This invention relates to filing drawers for odd paper sheets, and is more particularly concerned with the filing drawers which are commonly used in accounting offices and in which the odd paper sheets are arranged in alphabetical order;
The object of this invention is to provide a filing drawer of that kind wherein the. pile of upstand ing odd sheets rests with one end against a slightly inclined transverse partition which is slidably arranged on the drawer bottom and is adapted to be adjusted in position according to the thickness of the pile of filed odd sheets. Adjacent the pile is slidably disposed, laterally to the space occupied by the upstanding odd sheets, a spacer adapted to be inserted into the pile of sheets to occupy the space of a temporarily removed sheet and thus serve as an indicator which will enable the user to locate the place assigned to the previously removed sheet without necessity of looking for the proper place corresponding to such removed sheetaccording to the alphabetical grouping order of the filed sheets. Thus, considerable time is saved in the handling of filing drawers of this kind. The filing drawer is simple and inexpensive in construction and has considerable advantages in the daily handling of filed odd sheets in banking ofiices and the like.
The invention is described with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawings, of which:
Fig. l is a top plan view of the filing drawer for odd paper sheets.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of same.
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of same.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig.5 is a side elevational view partly broken away to show the slidable transverse partition and its adjustment mechanism in its outer limiting position.
Fig. 6 is a detailed View in horizontal section showing at the end wall of the drawer a paper sheet covered with a movably mounted glass plate to keep the note-bearing sheet. visible to the user. I
The drawer of this invention. iscomposed of a supporting base I, preferably made of wood, to which are secured two longitudinal lower wooden bolsters 2 adapted to maintain the base I spaced from the surface on which the drawer is placed for its use. The base I forms the bottom of a drawer which latter is completed by two vertical side walls 3 and 4, a slightly inclined end wall 5 between said side walls and arranged at a point about one-third the length of the drawer and projecting upwardly above the side wallet and 4,
and a slightly inclined end wall a which is slightly lower than the side walls 3 and 4.
The longitudinal space between the walls 5 and 6 is provided to receive a pile of upstanding odd paper sheets i such as commonly used in banking offices and the like for recording clients datas and which are usually grouped in alphabetical order of the clients names. The pile of odd sheets I rests with the lower edges of the' sheets on a sheet having a rough or grained surface such as sandpaper 8 laid on the supporting base I, and the pile of odd sheets 1 adjustably rests with the last sheet situated farthest away from the inclined wall 5 of the drawer, against a .raised partition 9 which is slightly inclined oppositely to the inclination of the wall 5, so that thespace adapted to receive the pile of odd sheets I will become wider from bottom to the top. The raised partition 9 is slidably supported by means of an angular metal plate in secured to'the center of the lower portion of the rear face of the partition 9 and projects downwardly in verticaldirece.
tion. The lower edge of the plate ID has an opening I l formed therein through which extends a guide bar l2 horizontally mounted in a recess 13 formed in the central longitudinal portion of.
the base I. The guide bar I2 is secured with one end in a horizontal hole [4 formed in the outer end of the recess l3 and with its other end in a horizontal hole l5 formed in the inner end of the recess IS. The bar l2 has formed therein a series of spaced apart holes l6 through any one of which an angular stop I"! can be selectively inserted for securing the partition 9 in the selected position. The partition remains spaced apart from the top face of the base and the rough sur-- backward perpendicularly to the partition 9.
Above the brackets 20 there are secured to the lateral portions of the rear face of the partition 9 slidable guides each formed by two plates 22 and 23 spaced apart by collars 24 and 25 mounted on screws '26 and 2! passing through holes which are formed in said plates 22 and 23 and being secured to the partition 9. The inner spaces of said slidable guides between each pair of plates 22 and 23 are adapted to receive the inward bent ends of two metal rods 28 and 29 which at their other outward bent end are rotatably supported in metal sockets 30 and SI secured to the inner face of the vertical side walls 3 and 4 of the drawer, the metal rods 28 and 29 being joined together between their ends by a horizontal pivot bar 32 passing through holes formed in the lateral portions of the yoke I3 and in the rods 28 and 29, thus forming a pivotal connection between the yoke l8 and the oscillatory bars 28 and 29 arranged in crossed position diagonally with the lateral portions of the yoke l3, as it is shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The yoke i8 is made of a flat rod and it has its free end bent angularly to form a handle for operating the described mechanism for causing the partition 9 to slide lengthwise of the supporting base I forming the drawer bottom.
At the outside of one of the drawer side walls there is disposed a sheet spacer consisting of a finger 33 which consists of a metal strip bent perpendicularly at its outer end to form a support for the users fingers so that it is adapted to be pressed downwardly or upwardly when the finger 35 is to be inserted between two odd sheets of the pile i or withdrawn therefrom. The stip 33 is mounted pivotally by means of a horizontal pin 34 at the forked top end of a slidably adjustable vertical post 35 which is also made of a metal strip bent perpendicularly upon itself at an intermediate point thereof and has at its lower end an opening through which of;- tends a guide bar 36 extending horizontally in parallel arrangement to the outer face of the vertical side wall 3 and spaced therefrom by collars 3i and 31 mounted on screws 38 and 39 which secure said guide bar and collars to said vertical side wall 3. In order to prevent the finger 33 from slipping in its raised position beyond the end wall limiting the drawer, there is provided a stop Ml fixed to one of the side walls 4! which will be later described.
The inclined end wall 5 forms the rear wall of a closed compartment that is formed at the end of the drawer that is opposite the mechanism for moving the partition 9 by two tapered side .walls 45 forming an upward extension of the side walls 3 and 4 of the drawer, a front wall having a raised portion 42 inclined oppositely the wall 5 and a horizontal portion 43 to the fore edge of which is hinged by hinges 44 an angular lid 45 which normally rests with its lower edge on the top face of the base I, and a top wall 46 secured to the top edges of the wall 5 and wall portion 42 and which projects at the front of the latter. A transparent plate 49 for instance made of glass, is arranged between two lateral jambs 4i and a stop bar d8 fixed in horizontal transversal position on the horizontal portion 43 and is adapted to cover any notebearin'g paper sheet 55 which it is desired to display permanently visible to the user. Said transparent plate 49 is kept slightly spaced from the wall portion Q2 by the fork 5'! formed at the end of a sheet-metal arm 52 passing through a slot 53 which is formed at one side of the wall portion 42 adjacent one of the side walls 4| and which is pivotally mounted on a horizontal screw E l secured to the inn r face of said wall, said arm 52 having beyond the fork 5| an outwardly extending lateral lug 55 serving as a hold for the fingers when it be desired to cause the transparent sheet 59 to tilt about its lower edge for facilitating the insertion or withdrawal of a paper sheet 5! The inner space of the compartment is adapted to store writing articles, such as inkstands, pen
4 oils or the like. The angular lid 45 has secured thereto a small angular plate 56 projecting at one side and ending in a lug 57 for raising said lid 45 from its seat.
The mode of operation of this filing drawer is as follows: When it is necessary to increase the number of odd sheets I, the stop I! is removed, and by gripping the raised central portion of the yoke IS, the partition 9 is caused to slide backward on the lower guide bar [2 to a suitable position in which it is fixed by inserting the stop I! in the hole I6 that is nearest to the slidable plate l0. When one of the sheets has been withdrawn from the sheet pile 1, the finger 33 is operated by causing it to rotate downward in front of the place occupied by the withdrawn sheet until it projects in the pile I right in the place formerly occupied by the withdrawn sheet. When it is desired to reinsert the withdrawn sheet,'such insertion can be made without any loss of time, for the finger 33 will indicate the withdrawn sheets place. To withdraw the finger 33, the handle thereof is pressed downwardly, whereupon the finger 33 will be raised outwardly from the pile I by rotating on its pivot/'34. o
It is obvious that changes may be made in the slidable assemblage and operative mechanism for the adjustable partition of the drawer, as well as in the shape and assemblage of the sheets spacer, without thereby altering the essential character of the invention, which is such as claimed hereinafter,
