This invention relates to shirt ironers and the object of the invention is to provide a steam heated device for ironing shirts in which the shirt is positioned on the device and the device is expanded and heated so as to iron the shirt and dry it at the same time.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shirt ironer mounted on a base and having a body which is expandable horizontally and also provided with arms which are expandable in diameter.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the expansion is limited by the size of the shirt and in which inserts are provided to fit in the space contruction by which these objects are attained is shown which- Fig. l is a front elevation of the device with a in the accompanying drawings in shirt mounted thereon and partly broken away to show the construction.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line 3-3 f Fig. 1.
The device comprises a hollow base l having a tubular standard 2 extending upwardly there-J from. Extending from the sides of the tubular standard 2 are a pair of tracks 3 on which the rollers Ll ride. These rollers 4 are mounted on brackets 5 which are attached to the two ironer halves 5 and l'. By this arrangement the two halves of the ironer may be moved toward or away from each other and the two halves are drawn together by the springs 8 which are attached to the central support 2. An extension 9 is provided at the upper end of the central support 2, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and a horizontal rod Iii is mounted in the portion 9. The hollow insertI members Il are each provided with a hub l2 slidably mounted on the rod Ill and springs are provided between the hubs and the central portion 9 to urge the members Il outwardly as the ironer halves B and 'I are moved apart so as to ll the space between the ironer halves. Within the tubular support 2 is a piston I3 provided with ports I4 and a spring i5 is positioned between the piston and the top of the tube 2. This spring normally urges the piston downwardly so that the ports i4 register with the conduits I6 and these conduits l are slidable in the tubes il which are secured to the body portions 6 and l. A steam pipe line i8 leads to the valve le on the base and this valve is controlled by means of a foot pedal 2i). When this foot pedal is pushed to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the steam may how through the pipe 2l into the base and up through the piston i3 and through the ports Ell and into the tubes IG and Il. This pushes the two halves of the body outwardly against the tension of the springs 8 and this expansion movement ceasesas soon as the shirt is drawn tight by the expansion of the two body members.
The pressure of the steam may be regulated to produce just the desired pressure in expanding the shirt. As the shirt is fully expanded, the steam then acts in pushing the piston upwardly against the spring l5 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. l. At this time the piston skirt is raised above the conduits 22 allowing the steam to pass through the conduits 22 and 23 into the double walled body portions 6 and This steam heats these body portions thus drying and ironing the shirt body.
The arms shown in Figs. 1 and 3 comprise two expandable portions 2li and 25 which may be moved apart and in which the spaces produced by moving these portions apart is lled by the insertsy 2G. These inserts may be spring ex'- panded in theswame manner as the inserts ll shown in Fig. 2 and theportions 2a and 25 are expanded by steam in the same manner as the body. For this purpose, aflexible conduit 2l leads from the tube 2 to a hollow member 2S mounted at the shoulders of the body. A central tube 29 is provided which is fitted over the member 28 so that the member 28 forms a pivot for the sleeve or arm allowing the arm to be turned to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 when putting the shirt onto the device. The upper member 2li is stationary and is directly connected by means of the tubes 30 and 3l with the tube 29 and it will be noted thatthe tube 3|] is close-d at the `end while the tube 3l opens into the double walled member 24. The tube 29 is also provided with tubular portions 32 and 33 and the tube 33 opens through a tube 34 into the interior of the member 24. A piston 35 s provided in the tube 29 and a spring 36 is provided above this piston which is similar to the construction of the piston I3 and spring I5 in the tube 2.
In the first position, the ports 31 in the piston allow the steam to pass through the tube 32 and force the member 25 downwardly and as the piston moves to the position shown in full lines, the steam may pass through the tubes 3| and 33 into the interior of the members 24 and 25 to heat the same. The inserts 26, shown in Fig. 3, are pressed outwardly by springs 38 and the members 26 are heated by conduits 39 leading from the tube 29 as shown in Fig. 1. The inserts. l I are also heated by flexible conduits 40 leading from the central tube 2, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device is very simple and e'icient in operation, will not easily get out of order, will quickly and eliciently iron a shirt and provides a.
device which accomplishes the objects described.
Having thus fully described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. In a shirt ironer, a base having a hollow vertical extension, a pair of body halves supported on and slidable horizontally in relation to said vertical extension, spring means tending to draw the body halves toward each other, means for admitting steam under pressure to the base and hollow extension, valve means allowing the steam under pressure to force the body halves apart, means for applying steam to heat the body halves, a pair of spring pressed inserts urged into the space between the body halves as the body halves are moved apart, the inserts being hollow, a conduit connecting each insert with the vertical extension, a pair of arm portions pivotally mounted on the body portions, steam operated means for expanding the arm portions and means for heating the arm portions with the steam, a pair of spring pressed inserts urged into the space between the arm' portions as the arm portions are expanded, the inserts and arm portions being hollow, and steam conduits connected to the inserts and arm portions to heat the same.

In a shirt ironer, a base having a hollow vertical extension, a pair of body halves supported on and slidable horizontally in relation to said vertical extension, the body halves being hollow, spring means tending to draw the body halves toward each other, means for admitting steam under pressure to the base and hollow extension, a pair of conduits opening from the hollow extension, the arrangement being such that the steam may pass through the conduits to force the body halves apart, a pair of conduits leading from the hollow extension to the interior of the body halves and a pair of inserts supported on the vertical extension, spring means tending to expand the inserts into the space between the body members, the inserts being hollow, and a con- 4 duit connecting the interior of each insert with the hollow extension, said spring means tending to force the inserts outwardly as the body parts are expanded.
3. In a shirt ironer, a base having a hollow vertical extension, a pair of body halves supported on and slidable horizontally in relation to said vertical extension, spring means tending to draw the body halves toward each other, means for admitting steam under pressure to the base and hollow extension, valve means allowing the steam under pressure to force the body halves apart, means for applying steam to heat the body halves, a pair of spring pressed inserts urged into the space between the body halves as the body halves are moved apart, the inserts being hollow, a conduit connecting each insert with the vertical eX- tension, a pair of arm portions pivotally mounted on the body portions, steam' operated means for expanding the arm portions and means for heating the arm portions with the steam.
4. In a shirt ironer, a base, a hollow tube extending upwardly rom the base, a pair of horizontal tracks supported on the hollow tube, a pair of body halves slidably mounted on the tracks for expansion or contraction, the body halves being hollow, spring means tending to contract the body halves, means for admitting steamunder pressure to the base and upright tube, a pair of conduits opening from the tube and arranged upon application of steam under pressure to press the body halves outwardly against the tension of the springs and a pair of telescoping tubes opening from the upright tube into the hollow body halves.
5. In a shirt ironer, a base, a hollow tube extending upwardly from the base, a pair of horizontal supports extending from opposite sides of said tube, a pair of body halves slidably mounted upon said supports for expansion and contraction, spring means interconnecting said halves and said tube tending to contract said body halves, means for admitting steam under pressure to the base. and upright tube, and a pair of conduits opening from the tube and arranged upon application of steam under pressure to press the body halves outwardly against the tension of the springs.
