W. F. GILBERT.
CORSET CLASP. No. 252,756.v Patented @111.211, 1882.
NTTED STATES PATENT GFFIC.
WILLIAM F. GILBERT, OF BIRMINGHAM, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO ALVIN E. HEWITT, OF SAME PLAGE.
CORSETf-CLAS P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,756, dated January 24, 1882.
Application filed November 14, 1881.
To alt whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. F. GILBERT, ofBirniingharn, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Corset-Olasps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference lnarked thereon, to be a full, clean, and exact description ot' the saine, and which vsaid drawings constitute part ot this specitication, and represent, in
Figure 1, a front view of the two parts of the corset separated one from another; Fig. 2, the two parts as joined; Fig. 3, a transverse central section on line x of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a perspective view; Fig. 5, a perspective view of thel other parts ofthe clasping device; Fig. 6,' the blank as cut from the sheet.
This invention relates to an iinprovcinentin the device for securing the front edge of corsets, particularly to that class in which the steels are provided, the one with a hook and the other with an eye or a substantial equivalent therefor, the invention being' for animproveinent in the hookand-eye part; and it c onsists in the construction, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claini.
The one part, A, as seen in perspective view, is made from sheet metal, one end a bent so as to clasp over the rear edge of the steel b, (see Fig. 3,) the other end extending beyond the front edge of the steel, with a tongue, d, struck downward therefrom to bend backward over the front edge of the steel, as seen in Fig. 3, so that the bent edge a and tongue d serve as a means for securing this part to the steel b. Tbe portion which extends beyond the edge ofthe steel has an opening cut through it, leaving therein the tongue e, projecting toward the steel, to which it is attached. This completes the one part,A. The other or companion part, B, as seen in perspective, Fig. 5, is also made from sheet 1netal,cut as seen in Fig. G, one
(Model.)
end f turned backward and under over the rear edge of the other steel, It, as seen in Fig. 3. The other end is turned upward and then doubled back to form a stop,i, projecting upward, as seen in Fig. 3, the end l continued downward and turned inward so as to engage the front edge ot' that steel, as seen in Fig. 3, 'and clasp that steel in like manner as do the parts a d of the other part, A.
On each side of the part B a tongue, n, projects upward and over to form a loop or eye, r, as seen in Figs. 3 and 5, and into which the tongue e of the other part may enter, as seen in Fig. 3, the best engagement being shown in that gure in broken lines. The relative position of the eye r to the tongue of the othe'r part, the. opening through it, and the stop i is such that when the tongue is fully inserted in the eye i' the opening in the other part will pass down in front of the stop t', as seen in Fig. 3, the said stop extending outward throughl that opening, so as to prevent the disengagement ot' the clasps until the parts be brought into the position seen in broken lines, Fig. 3, which cannot accidentally occur upon the wearer.
I clairn- The herein described clasp for corsets, consisting of the one part, A, constructed with tongues or projections a d, bent down over the respective edges of the steel, and with a tongue, e, in an opening in the portion which extends beyond the edge ot' the steel, the said tongue projecting toward the steel, combined with the other part, B, constructed with an eye, r, to receive the said tongue e, and with an upwardly and outwardly projecting shoulder, t', to enter the opening in the other part, and with projections to clasp the said part B to its` steel, substantially as described,
WM. F. GILBERT. Witnesses:
A. L GILBERT, D. T.OsBoRN.
