Description

, (No Model.)
P MQGUIPE I PIN AND LINK CARRYING DEVIOE FOR RAILWAY GARS.
Patented Jan. 31,1882.
NTTED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
PATRICK MCGUIRE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
PIN AND LINK CARRYING DEVICE FOR RAILWAY- CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,890, dated January 31, 1882.
Application filed November 22, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK MCGUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Carrying Coupling Links and Pins for Railroad-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven-' tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forms partof this specification.
My invention relates toa device to be applied to railroad-cars for the purpose of carrying coupling pins and links; and the object of my improvement is to provide a device which may be attached to any convenient part of a railroad-car and be capable of carrying the links and pins for coupling the cars. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the figure there shown illustrating my device. 7
It is well known thatin running heavytrains upon railroads thecoupling pins and links are trcquently broken, and especially is this the case in starting such trains; and it is equally well known that unless extralinksand pins are at hand considerable time is lost in procuring them. My invention is designed to provide the. means of having these things always in a convenh nt position,so thatin the eventof one being broken the brakeman or other person whose duty it is to recouple the train can always find the means for doingit by stepping to the place where the break occurred. This object is attained by providing a plate of I (N0 model.)
desired dimensions, it having upon its outer face projections B B, or a flange, with apertures in them or it for the reception of coupling-pins C C. Between the projections B B, or in any convenient location, there is placed a'hook or hooks, D, which are so formed as to admit of there being placed upon them one or more coupling-links, E, as shown in the drawing.
This device may be attached to the end or ends of a car, or to any other part thereof where itwill be convenientof access, the effect of which will be to cause a supply oflinks and pins to be convenient in thceventot'the breaking of any one in use, thus enabling the train to proceed without delay.
It is apparent that the form of the device may be changed to a considerableextent without departing from my inventionas, for instance, the projection for receiving the pins may extend entirely across the plate, and thus constitute a flange having a slot in it, into which a number of pins may be placed; or it may have ears formed upon its ends and rods 'ot'irou passed through'said ears, thus forming a slot for the reception of pins.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A plate of metal the outer surface of which is provided with projections adapted to receive and carry coupling links and pins for coupling together railroad-cars, it being used in connection with such cars in anyconvenient locality, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK MGGUIRE.
