The primary object f the invention is to provide amachine of the above character adapted to be advanced on the surface to be striped endopera ted .to feedstripingfiuid to the surface-in such fashion as to define -.a linev while the machine :is
advancing and in which means are provided to ;prevent discharge .of the striping fluid when the machine isat rest.

With the foregoing objects in view together .with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the invention resides in the :parts and in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described-and claimed, andillustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in whichz Fig.1 is a view of the striping machine as-seen in sideelevation-with part of the-handle portion thereofbroken away and showing'certain adjustable parts thereof in alternate position in full and dotted lines:

Referring to the drawings more specifically A indicates generally a carriage which embodiesa bed plate I 5 fitted at its forward end withan axle I6 on which is revolubly mounted a pair of wheels I'II'I. A pair of parallel rocker arms i8.l8 pivotally supported on pivot pins l9l9- carried on the rear side portions of the bed plate I5 extend longitudinally along each side of the bed plate and to the rear thereof and have wheels 28 2!! revolubly mounted on the rear ends thereof. The wheels I'IIl and 20-20 align with each other and constitutethe running gear of the carriage A. Extending transversely beneath the bed plate I5 and carried thereby is a rock shaft 2!! fitted at each side of the bed plate with finger cams 22--22 which engage the lower edges of the for-. ward end portions of the rocker arms 18-18. The rock shaft M is fitted with an operating lever 23 which extends upwardly at one side of the bed plate I5 and whereby the rock shaft 2! may be turned to cause the finger cams 22-22 to move upwardly and effect elevation of the forward ends of the rocker arms I 8l8 and thereby elevate the rear marginal portion of the bed plate I5 with the latter swinging on the front axle It as on a fulcrum, or to cause the finger cams to .move downwardly to permit downward movement of the rocker arms I8I8 and the rear portion of the bed plate I 5 under the weight of the latter and of the load imposed thereon.
Formed on the underside of the rear portionof the bed plate I5 is a tube 24 which extends along thelongitudinal center of the bed frame signed to receive in telescopicengagement therewith the tubular end 2'! of a nozzle 'B Whichend 3 is cylindrical and conformable to the inner periphery of the outer end 26 of the tube 24. A flange 28 is formed on the cylindrical end 21 of the nozzle and is adapted to abut the end 26 of the tube 24 against which the flange 28 is tightly but releasably held by a, bale 29 pivoted at its ends 36-40 in sockets 3|3I on the body:
through the cylindrical end of the nozzle and also opening through a slot in the outer end of the nozzle which end is elongated transversely -and embodies a bottom wall 36, a top wall 31 and end walls 3838.
The nozzle top wall 31 extends in angular relation to the bottom wall 36 and has its outer edge 39 inwardly offset relative to the outer edge. 40 of the bottom wall 36. Ledges 4|4| are formed on the inner faces of the end walls 3838 extending in continuation of the upper face of the top wall 31, and seating on the ledges 4|-4| and the upper face of the'wall 31 is a removable flexible metallic plate 42 the forward edge 43 of which extends parallel with the forward edge 46 of the nozzle bottom wall 36 and is spaced inwardly therefrom forming a gap 44 between the edges 40 and 43 which gap constitutes the discharge outlet of the nozzle B. Seating on the plate 42 is an elastic sheet 45 formed .of rubber or similar material which projects over the nozzle outlet 44 and has its forward marginal portion projecting beyond the nozzle edge 40 and is adapted to be seated on the latter to close. the nozzle outlet 44 or to be spaced relative to the edge 40 to open said outlet. The outer edge 46 of the flexible sheet 45 extends parallel with the edge 46 which edges together with the edge 43 of the plate 42 are straight and coextensive throughout the width of the nozzle outlet 44. Seated on the upper face of the flexible sheet -'45 is a thin flexible metallic plate the forward edge 43 of which is spaced inwardly from the forward edge 46 of the flexible sheet 45.-
The assembly consisting of the plate 42, sheet seats on the plate 41 and is engaged by the studs 49; the bar 56 being held in place by a bale 5| the ends 52.52 of which are pivoted in sockets in the outer faces of the'nozzle end walls 3838; the intermediate portion of the bale 5| havin snap clamping engagement with a notch 53 formed on a contoured lug 54 formed on and projecting upwardly from the central portion of the clamping bar 50. Formed on the bar 56 and projecting forwardly of its forward edge and at each end thereof are extensions 5555 arranged to bear upon the end margins of the elastic sheet 45' at the ends of the plate 41 which are inset to clear the extensions 55 as particularly shown in Fig. 8 so as to hold the ends of the plate 42 and the mid portion of the ends of sheet 45' against displacement of the ledges 4|.
The outer edge of the flexible sheet 45 constitutes an applicator for applying and spreading striping fluid discharged from the nozzle and to form a stripe of such fluid while the nozzle is being advanced as will hereinafter be more fully described; the under side of the outer marginal portion of the flexible sheet 45 being formed with a. series of short grooves 56, particularly shown in Fig. 9, which grooves lead from the inner portion of that part of the sheet 45 protruding beyond the nozzle end edge 40 and opening to the outer end of the sheet. The grooves 56 serve to uniformly feed and distribute the striping fluid passing therebeneath with a brushing action.
Means are provided for automatically clamping the forward marginal portion of the sheet 45 against the edge 40 to close the outlet 44 which as here shown comprises a rocker bar 51 extending transversely of the under side of the 'nozzle body and pivotally connected at its end portion to the latter by pivot pins 58-58 and which rocker bar is formed at its ends with parallel shoes 59-59 extending alongside the end walls 38 of the nozzle and protruding rearwardly thereof; the shoes being formed with upstanding lugs 6660 affording a support for the end portionsof aremovable rod 6| extending over' and abutting the forward marginal portion of the plate 41. One end portion of'the rod BI is formed with an angular extension 62 overlyingone of the shoes 59 and having spring engagement with a lug 63 on the latter whereby the rod 6| is re leasably heldjin place. Springs 6464 bear between the under side of the nozzle bottom wall 36 and a forward marginal portion of the bar51 forwardlyof the pivots 5858 at each end portion of the bar 51, which springs normally press the shoes 5959 downwardly to cause the bar 6| to bear on and bend the outer marginal portions of the plate 41 and sheet 45 downwardly to bring the under side of the sheet 45 tightly against the edge 40 as shown in Fig. 6, when the shoes are clear of the surface on which the machine is'supported. The shoes 59 are adapted to be swung upwardly relative to the nozzle B on being brought into engagement with the surface on which the machine is supported so that the outer margin of the flexible sheet 45 will be bent upwardly as shown in Fig. 7 to clear the edge 40 when the outer margin of the sheet 45 is brought to bear under pressure on such surface.
The bed plate I5 is adapted to receive and afford a support for a container C of striping fluid, which container is here shown as comprising an ordinary paint bucket the bottom wall 65 ofwhich is seated in a recess 66 on the bed plate l5 and is formed with an opening 61 arranged over the opening 25 of the tube 24 through which contents of the container C are delivered through the tube 24 to the nozzle B and its associated applicator. The container C is rigidly held in place on the bed plate I5 by clamp bars 68 having inturned flanges 69 on their upper ends positioned in engagement with the upper margin of the container and having out-turned flanges 10 on their lower ends secured by screws 1| to the bed plate l5. The container C is fitted with a removable cover 12 having an upstanding central post 13 formed with a notch 14 in its upper end to receive a bale 15 with which the container C is equipped and whereby the cover 12 is held in place.

As a means for cushioning relative movement of the rocker armsl8-i8 and the bed plate 55 each of the rocker arms is equipped with a yoke 86 one leg of which is aifixed to the rocker arm and the other of which carries a protruding downwardly extending coil spring 81 the lower end of which is disposed to abut the bed plate to cushion and limit downward movement of the forward end portions of the rocker arms relative to bed plate.
Mounted on the axle It for a vertical swinghi'g movement is an arm E here shown as comprising spaced side members 88-83 between the outer ends of which is mounted a revol-uble wheel 89. The arm E normally extends forwardly of the carriage A with the wheel 89 bearing on the surface supporting the carriage at a point in advance of the latter in line with its longitudinal center and that of the nozzle and applicator to serve as a guide to the operator in directing the carriage along a line. When not in use the arm E may be swung upwardly into the dotted line position shown in Fig. l Where a transverse rod 9i! extending between the inner portions of the side members 88-438 of the arm is sprung into engagement with a contoured lug 9! projecting from the forward end of the bed plate l5.
A coil spring 92'wound around the axle it has one end thereof engaged with the lug 9i and its other end engaging the lower edge of an extension 93 on one of the arm side members 38. The spring 92 is tensioneol to yieldably hold the arm E in its forwardly extending position; the spring however being sufficiently weak that the engagement of the rod 90 with the lug 9! when the arm E is in its upright position will retain it in such position in opposition to the spring 92. When the arm E is forwardly extended the spring 92 will exert such down pressure on the arm E as to hold the wheel 89 against the supporting surface.
In the operation of the invention when it is desired to move the carriage over a surface without efiecting a striping action the applicator strip 45 is disposed out of contact with the surface on which the carriage is supported which is effected by elevating the rear portion of the bed plate i5 relative to such surface by disposing the finger cam 22 on the rock shaft 2! so as to support the forward ends of the rocker arms l8l8 in their uppermost positions as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to effect a striping action the rock shaft 2i is turned through the medium of the lever 23 to swing the finger cams 22--22 rearwardly and downwardly thereby permitting the forward portions of the rocker arms ill-48 and the rear portions of th bed plate i5 to Swing :zdownwardly ;to bring the outer :margin lot :the gappl'icatorsheet1451and the sh0'es;5.9--.59 intoconta'ctswith the surface ;to be striped and causing the :outer edge dfilof the sheet and the shoes 1.59-i591t0. swing upwardly relative (to the nozzle .underrthe urg .of the load imposed through the latter from :thexbed plate vi5.- The nozzleoutlet x4 8 :will then .be open as shown in Fig. '7.so that ithestriping fluid may flow to discharge through the nozzle and on advance of the carriage A be distributed by the applicator to form a stripe.
.In' order to :facilitate :advancing the carriage along a line the arm E is swung to its lowered forwardly extending position so that the wheel 89 on the outer end thereof will seat on the surface being striped in advance of the carriage and then serve as a guide to the operator who directs movement of the carriage through the medium of the handle D then disposed in its desired angular relation to the bed plate to facilitate shoving of the carriage. When the stripe is formed of desired length the flow of striping fluid may be stopped either by lifting the rear portion of the carriage through the medium of the handle D so as to elevate the shoes 5959 clear of the striped surface or by manipulating the lever 23 to swing the forward ends of the arms [8 upwardly. By lifting the rear portion of the carriage by means of the handle D it may be advanced on its forward wheels l'l-I'| while so elevated to a desired position and again lowered to its stripe forming position, thus obviating the operation of the lever 23 to out off the flow of the striping fluid as when momentarily breaking a stripe or in turning the carriage around! A feature of the invention resides in the construction of the nozzle and applicator whereby the applicator may be readily removed and the parts separated for cleansing purposes, which is accomplished by freeing the clamping bar by mcving the bale out of engagement with the lug 5 1 then lifting the bar and the applicator assembly free of the studs 49. The nozzle B may be detached from the carriage when so desired by disengaging the bale 29 from the forward end of the tube 2 1 and withdrawing the cylindrical end 2! of the nozzle out of engagement with the outer end of the tube 24.
When the striping fluid content of the container C has been drained therefrom the container may be refilled on removing the cover 72 which is quickly effected by disengaging the bail '15 from the post 13 and lifting the cover free of the container.
I claim:
1. In a striping machine, a nozzle having an elongated discharge outlet, a wall forming the margin of the under side of said outlet having a straight forward edge, a wall spaced from said first named wall having a forward margin off-set rearwardly from the margin of the first named wall, a flexible metallic plate seated on said last named wall projecting beyond the forward margin of the latter and having an edge spaced inwardly from the margin of the first named wall and defining with said margin the nozzle discharge outlet, a flexible applicator sheet overlying said plate having a marginal portion protruding beyond the margin of said first named wall, a flexible metallic plate overlying said sheet and means for detachably clamping the assembly of the metallic plate and the flexible sheet on said nozzle.
