3 Claims. (01. 155- 33) The present invention relates to new and usefulimprovements in stools and more particularly to an adjustable stool.
An important object of theinventionis to provide a stool having a vertically adjustable padded seat for raising and lowering to a desired height.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hollow base in which a stationary verticalscrew is supported and providing the seat with a :tube
at its underside for adjustment on the screw and wherein the tube forms a guard for the screw and provides a dustproof protector therefor.
A still further object is to provide an adjustable stool of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the seat in its lowered position;
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on a line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on a line 33 of Figure 2;
and,
Figures 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 4-4 and -5 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration we have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a hollow base including rigid top and bottom discs 6 and 'l to which arigid side wall 8 of suitable material is secured, the side walls 3 and upper surface of the upper disc 6 being covered with leather or other suitable decorative material 9.
A screw I is supported in a vertical position in the base with its lower end fixedly secured in a collar ll recessed in the center of lower disc I, the collar ll being formed with a flange l2 secured to the upper surface of the bottom disc I by bolts or the like I3 and which also engage a clamping plate 12 at the bottom of disc 1. The upper surface of flange I2 is formed with a channeled ring M in which an absorbent pad i5 is held for saturation with oil, th pad surrounding the lower portion of screw it].

A collar 24 is positioned on the lower smooth portion of stem 22 with a flange 25 at the upper edge of the collar to enter the upper counterbore of collar I! for engaging bushing is when the tube i5 is raised to its uppermost position.
A ball bearing assembly 26 is positioned on the smooth portion of the stem 22 above collar 24 with a washer 21 held on top of the ball bearing assembly by a nut 23 and a lock nut 23, the washer snugly fitting in tube It to brace the tube when the latter is lowered, the bearing assembly 26 facilitating rotation of the washer with the tube.
The upper end of tube It projectsupwardly through the central portion of a disc 28 forming v the bottom of. a padded seat 29, the tube having a flange 30 secured to the bottom 28 by bolts 3|.
An inverted cup 32 is secured by cleats 33 to the upper surface of bottom 28 to form a chamber 34 to accommodate upper end of stem 22 and the nuts 23 and 23' when the seat 29 is moved into its lowermost position. A ring 35 is secured in the upper end of tube l6 forming a stop for washer 21 during downward movement of the seat.
An annular finish plate 36 surrounds tube I6 and rests on top of base 5.
In the operation of the stool, seat 29 is raised and lowered by rotating the same and which also rotates tube i6 and feeds nut or collar IT at the lower end of the tube on stationary screw it.
When nut or collar I! reaches its uppermost position its strikes bearing assembly 26 and further turning movementof the seat 2.4 will have a tendency to bind the bearing assembly against washer 21 in a friction locking action to restrain turning of seat 29 in an upward movement.
When seat 29 is lowered a similar friction lockingaction will occur between ring 35' and washer 21. r
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in 3 this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A stool comprising a stationary base, a vertical screw fixed to the base and enclosed therein, a tube telescoping on the screw, an internally threaded collar fixed in the lower end of the tube and travelling on the screw, a seat supported at the top of the tube, a bearing assembly secured to the upper end of the screw, a washer on top of the bearing and also secured to the screw and closely fitted in the tube to brace the tube at a point above the collar, said collar being frictionally held against the bearing assembly upon a complete raising movement of the tube, and a stop ring in the upper end of the tube frictionally engaged by the washer upon a complete lowering movement of the seat.
2. A stool comprising a stationary base, a verscrew, an internal stop in the upper end of the-a0 1,194,551
tube, and friction locking means carried at the upper end of the screw and engageable respectively with the nut and stop upon movement of the tube into its upper and lower positions.
3. A stool comprising a stationary base, a vertical screw fixed to the base and enclosed therein, a tube telescoping on the screw, an internally threaded collar fixed in the lower end of the tube and travelling on the screw, a seat supported at the top of the tube, a bearing assembly secured to the upper end of the screw, and a washer on top of the bearing and also secured to the screw and closely fitted in the tube to brace the tube at a point above the collar, said collar being frictionally held against the bearing assembly upon a complete raising movement of the tube.
