D. W. WILLIAMS GONSTRUGTING CHANNELS THROUGH SAND BARS IN HARBORS. No. 252,917.- Patented Jan. 31,1882.
- NITED STATES TENT amen,
DANIEL V. WILLIAMS, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CONSTRUCTING CHANNELS THROUGH'SAND BARS IN HARBORS.
SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 252,917, dated January 31, 1882.
I Application filed October 18, 1881. No model.) i
in Harbors, Rivers, Bays, 850.; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part II1l60f,1H whicha Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan ofa harborprovidedtherewith.
, Fig. 3 is a view of one form of the piles which I employ.
The nature of my invention consists of the insertion of piles orplanks upon sand bars in harbors, rivers, bays, &c., along and across the place through which it is desired to construct a channel in such a manner that the action of the water upon and aroundsuch piles or planks will wash away and remove the sand of which such bars are composed, and thus form a channel through the same.
To enable others to use my invention, I will proceed to describem y method of constructing a channel through sand bars in harbors, &c.
I use a boat or scow, as shown in Fig. 1, having holes or apertures through the deck and hull thereof, through which anumber ofplan ks or piles, A A A, are inserted vertically in such a manner that they may be raised and lowered by means of a windlass, B, or blocks and falls,
or other device, so that such planks or piles may rest upon and sink into sand bars 0 when placed thereon along and across theplace upon such bars through which it is desired to construct a channel in such a manner that the action of the water upon and around such planks or piles will remove and wash away the sand of which such bars are composed, and thus by removing such sand form a channel through said bars. I also use such planks or piles without a boat or scow by sinking them into the sand on such bars along and across the place where it is desired to construct a channel, as shown and designated by the letters-A A A in Fig. 2, and also marked to designate the position of the planks or piles when used without a boat or scow.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A method ofconstructing channels through sand bars'in harbors, rivers, bays, &c., by the insertion ofplauks or piles into such bars along and across the place through which it is desired to'construct a channel in such a manner that the action of the water upon and around such planks or piles will remove and wash away the sand of which such bars are composed, and thus form a channel through the same.
