flex the handle l3 outwardly to the position of Fig. 3, thereby forming a convenient serving handle for the can in the nature of a drinking mug.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A handle for cans of the type having upper and lower peripheral beads, comprising: a handle portion; an upper can-engaging portion formed on and extending forwardly of said handle and adapted to extend over the top of a can; hooked means on said latter portion adapted to engage beneath the upper bead of the can; and a flap hinged to the lower extremity of said handle portion and adapted to be swung downwardly against the can to force the lower extremity of the handle portion outwardly to cause said hooked means to grip said bead.
2. A handle for cans of the type having upper and lower peripheral beads, comprising: a handle portion; a can-engaging portion extending forwardly from said handle portion; a lower hook formed on said can-engaging portion adapted to engage beneath the upper peripheral bead; an upper hook on said can-engaging portion adapted to engage the top of said bead; and a fiap hinged on the lower extremity of said handle portion and adapted to swing downwardly against said can and against the lower flange bead thereof to force said handle portion outwardly so as to pry said upper hook downwardly on said upper peripheral bead.
3. A combined can opener and can handle comprising: a pointed fang adapted to extend over the top of the can; a hook formed on said fang adapted to engage the bottom of the upper flange of the can; a handle portion formed on said fang which, when swung upwardly, will swing said fang downwardly into cutting engagement with the top of said can; and a flap hinged on the lower extremity of said handle portion and adapted to swing into engagement with the side of said Can. a
