My present invention relates to the general class-of dry closets with urinals, and more specifically to a portable bedside urinal which While well adapted for various purposes, is especially designed for employment in hospitals, and-other places, for attachment to the side edge of a bed mattress, for the convenience of an occupant of the bed without the necessity for arising therefrom. The primary purpose of the appliance is the provision of a device of this type that may quickly be attached in position where it is readily accessible for use and self-service by a patient, especially at night, thus relieving a nurse or an orderly from attendance and releasing the attendant for other necessary duties.

The portable appliance includes aminimu number of parts that may be manufactured of desired material, with facility and low cost production, and the parts may be assembled with convenience to assure a structure thatis durable and simple in operation, and efficient in the performance of its required functions.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be described, and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a, complete example of a physical embodiment of. my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged in accord with one mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention. It will however be understood that changes and alterations are contemplated and may be made in these 5 Claims. (Cl. 4110) exemplifying drawings and mechanical structures, within the scope of my claims, without departing from the principles of the invention,

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portable urinal in which my invention is embodied, attached to a bed mattress'for use.

Figure 2 is a face view of the upper portion of the urinal, with the receptacle closed.

Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the receptacle portion of the appliance, showing the closure by dotted lines in open position; and

Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the adjustable, bottom clamp member of the appliance.

In carrying out my invention the parts may be manufactured of light but strong material such as non-corrosive metal, hardened plastic, or other material that may readily be sterilized and maintained in prop r sanitary condition.

In the illustrated form of the invention I employ a receptacle l of suitable size, and preferably of funnel or'cone shape, the lower portion of which is slightly slanted, or declines from the open circular front end toward the rear end, for drainage purposes. The open circular front end is normally closed, as when not in use, by a gate or door 2 that is equipped with an upper hinge 3, and the inner side of the door or gate is provided with a' weight as 4, in order that the closure may readily" be opened by finger-pressure on the exterior knob or lug 5.

When the gate or door is closed. the inside weight 4 provides a load that tightly closes the gate against its'seat, and when the gate is flipped to open position, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, the gate is stabilized againstflapping movements.

' The apex' end of the conical receptacle termimates in a downturned nipple or nozzle 6, and a vertically arranged discharge tube or pipe 1 is rigidly connected to the outlet of the nozzle for drainage from the receptacle.

For readily attaching the appliance to the side edge of the mattress, an upper clamp plate 8 having downturned edges or flanges 9 for clasping the mattress, is horizontally disposed beneath the receptacle and provided with collar l0 fitted around the joint between the nozzle and the discharge tube. The clamp plate and the receptacle may be manufactured as an integral unit, or these parts may be brazed, welded, or otherwise secured together to form a unitary structure rigid with the upper end of the discharge tube.

The upper olamp plate is adapted to clasp the top portion of the mattress, and for coaction with the bottom portion of the mattress I provide a bottom clamp plate ll having upturned edge flanges l2 that are clasped in the bottom of the mattress.

The bottom or lower clamp plate is adjustable for attaching the appliance to mattresses of varying heights, or to other suitable supports, and for this purpose the horizontally disposed plate II is equipped with a vertically arranged slide sleeve 13 that is slipped over the lower end of discharge tube and elevated to desired position.

When the appliance has been rigidly adjusted to the mattress, a set screw M, which is threaded in a boss I5 of the tube, is tightened with its inner end impinging against the outer surface of the, discharge tube.

When the services of the appliance are to be dispensed with, the set screw may belopsened, the lower adjustable clamp plate maybe depressed, and the appliance may readily be detached from the bed mattress.

For sanitary purposes the open end of the receptacle is normally closed and may be sealed by the lid 2 and its weight 4, and the weighted lid, under action of gravity securely seats against the open end which is disposed in a plane slanting across the longitudinal axis of the receptacle.

Drainage from the discharge tube made be disposed of in any suitable manner, as by a hose attached thereto, or the tube may discharge into a portable receptacle adapted for this purpose.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A portable urinal for attachment to'a bedside including a horizontally disposed funnel shaped receptacle terminating in a down-turned nozzle, an upright discharge tube depending from the nozzle, an upper clamping member rigid with the lower portion of the receptacle, an adjustable clamping member mounted on the tube, and means for fastening the latter member in adjusted position.

2. A portable urinal for attachment to a bed mattress including an open end receptacle terminating in a down-turned nozzle, an upright discharge tube depending from the nozzle, an upper tacle having a hinged lid, an upright discharge tube depending from the smaller end of the receptacle, an upper clamping plate having down-turned flanges and rigid with the receptacle, an adjustable clamping plate having upturned flanges and mounted on the tube, and

means for fastening the latter plate in adjusted position on the tube.

4. In a portable urinal for attachment to a bedside, the combination with an open-end receptacle terminating at one end in a downwardly extending discharge tube, and means for attachment to a mattress, of a closed lid having an upper hinge joint on the open end of the receptacle and disposed in a slanting plane across the longitudinal axis of the receptacle, and a weight rigid with the inner face of the lid.

5. In a portable urinal for attachment to a bed mattress, the combination with a conical receptacle terminating at one end in a downturned nozzle and having a depending discharge tube, and a clamp plate rigid with the receptacle, of an adjustable clamp plate and a slide sleeve rigid with said plate, a set screw mounted in the sleeve for fastening the adjustable clamp plate to the tube, said receptacle having an open end disposed in a slanting plane across the longitudinal axis of the receptacle, a lid having an upper hinge joint on the open end of the receptacle, and a weight rigid with the inner face of the receptacle.
