Description

(No Model.)
G. S. MOTT.
TELEGRAPHIG SOUNDER.
No. 252,497. Patented Jan.1'7,1882.
J? wi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GARRET S. MOTT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TELEGRAPHIC SOUNDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,497, dated January 17, 1882.
Application tiled November 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARRE'P S. MO'IT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Phila delphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Telegraphic Sounder, of which the fullowing is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct an efficient telegraphic sounder, and this objectIattain by combining with the electromagnet and armature an adjustable permanent magnet, which acts on the armature with the electro-magnet.
The figure in the accompanying drawing represents a side view of my improved Morse sounder.
011 the base A are mounted the coils of the electro-magnet B, supported in the frame I) and post I), as in an ordinary relay, and being adjustable toward and from the armature D by means of the spring b and nut b fitting the screw-rod carried by the magnet and passing through the post I). The terminals of the coils .are connected to posts P P. The armatureleverD is pivotedto lugs on the base, and ispro- \ided with a non-adjustable retracting spring or a weighted arm, (I, and its extent of motion is limited by stops 0 e.
In addition to the usual armature, d, the armature-lever carries a second armature, 6?, for the permanent magnet F, which in the present instance is carried by the electromagnet B, having its screw-rod adapted to a block,
m, carried by the electro-magnet, and having its front end guided in the frame I). This permanent magnet can be adjusted toward and from the armature-lever by means of the nut f and springf, as will be readily understood. As this permanent magnet acts on the armature-lever with and in the same direction as the electro-magnet, the adjustment of the permanent magnet to increase or diminish its attractive effect will compensate for the variations in the current passing through the coils .of the electro-magnet.
I claim as my invention- 1. A telegraphic sounder in which an elec troauagnet is combined with an armaturelever and stops, and an adjustable permanent magnet adapted to act on and attract the armature-lever with and in the same direction as the electro-magnet.
2. The combination of the electro-magnet with an armature lever having two armatures, a non-adjustable retractor, and an adjustable permanent magnet on the same side of the arn'iature as the electro-magnet, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GARRET S. MOTI.
