AUTOMATIC HEAT CONTROL SPRINKLER HEAD Filed Oct. 5, 1947 Inventor Glen H. Cameron 2mm W Patented Sept. 26, 1950 AUTOMATIC HEAT CONTROL SPRINKLER HEAD Glen H. Cameron, Mattoon, Ill. Application October 3, 1947, Serial No". 777,697
resilient means urging the said means against the said arms, whereby, upon fracturing the fusible material bond as influenced by thermal conditions, a liquid will be emitted.
Another purpose of this invention is to pro- Claims. (01. 169-37) vide antivibration means in connection with the 1 valve closure retaining means.
Another object of this invention is to provide an extremely simple, efiicient device of the nature to be described which lends itself well to commercial manufacture.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in the art, in following the description of the preferred form of the present invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational side view of the preferred form of the present invention;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the invention shown in Figure 1, portions being broken away in section to illustrate details of construction and showing the device in the second position of operation;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the invention shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective exploded view of the valve plates utilized in conjunction with and forming a part of the present invention.
Referring now in detail to the illustrated preferred embodiment of the present invention, like reference characters are used throughout to indicate similar elements thereof.
This invention has been conceived and developed to provide a device for improved functioning and actuation of sprinkler systems utilized commercially throughout building structures and the like. In order to obviate the use of but a single strand or bead of fusible material as a closure bond, the present invention has been developed which provides an increased surface area for use in retaining a fusible material, thermally responsive at a predetermined temperature.
A bonnet I0 is provided with an externally threaded inlet I2 which is adapted to be secured to a suitable liquid supply, such as a Water main or the like. This bonnet l0 also has a partition l4 extending thereacross with an aperture l6 at substantially the longitudinal center thereof.
A pair of valve plates or disks !8 and 20, respectively, are provided, the said disk 18 being adapted to seat in the aperture or bore of the said inlet means l2., Of course, a reduced portion may be provided in association therewith for firm seating within the said hole. The said valve plate 20 also has areduced portion at the upper extremity or surface thereof with .an aperture 22 therein for a purpose to .be described hereinafter.
A pair of bosses 24 and 26, respectively, are provided integral with the said bonnet 10, while pivot pins 28 and 30 extend therethrough. A pair of arms 32 and 34, respectively, are secured 'to each pivot pin and extension plates 36. and 38, respectively, extend at right angular relation relative to each arm 32 and 34. These plates are secured in fixed position through the utility of a conventional fusible material.
A'rod generally indicated .at 4|] is provided through a suitable aperture 42 in the upper portion of the said bonnet Ill and proceeds through the said aperture 16 in the partition I4. This rod is preferably composed of a sleeve 44 having a slot 45 at the upper portion thereof. The said sleeve is also preferably internally threaded for the purpose of receiving an arm 48 in adjustable position in the said bore thereof. Of course, a suitable nut 50 and washer 52 may be utilized in association with securing the said arm 43 in the selected adjusted position relative to the sleeve 44.
Means for resiliently biasing the arm 48 relative to the valve plate is provided. This means is preferably a spring 52 seated on a suitable washer 54 which is positioned on the partition l4 and a second washer 56 engageable with the lower surface of the said nut 50. It is quite obvious that by utility of this expedient the slot 46 is constantly urged against a selected extension plate 36, against the bond of the said fusible material. 7
It will be noted from an inspection of Figure 2 that the lower extremity of the arm 48 is preferably conical, engaging the aperture 22 of the upper valve plate 20.
The operation of the present invention is deemed obvious from the foregoing. At a pre determined temperature, the bond holding the 3 plate extensions 36 and 38 together is broken, thereby permitting the resilient means 52 to urge the rod 48 in out-of-contact relation with the valve plates. The Water pressure in the system will also urge the plates from their seats, thereby effecting sprinkling. The slot 46 engageable with the plate extension 36 effects an anti-twist and anti-vibration means and also assists in the operation and actuation of the invention.
It is apparent that variations may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation is only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
