The present invention relates to improvements lin chucks having movable gripping-jaws for hold- `ing work-pieces to be operated on by tools or to hold tools for performing operations on a Workpiece.
More particularly, the present invention relates to improvements in compensating-jaw chucks, i. e., chucks having a plurality of gripping-jaws which may be simultaneously in grip- .ping engagement with .a work-piece or the like to grip the same, despite the fact that suchworkpiece or the like may not be located centrally with respect to the chuck-structure or be nonsymmetrical in shape.
One of the main objects of the presentinven- '"tionis to provide a superior compensating-jaw Achuck having al construction and arrangement of 'parts whereby an Voli-center work-piece or the like mayv be eiiectively held by a plurality' of gripping-jaws without requiring independent manual adjustment of such Vgripping-jaws.
Another object of the .present invention is to provide Aa superior chuck of the character referred to capable of holding an off-center or nonsymrnetrical work-piece .or the like without causing the binding of the elements vof the chuck.,
Afurther object of the present invention is `to provide a superior compensating-jaw chuck of the general character referred to and havingfits jaw-operating elements constructedfand arranged in a simple and compact manner and .operable without a harmful degree of binding or distortion of the parts.
With the above and other objects-in view, -as will appear'to Vthose Vskilled in-the artirom the present disclosure, this invention includes walifeaguideways i3, each of which receives tures in the said-disclosure which are novel-over the prior art.

The gripping-jaws l5 above referred to may be of any one of a Vwide `variety of forms and in the present instance the said gripping-jaws are stepped to provide three inwardly-facing gripping-steps it, il and l-, any one of which is adapted to be engaged with a work-piece or the like which it is desired to'have the chuck grip.

Each of the-said bell-crank levers 2l, in addition Yto its forwardly-projecting arm 2Q, includes also an arm EQeXtending inwardly toward the-longitudinal axis of the body ill and hav- .ing a cylindrically-contoured terminal as is especiallywell shown in Fig. 10.
Each of the bell-crank of coupling-levers 2I is accommodated in one of three similar recesses 23, one of which is located rearwardly of each of the guideways I3. Each of the said bell-crank levers 2I is mounted for turning movement upon one of three similar rods 2Ia which are carried by the body Ill as is especially well shown in Fig. 4.
The cylindrically-contoured terminal of each of the inwardly-extending arms 22 of the bellcrank levers 2| is received in a slot-like recess 24 extending diametrically across the outer face of the disk-like head 25 of one of three similar compensating-members, each generally designated by the reference character 26. In addition to its head 25, each compensating-member 26 is provided with an inwardly-extending threaded Shank 21.
Each of the aforesaid compensating-members 26 is mounted in a two-part compensating operating-head generally designated by the reference character 28 and composed of two opposed plate-like members respectively designated by the reference characters 29 and 30, as is especially Well shown in Fig. 8. The said members 29 and 30 are clamped together in any suitable manner such, for instance, as by a suitable number of screws such as 3I indicated in Fig. 3.
The operating-head 28 is formed on its outer periphery with three cylindrical recesses 32 respectively adapted to receive with a smooth turning fit the head 25 ofA one of the three similar compensating-members 26. Located inwardly of and communicating with each of the recesses 32 just referred to, is one of three internallythreaded sockets 33 receiving with a smooth turning fit the threaded shank of one of the said compensating-members 26.
The two-part operating-head 28 is of ringlike form and is formed internally with a spherically-contoured surface 34 engaging, with a smooth universal oscillating t. the Sphericallycontoured outer surface of a mounting-ring 35.
The mounting-ring 35 above referred to is mounted upon the forwardly-projecting tubular shank 36 of a reciprocating actuating-head generally designated by the reference character 31. In addition to its tubular shank 36, the said actuating head also includes a flange-like bodyportion 38 bearing and guided in the axial passage II in the body I0.
As before noted, the mounting-ring 35 is mounted upon the shank 36 of the actuatinghead 31 and lis clamped in place thereon by means of a retaining-plate 39 threadedly mounted upon the forward end of the tubular shank 36. The periphery of the retaining-plate 39 rides with a smooth sliding t in the axial passage II in the body I and, in effect, forms part of the actuating-head 31. As will be noted by reference to Figs. 3 and 5, there is sufficient space between the forward face of the body-portion 38 and the rear face of the retaining-plate 39 to permit the two-part operating-head 28 to tilt on the mounting-ring 35, all for purposes as will more fully hereinafter appear.
Projecting rearwardly from the chuck-structure and rigidly attac-hed to the reciprocating actuating-head 31, is an actuating-rod 40 by means of which the gripping-jaws I may be caused to grip a work-piece or to release the same in a manner as will more fully hereinafter appear. The actuating-rod 49 may be recipro- Cated for the purposes just indicated either manually or by means of hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical means common in the art.
The closure-plate I2 previously referred to and which is recessed into the front face of the body I5, is provided centrally with a threaded passage 4I receiving the threaded shank 42 of a removable and replaceable conical centeringmember 43 similar to a lathe-center.
As is indicated in the drawings (Figs. 3 and 5), the closure-plate I2 is notched to provide for the clearance of the jaw-carriers I4, and for the purpose of excluding dirt and chips from the interior of the chuck-structure, each of the said jaw-carriers is provided with a dirt-guard 44 which reciprocates against the front face of the closure-plate I2.
Adjacent its outer periphery, the body I0 is formed with three (more or less) passages 45 extending from front to rear therethrough and through which suitable mounting-screws (not shown) may be extended to secure the chuckstructure to a face-plate or the like of any desired machine.
The operation of the structure of Figs. 1 to 10 inclusive For purposes of description, let it be assumed that the reciprocating actuating-head 31 and the parts carried thereby are moved forwardly relative to the body I0 into substantially the positions in which they are indicated in Fig. 3. Under the conditions just described, the jawcarriers I4 and hence. gripping-jaws I5 will be retired outwardly preparatory to gripping a workpiece such, for instance, as the Work-piece indicated by the dot-and-dash lines 46 in Fig. 5.
In instances where a work-piece such as 46 above referred to is provided in its face with a centering-recess for the reception of the point of the centering-member 43, such work-piece will be held in the desired central position for machining, grinding, or the like, by the said centering-member in the manner indicated in Fig. 5. It may further be assumed that the work-piece 46 has one or more portions of its outer surfaces nonsymmetrical, eccentric, or otherwise off-center with respect to the central-longitudinal axis of the chuck-structure and hence also with respect to the said centering-member 43.
Now when it is desired to grip a work-piece such as 46, the actuating-head 31 may be drawn rearwardly by means of the actuating-rod 40, whereupon all of the three gripping-jaws I5 will be urged inwardly.
Inasmuch as the work-piece 46 is not symmetrical with respect to the centering-member 43, one of the gripping-jaws I5 will seat against the said work-piece before either or both of the remaining two gripping-jaws seat. The full seating of all of the gripping-jaws I5 is, however, assured by the fact that the operating-head 28 may tilt on. the mounting-ring 35 in the manner indicated in Fig. 5,
As the operating-head 28 tilts as above described, one or more of the compensating-members 26 Will be forced to turn in the said operating-head, depending upon the degree and direction of the tilt referred to. As is indicated in Figs. 3 and 5, the compensating-members 35 do not have their heads 25 fully seated in the recesses 32 in the operating-head 28 and hence the said compensating-members are free to turn about an axis substantially perpendicular with respect to the central-longitudinal axis of the chuck-structure, to thus avoid a twisting strain rabe-ages 'being applied :to @the arms i22 .of vthe-Fbjell-crank levers 2 I, under the circumstances abovefreferred t0.

Each of the aforesaid compensating-members 5I is externally. threaded and is mounted with capacity forturning .movement inthe .adjacent oneoi three (more-or less) intern-ally-threaded `sockets 52 formed in the outer periphery-of ra compensating operating-head generally designated-by the reference character 53 and discharging` functions substantially corresponding to the functions discharged by the operating-headrZS before described.

As the operating-head 53 tilts, as above described, one or more of the compensating-members 5I will turn in the appropriate socket or sockets 52 in the said operating-head,depending `on the degree and the direction of the tilt referred to.
The structure of Figs. 11 to 14 inclusive may be utilized in various ways such, for instance, as those described in connection with the structure of Figs. 1 to lOnclusive.

Rsum
All of the chuck-structures previously described herein have, in common, a compensatingjaw feature whereby nonsymmetrical or oi -center work-pieces may be eiTectively gripped without causing a cramping of the chuck mechanism, since the various compensating-members 26, 5|, 64, or the like, are all mounted in a manner as will permit them to turn about an axis substantially perpendicular to the central-longitudinal axis of the chuck-structure, when' such movement is required.
The invention may be carried out in other vspecic ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming Within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
I claim: 1
1. A compensating-jaw chuck, including in combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried bythe said body and movable with respect thereto toward and away from each other;- and operating-means for concurrently moving the said jaws, the said operating-means including a compensating operating-head movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body and tiltable with respect to the said axis, a plurality of compensating-members carried by the said compensating operating-head and each independently oscillatable with respect thereto about an axis substantially perpendicular with respect to the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, and a plurality of couplingmembers respectively operatively interconnecting `one of the said oscillatable compensating-mem-V bers with one of the said jaws to effect the-movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-head is moved in a direction-substantially parallel with the central-longitudinal axisof the said body.
2. A compensating-jaw chuck, including lin combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect theretov toward and away from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the'said jaws, the said operating-means including a compensating operating-head movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body and tiltable with respect to the said axis, a plurality of compensating-members threadedly connected to the said compensating operating-head and each independently oscillatable with respect thereto about an axis substantially perpendicular with respect to the centrallongitudinal axis of the said body, and a plurality of coupling-members respectively' operatively interconnecting one of the said oscillatable compensating-members with one of the said jaws to elect the movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-headA is moved in a direction substantially parallel with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body.
3. A compensating-jaw chuck, including in combination: a body, a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect thereto toward and away from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the said jaws, the said operating-means including a` compensating operating-head movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body and tiltable with respect to the said axis, the said operating-head having a plurality of sockets in its outer periphery, a plurality of compensating-members respectively mounted in the sockets in the said compensating operating-head and each independently oscillatable in its socket and with respect to the said operating-headabout an axis substantially perpendicular with respect .to the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, and a plurality of couplingmembers respectively operatively interconnecting one of the said oscillatable compensatingmembers with one of the said jaws to eiect the movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-head is moved in a direction substantially parallel with the central- `longitudinal axis of the saidbody. e I

A compensating-jaw chuck, including in combination: abody; a plurality of jaws carried by the saidV body and movable with respect thereto towardandaway from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the said jaws, the said operating-means including a cornpensating` operating-head movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body and tiltable with respectv to the said axis, a plurality of compensating-members threadedlyv connected to the said compensating operatingmhead and each independently oscillatable with respecttheretoabout an axis substantially perpendicular with respect tothe centrallongitudinalaxis of the saidbody, each of the said compensating-members` beingformed in itsV outer surface with a recess, and a plurality of coupling-levers respectively operatively interconnecting one of said oscillatable compensatingmembers to one of said jaws to effect the movement ofthe latter when the said-tiltable compensating operating-headis moved in a direction substantially parallel with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, each of said couplinglevers having a portion extending into theV recess of one of the said oscillatable compensating members.

9 A compensating-jaw chuck, including in combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect thereto toward and away from each other; and,v operating-means forconcurrently moving the' said jaws, the said operating-means including ari-actu,-
ating-head= movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body and having a seat, a compensating operatingheadhaving a portion engaging with the saidV seat, the-said operating-head being movable ,withv the saidactuating-head and tiltable with respect, tothe said seat and the said axis, a plurality-of compensating-members carried by the saidcompensating operating-headgand each independently oscillatable withV respect thereto about an axissubstantially perpendicular with respect to theY combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect thereto toward and away from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the saidA jaws, thesaid operating-means including an actuating-head movable in substantial parallelisiA with thefcentral-longitudinal axis of the said body and having a forwardly-facing seat, a compensating operating-head and having a spherically-contoured; portion engaging with the said seat, the
said operating-head being movable with the saidl actuating-head and tiltable with respect to the' said seat and the said axis, a plurality of com-4 pensating-members carriedby the said compensating operating-head and each independently oscillatable with respect thereto about an axis substantially perpendicular vwith respect to the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, and a plurality of coupling-members respectively operatively interconnecting one of the said oscillatable compensating-members with one of the said jaws to effect the movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-head is moved by the said actuating-head in a, direction substantially parallel with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body.

A compensating-jaw chuck, including in combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect thereto toward and away from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the said jaws, the said operating-means including an actuating-head movablein substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body and having a chamber therein which is provided with a, forwardly-facing seat, a compensating operating-head extending` within the chamber in the said actuating-head and having a spherically-contoured portion engaging with the seat in the said chamber, the said operating-head being movable with the said actuating-head and tiltable with respect to the said seat and the said axis, a plurality of compensating-members carried by the said compensating operating-head and each independently oscillatable with respect thereto about an axis substantially perpendicular with respect to the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, and a plurality of coupling-members respectively operatively interconnecting one of the said oscillatable compensating-members with one of the said jaws to eiect the .movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-head is moved by the said actuatingyhead in a direction substantially parallel with thecentral-longitudinalaxis of the said body.

A compensating-jaw chuckgincluding in combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect thereto toward and away from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the said jaws, the said operating-means including an actuating-head movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body and having a seat, a compensating operating-head having a plurality of threaded-sockets in its outer periphery and also having a portion engaging with the said seat, the said operatinghead being movable with the said actuating-head and tiltable with respect to the said seat and the said axis, a plurality of threaded compensatingmembers respectively in the sockets in the said compensating operating-head and each independently oscillatable therein about an axis substantially perpendicular with respect to the central-longitudinal axis of the said bodyfand a plurality of coupling-members respectively operatively interconnecting one of the said oscillatable compensating-members with one of the said jaws to effect the movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-head is moved by the said actuating-head in a direction substantailly parallel with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body.

A compensating-jaw chuck, including in combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect thereto toward and away from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the said jaws', the said operating-means including an actuating-head movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, a compensating operating-head articulately connected to the said actuating-head for move'- ment therewith, the said operating-head being tiltable on the said actuating-head with respect to the aforesaid axis, a plurality of compensating-members carried by the said compensating operating-head and each independently oscillatable with respect thereto about an axis substantially perpendicular with respect to the centrallongitudinal axis of the said body, and a plurality of coupling-members respectively operatively interconnecting one of the said oscillatable compensating-members with one of the said jaws,l to effect the movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-head is moved by the said actuating-head in a direction substantially parallel with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body.

A compensating-jaw chuck, including in combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect thereto toward and away from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the said jaws, the said operating-means including an actuating-head movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body and having a spherically-contoured outer peripheral portion, a compensating operating-head having a spherically--contoured inner portion engaging with the said spherically-contoured outer portion, the said operating-head being tiltable on the said actuating-head with respect to the aforesaid axis, a plurality of compensating-members carried by the said compensating operatinghead and each independently oscillatable with respect thereto about an axis substantially perpendicular with respect to the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, and a plurality of coupling-members respectively operatively interconnecting one of the said oscillatable compensatingmembers with one of the said jaws to eiect the movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-head is movedby the said actuating-head in a direction substantially parallel with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body.

A compensating-jaw chuck, including in combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect thereto toward and away from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the said jaws,the said operating-means including an actuating-head movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, a compensating operating-head articulately connected to the said actuating-head f or movement therewith, the said operating-head being tiltable on the said actuating-head with respect to the aforesaid axis and having a plurality of sockets in its outer periphery, a plurality of compensating-members respectively extending into the said sockets and each independently oscillatable therein about an axis substantially perpendicular with respect to the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, and a plurality of couplingmembers respectively operatively interconnecting one of the said oscillatable compensatingmembers with one of the said jaws to effect the movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-head is moved by the said actuating-head in a direction substantially parallel with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body.

A compensating-jaw chuck, including in combination: a body; a plurality of jaws carried by the said body and movable with respect there- 13 to toward and away from each other; and operating-means for concurrently moving the said jaws, the said operating-means including an actuating-head movable in substantial parallelism with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body and having a spherically-contoured outer peripheral portion, a compensating operatinghead having a spherically-contoured inner portion engaging with the said spherically-contoured outer portion, the said operating-head being tiltable on the said actuating-head with respect to the aforesaid axis and having a plurality of sockets in its outer periphery, a plurality of compensating-members respectively extending into the said sockets and each independently oscillatable therein about an axis substantially perpendicular with respect to the central-longitudinal axis of the said body, and a plurality of coupling-members respectively operatively interconnecting one of the said oscillatable compen- 14 sating-members with one of the said jaws to effect the movement of the latter when the said tiltable compensating operating-head is moved by the said actuating-head in a direction substan` tially parallel with the central-longitudinal axis of the said body.
