JOHN II. GOES AND FREDERICK L. GOES, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
SCREWWRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,597', dated January 24, 1882.
Application filed December 19, 1881.
To all w/ Lom 'at may concern Be it known that we, JOHN II. GOES and FREDERICK L. Cons, both of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Screw-Wrenches; and we declare the following to be a. description of' our said invention sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification;
Our invention consists iu a peculiarly-constructed handle l'or wrenches provided with a metal re-enforce or guard about the central portion of the wood and finished Hush with the surface thereof, the respective parts being combined as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a wrench embracing our invention, one-half of the handle heilig shownin longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view at line x w, and Fig.,3 is a side view of the several pieces of which the handle is composed separately shown.
In reference, A denotes the wrench-bar, B the sliding jaw, G the rosette and screw, D the ferrule and step, and A the bar-shank, all of the ordinary construction as heretofore einployed in the wellknown Goes wrench.
rIhe handle F we construct and arrange in the manner illustrated; Itis composed of two pieces or thimbles of wood, F and F2, a central re-enforce or metal ring, I, and the cupped tip-nut K, these several parts being` formed and located in relation to each other as shown. rlhe upper thitnble or wood piece, It", is provided with a tenon or shoulder, d, to fit the lower end of the ferrule D, and also has its lower end reduced or shouldered at e to tit the re-enforce ring I. The lower thimble or wood piece, F2', is provided with similar reductions or shoulders, liandf, at either end, respectively tittng the re-ent'orce ring I and cupped top of the tip-nut K. rIhe end surfaces, m m', of the wood parts Itl E2 are squared ofi' to match each other and to fit close when the handle is put together, the united width of the shouldered ends e andi being the same as the width of the ring I. The surfaces m m can be glued or (No model.)
cemented when the parts are pnt together. rIhe ring I can be cast from malleableirou or made from other suitable metal. It is formed to tit tightly over the shouldered ends e and i, and its surf-.ice is finished off tiush with the surface ofthe wood portions, so as to leave no projec- -tions on the handle. The parts of the handle are slipped over the bar-shank A -in their proper order, as shown, and are clamped together by the tip-nut K, the pressure of which forces the ends of the wood at the respective shoulders firmly against the edges et' the metal rings and.
Thewoods or thirnbles for the handles' can be formed from small pieces, or, itl preferred, canbe made in full lengths and sawed apart to receive the re-enforce ring I. In the latter ycase the recess for the ring should be formed sufticiently wider than the ring to allow for the saw-kerf.
What we claim as of our invention,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. rlhe within-described handle for screwf wrenches, composed of the wood portions Fv F2, respectively provided with end shoulders, d e if, and the re-enforce or ring I, surrounding the junction of said wood parts, with its exterior surface finished ott' flush with the surface of the wood, as hereinbefore set forth.
The combination, with the wrench-bar shank A and I'errule D, of the wood thiinbles or parts E F2, having end shoulders, d e and if, and matchingsurfaces m m', the'metal reent'orce ring I, surrounding the center orjunction of the wood thimbles and finished iiush with the exterior thereof, and the cupped tipnut K, as hereinbefore shown and described. Witness our hands this 30th day of November, A. D. 1881.
