4 Claims.
This invention relates to a combined travel baby crib and play pen of the collapsible type. The primary object of this invention is to provide a crib which is inexpensive, light but sturdy, which can be easily adapted to a childs play pen and which can be quickly collapsed into a single compact unit of a size convenient for traveling.`
The improvement of this invention over other collapsible cribs lies in its unique construction wherein the supporting legs are not an integral part of the side or end construction and therefore may be collapsed to permit the bottom of the crib to rest on the floor and in this position still retain the rigidity necessary for a childs play pen.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of a folding crib embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the Aupper portion of the crib showing the legs in the folded position.
Figure 3 is a detail View of a corner of the crib.
Figure 4 is a top View of the crib.
Figure 5 is a sectional view through 5 5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a sectional view through 6 6 of Figure 1. v
Figure 1 is a detail view of the latch construction on the legs and side rails.
In the drawings ID indicates a plywood panel at each end of the crib securely fastened to upper and lower end rails, and I2 respectively, and reinforced along both vertical edges by upright members I3 which are also secured to the upper and lower end rails and I2. On one side of the crib the upper and lower end rails and I2 are pivotally connected to the upper and lower side rails, I4 and I5 respectively, by a metal hinge I6 so as to permit both end guards I8 to fold inwardly ush with the side guard I9. Vertical rungs I1 connect the upper and lower side rails. On the other side of the crib a threaded stud 2U protrudes from the end face of the end rails I l and I2 and is received by a horizontal transverse slot 2| formed in the ends of the companion side rails 22 and 23. Metal safety latches 24 are secured to the outer surface of said side rails 22 and 23 at 25 adjacent and in line with the slots 2| so that they may be snapped downward over the threaded studs 20 protruding through the slots 2|. The latches 24 provide a rigid connection between the side guard 21 and the end guards I8. However as a safety measure studs 20 are provided with wing nuts 26 which lock the latch 24 over the stud 20 and positively prevents any chance of collapse of the bed while in use.
Four legs 29 are pivotally connected to the upper side rails I4 and 22 at 36 adjacent the latches 24. The outer surface of the lower side rails I5 and 23 is provided with a protruding threaded stud 3| at a point directly below the pivotall connection 3Q on the upper side rails I4 and 22. Said stud 3| is received by a horizontal transverse slot in the leg extending from the edge of the leg facing the end of the crib to the center thereof. Each of said studs 3| is provided with a wing nut 33 which when tightened locks the latch 34 over the stud 3| and maintains the leg 29 in an upright position. One leg on each side of the crib is provided with a holding pin 35 protruding from outer surface of said leg and positioned such that it is engaged by the latch 34 on its companion leg when both legs are pivoted upward toward the center of said side guards I9 and 21 in a substantially horizontal position.
The bottom construction of the crib consists of a piece of canvas 36 or other yielding material secured between the bottom of said lower side rails I5 and 23 and reinforcing members 31.
When the crib is used as a play pen the wing nuts 33 retaining the legs upright are loosened and the latches 34 and studs 3| are disengaged. The legs may then be pivoted upward and the safety4 latch 34 engages the holding pins 35 on its companion leg thereby retaining both legs in a somewhat horizontal position. The bottom of the cribthen rests on the oor and a sturdy play pen is provided.
To fold the crib for storage or carrying purposes, the legs are pivoted up as described above and the wing nuts 26 securing the side guard 21 to the end guards I8 are loosened. The companion studs 26 are disengaged by an upward rotation of the latches 24 and the side guard 21 is detached from the end guards I 8 by a slight outward thrust on the end guards. The end guards |8 may then be folded in ush with the side guard I9 and the other side guard 21 is drawn to the folded end guards I8 to make a single compact unit.
Thus it can be seen that by providing legs independent of the body construction of the crib together with the collapsing means described, the
crib can be readily converted into a sturdy play pen or folded into a unit small enough to carry in the ordinary car. The yielding nature of the fabric bottom adds to the convenience of this crib because it does away with the necessity of carrying a bulky mattress whenever transportation of the crib is necessary for vacation or visiting purposes.
