Description

P 1950 c. H. PETSKEYES I 2,523,230
v An
INVENTOR. Charles. H. Petskeyes Patented Sept. 19, 1950 ROTARY HOOK MEGHANIS M OF MACHINES Charles H. Petskeyes, Davenport,'Iowa, assignor' to Gellman Manufacturing Company, Rock Island, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application February '7, 1948, Serial No. 6,926
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rotary hook mechanism of sewing machines and more particularly to a bobbin casing and carrier in which the carrier provides a track for the casing.
Among the several objects of the invention is to provide in a hook member this track in a manner such that the bobbin casing may be assembled in the track within the hook member by one other than a skilled mechanic and with the least degree of effort and by the use of but a simple common tool, namely a screw driver.
Another equally important object of the invention is to arrange the several elements of my invention in a manner such that the invention may be manufactured at an economical cost without reducing the efficiency sought to be accomplished by the same.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the parts assembled including the hook member with the bobbin casing placed therein;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the same taken on the line indicated by the arrow 33;
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail View of the same taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the several parts embodied in my invention showing the same in exploded relation with respect to each other; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a track shoe embodied in the invention.
The several objects of my invention are accomplished by the preferred form of construction shown in the accompanying drawings.
In this connection the hook member is indicated at H3 and is attached in a conventional manner to the lower shaft (not shown) of the sewing machine. This hook member includes the conventional loop taker I l.
The hook member It] has an internal groove l2 formed in the top edge portion l3 of its side wall I4. A gib ring [5 is provided and this ring l5 provides an internal lateral rib [6 which fits into the upper portion of the groove I2 when the gib ring is connected by means of nuts and bolts I! to the hook member ID. This gib ring l5 provides together with the hook member 10, a track or raceway within which the rib 18 formed on the bobbin casing I9 is received.
The track thus provided by the gib ring I5 and hook member I0 has a removable section 20 which I prefer to term a track shoe. This track shoe has a lateral flange 2| provided with elongated radially extending, transverse openings 22 formed therein. Extending from this flange 2| is an engaging portion 23 which is adapted to engage the rib N3 of the bobbin casing i 9. The track shoe 20 is connected to the hook member as shown in Fig. 5 by means of screws 24. The elongated openings 22 permits the shoe to be adjusted so as to properly position the bobbin casing within the hook member. In Fig. 5 it will be seen that the edge portion 25 of the shoe operatively engages in a groove 26 formed in one side of the rib l8. By adjusting the shoe 20, the bobbin casing may be adjusted relative to the hook member,
By this arrangement lateral clashing between the bobbin casing and the hook member isentirely eliminated. This results in a smooth and silent operation between the bobbin case and the hook member. The arrangement is relatively simple and is highly efficient in use and may be manufactured at an economical cost.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a hook member providing a trackway, a bobbin casing arranged in the hook member and provided with a rib arranged in the trackway, a track shoe adjustably carried by the hook member, and a groove and flange connection between the track shoe and the rib of said casing.
2. In combination, a hook member providing a trackway, a bobbin casing providing a rib operable in the trackway, and means carried by the hook member and engageable with the casing for adjusting the casing radially relative to the hook member, said means comprising a track shoe, means for adjustably connecting the track shoe to the hook member, and flange and groove connection between the track shoe and the rib of said casing.
3. For a combination of the character described comprising a hook member, a gib ring REFERENCES CITED connected to the hook member and providing 4 together with the hook member a, track, a bobbin g f ig gg i are of record m the casing arranged in said hook member and providing a rib projecting into the track for ro- 5 UNITED STATES ATENTS tation with respect thereto and having on one Number Name Date side thereof a groove, and a member mounted 1,996,290 Gunther Apt 2, 1935 on the hook member with an edge portion thereof projecting into the groove to guidingly position the bobbin casing with respect to the hook 10 member.
