Description
(ModeL) l P. MUSSER.
LOG DECK 0F SAW MILLS. v No. 252,499 T Patented Jan. 17,1882.
PETER MU ssEE, 0E
PATENT OFFICE.
Mose AT INE, IOWA.
LOG-DECKOF SAW-MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,499, dated January 17, 1882.
Application filed May 17, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, PETER MUSSER, a cititzen ofthe United States, residing at Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Log-Decks of Saw-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in log-decks in which the logs are held on an in clined plane and delivered to the saw-carriage as required; and the objects of my improvements are, by means of simple and easily controlled mechanism,t0 hold the logs in place on the inclined plane and to deliver them to the saw-carriage from the plane as they are wanted. I attain these objects bythe mechanism substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of a log'deck embodying my invention, showing the logs held. in position thereon by the radial arms,'also the usual carriage for receiv: ing the logs therefrom; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the log-deck.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the inclined plane or deck on which the logs are supported and revolved. This inclined planeor log-deck, which may be of the ordinary construction, has suitably connected to it a rotating shaft, 0, which carries two or more sets of radially-arranged arms, B, one of said arms in each set being held at right angles to the inclined plane or deck, thus preventing the movement of the logs.
The mechanism I prefer to use in holding the arms in the position above indicated is as follows-viz., a sliding bar, D, controlled and moved backward or forward by a suitable lever, 0, operated by hand or foot power, the radial arm next behind the one holding the log striking the under side'ot' the bar D, as
shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1,-thereby holding and releasing the radial arms, Ido not wish to be understood as confining myself thereto, as any suitable holding and releasing mechanism may be substituted, so long as it will hold the arms stationary, but permit a partial rotation of said arms by the weight of the log when the stop or holding mechanism is tripped or released.
I The radial arms and the shaft to which they are connected are also susceptible of modification or change so long as the arms are capable of a rotary motion, a continuous shat'tlbein g prel'erabl y. used.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- 1. In an inclined plane or log-deck of sawmills, the combination, with rotary arms, of a suitable stop mechanism, substantially as shown, to hold said arms, but permit of their partial rotation by the weight of the log when the stop is tripped or-released. substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an inclined plane or log-deck of a sawmill, the combination, with rotating arms, of a stop mechanism consisting of a sliding bar operated by a suitable lever, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
PETER MUSSERL
