19 Claims.
This invention relates to caps or head coverings and more particularly to beach bathing cap constructions suitable to be used for swimming or other bathing purposes.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my copending application for Bathing Cap, Serial No. 740,583, filed April 10, 1947, and one of the primary objects of ,this invention is to provide improved forms of face and neck sealing bands for use. in connection with the various bathing caps disclosed in said copending application, particularly with respect to the manner of splitting or dividing the face, andneck sealing band and the means for connecting the end portions thereoi together, .toprovide aiace sealing bandportion adapted to extendldown eachsidenoi the face and under the chin of the wearer, and aneck sealin band portion adapted to extend around the neck of the wearer. It is therefore desired to incorporate in this applicationall of the subject inatter "disclosed in my said copending applica- Another primary object of the invention is to provide a bathing cap includinga head covering provided with a fullness to receive and loosely engage certain portions'of the hairof the wearer.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bathing cap which will effectively and efficiently prevent ingress of water to the hair of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a face and neck sealing band structure of elastic material which will conform to the contour of the skin, and which may be attached td a head covering of water-proof material to prevent ingress of water to the hair of the wearer. e
An additional object of the invention is to pro} vide a face and neck sealing band of the aforementioned type in which the band is split or divided, and means are provided for connecting and disconnecting the margins of the split.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bathing cap construction comprising a face and neck sealing band of elastic material and a head covering connected'thereto, said head covering being constructed of a water-proofmaterialv A further object or" the invention is to provide a bathing cap'construction comi irisin'g' a face and neck sealing band of elastic material, and a head covering of water-proof material connected thereto, in which the band is split or divided to provide free end portions and means are provided for connecting such end portions in overlapping relationship. n
A still further object of the inventionis to pro vide a bathing cap construction comprising a face and neck sealing band of elastiomaterial, and a head covering of water-proof material connected thereto, in which the band is split or divided ,to provide free end portions, and adjustablemeans are provided forconnecting such. end portions in overlapping relationship.
A further object of theinvention is toprovide a bathing cap construction comprising face and neck sealin marginal portions of highly elastic material and a head covering having less elasticity than said marginal portions.
An additional object of theinventionis to pro: vide a bathing cap of unitary elastic construction having marginal portions adapted to, extend around the face and neck of the wearer, in which the marginal portions are molded in a constricted manner to insure a tighter fit around said marginal portions than throughout the other portion of said cap.
,A further object of the invention is to provide a bathing cap of unitary construction compris-- ing it highly elastic material throughout" andin-- cluding portionsadapted to extend around the face and neck of the wearer. a

Fig. 10 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line IGHJ of Fig. 9 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line lll I of Fig. 10 looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 12 is a perspective view of a still further modified form of my bathing cap.
Referring to Figs. 1 to of the drawings. in detail, the bathing cap generally indicated by the reference numeral l comprises a relatively"thin face and neck sealing band, generally indicated. by the numeral 2, which is preferably made of a highly elastic, moldable'material suchas rubber.
The face and neck sealing band 2 comprises face sealing band portion 3", andf'a neck sealing band portion 4 The face sealingband portion 3 is preferably of a generally circular, ovaL'or heart shape and is adapted to extend in a continuous manner acrossthe forehead, down each 9 6 of the face, and under the chin of thewearer, and the neck sealing band portion 4 of the 'band 2 is adapted to extendfaround the neck, of the wearer.
The preferred method of making the face and, neck sealing band 2 is to mold the same as a unitary structure, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3. 4
The peripheral length of the generally circular, oval, or heart shaped face band portion 3. and the length of then'e'ck band portion are preferably such that considerable stretching or tensioning of the highly elastic material in the band is maintained when in position on' the "face and neck of the wearer. This; stretching or tensioning is desirable in order to main ain absolutely efiectiveseal and'generally, an'incr'ease in the lengths 'of the bandportions 3 and 4 of approximately 50% provides 'a highly effective seal without interfering with the comfort of the wearer. The value of 50%is given" ae'an illustration, not as a' limitation, since obviously the increase in the said lengths may'vary widely. The specific said increase will depend to some ex tent upon the elasticity of the particular mate rial used, and also, upon the personal likes and. dislikes of the wearer. Further, the specific use of the cap will be a factor, 'e. 'g., shower bathing does not reouire the seal to be as effective as does beach bathing.
The face sealing band portion 3 and the neck sealing band portion are 'each' provided with a substantially circular stiffening and sealing pro .iection or head 5 along the free edge th'ere'of'to aid in providing an effective seal.
The drawings clearly illustrate the manner in which the band 2 is split or divided, and the nor tion 1 of the band passes under the chin, the upper half thereof may be considered to be a' portion of the face band and the lower half thereof may be considered to be a portion of'the' neck band 4. The total width of the portion 1 of the band however, is preferably less than the'combined Widths of the remainer'of the face and neck band portions 3, l.
Preferably, the portions 1 of. the band 2 is made thicker than the other portions thereof to resist orprevent folding due to movement of the chin of the wearer, and at one end portion thereof, the
portion 1 of the band merges into and integrally connects with the band portions 3 and 4 at the juncture 8 thereof at one side of the bathing cap. The other end of the portion 1 0f the band is provided with an extension 9, preferably, but not necessarily, bifurcated, comprising an extension 3' of the face band portion 3 and an extension 4 of the neck band portion 4. The normally free end portion 9 of the band 2 is adapted to overlap a second normally free end portion I!) of the band formed at the juncture'of the band portions 3 and 4 at the opposite side of the bathing cap, with the extensions 3 and 4 overlying the band portions 3 and 4, respectively.
' The end portions 9 and In of the band 2 are provided with. preferably a plurality of spaced snap fastening means I! comprising elements l2 secured 'to extensions 3 and 4 and cooperating elements l3 secured to band portions 3 and 4. The spaced fastening means ll provide means whereby. the band portions may be adjusted to different wearer's of the cap, or, wherebysaid band portions, may be adjusted todifferent degreesf'o f tension by the same wearer.
The face and. neck sealing band, 2- is, suitably secured to a head covering l4 whichis made'cf a water-proof material. The head covering I,4 forms the main body portion of the cap land, as illustrated, is of one-piece construction, although it may be made of several pieces. as will. be later described in connection with the, modifications, if desired, and the pieces secured together inany suitable manner to render the construction waterproof, as by vulcanizing.
The head covering, [4 maybe constructed; of an elastic material having less elasticity than the band 2, maybe substantially non-elastic, or. the degree of. elasticity, of the head covering 4 may equal that of'the face and neck sealing band 2 and thus, if desired, the headcovering [4 may be constructed of the same material as the band 2 and may be integrally connected therewith, thereby providing a cap I of unitary construe tion. Alternatively, the head covering l4 may be constructed of the same elastic material as the band 2 but rendered less elastic than the band by reinforcement, as by being made thickerthan the band 2. Other suitable materials forv the head covering l4 are rubberized silk, nylon, orl other woven fabric material, or rubber havinga smaller degree of elasticity than the band 2. When the latter materials are used, the band 2 is suitably secured to the head covering l4, as by overlapping and vulcanizing.
In placing the cap l on the head, the wearer places the cap on the head in the usual. manner. Fig. 5 illustrates the more or less wrinkled condition of the head covering at. this point before the band is tensioned. Then, grasping, the end, portions 9 and l 0 of the band 2, the wearer stretches or tensions the face and neck sealing band portions 3 and 4, overlaps the end [0 with the end 9, and fastens two or more of the senarable fastening means [2. The'degree of wrinkling of the head covering portion may, of course, be reduced or eliminated by makingthe marginal portion or outer edge only of the face and neck bands of a length less than that of the rest of the band when in unstretched condition, as is well known in the art. Such a construction limits. most, or all, of the stretching to the marginal portion of the band when the cap is fastened in place.
The modified forms of cap illustrated in Figs. 6 to 11 and Fig. 12 differ from the form previously described substantially only with respect to the manner in which the band is split or divided, and in the construction of the head covering in that a fullness is provided therein to receive and loosely engage certain portions of the hair of the wearer.
In these forms of the invention, as before, the bathing caps, generally indicated by reference numerals IBI and 20 I, respectively, comprise a relatively thin face and neck sealing band, generally indicated by the numeral I02, which is preferably made of a highly elastic, moldable material such as rubber.
The face and neck sealing band Hi2 comprises a face sealing band portion !03, and a neck sealing band portion Is each of which is provided with a substantially circular stiffening and sea1- ing projection or bead I85 along the free edge thereof to aid in providing an effective seal.
The band portions I63 and H24 of the band I02 have, as do the band portions 3 and 4 of the band 2, a length, or efiective sealing, length, normally less than that required to surround the face and extend around the neck, respectively, of the wearer; the face sealing band portion I03 is adapted to extend in a continuous manner across the forehead, down each side of the face, and under the chin of the wearer, and the neck sealing band portion 554 of the band I02 is adapted to extend around the neck of the wearer.
The band portion I 02 is split or divided in such a manner, as clearly illustrated, that two separate, preferably thicker, free end portions m5 and I01 pass under the chin of the wearer. The band portion IE5 forms a part of the face sealing band portion I93, is integrally connected thereto at one side of the cap at the juncture I08 of the band portions m3 and I34, and is adapted to overlap the lower portion I 953 of the band portion IE3 at the other side of the cap. The band portion Ill! forms a part of the neck sealing band portion 804, is integrally connected thereto at the side of the cap opposite the juncture I08 at the juncture Hit of the band portions I03 and I04, and is adapted to overlap the forward portion of the band portion adjacent the juncture I68.
The free end portions I36 and Iill of the band I02 are provided with a plurality of spaced snap fastening means III comprising elements H2 secured to the band portions E556 and I0! and cooperating elements II 3 secured to the band portions I03 and I04. The spaced fastening means II I provide adjustability in the tensioning of the band as previously described.
In the form of the invention illustrated, the
band portion I85 overlies the band portion I01 in use, and preferably, but not necessarily, beads I05 are provided at the junctures I83 and II 0 of the band portions I03 and I04. The beads I95 extend from the bead IE5 of the face band portion to the bead I55 of the neck band portion.
Referring now to the bathing cap IilI disclosed in Figs. 6 to 11, the face and neck sealing band I02 is suitably secured to a head covering H4 which is made of a water-proof material. The head covering H4 forms the main body portion. of the cap Idl and, in the form illustrated, is of three piece construction, although more or less pieces may be used, and comprises two side portions or panels lid and a central portion or panel H4" secured together at the seams II '5 (Fig. 11) in any suitable manner to render the construction waterproof, as by vulcanizing.
The head covering H may be constructed of an elastic material having preferably'less elasticity than the band I02, or it may be substantially non-elastic. Thus, for example, the head covering H4 may be made of rubberized silk,
7 nylon, or other Woven fabric material, or rub- I provided with a fullness comprising a plurality of folds, pleats or gathers.
In the form illustrated, the top or forward portion H9 of the panel H4" is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending folds I20, and the rearward or back portion I2I of the.
panel H4" is provided with a plurality of transversely extending folds I22. It will be obvious, of course, that longitudinally extending folds may be substituted for the transverselyextending folds, and vice versa, if desired. It may be here pointed out that when longitudinally extending folds only are provided, the head covering is preferably of one piece construction.
Approximately midway longitudinally of the centralportion or panel IN", a reinforcing band I23 is connected to the seams H1 at its ends as- The band I23 thus connects by stitching I24. and co-acts with the sidev portions or panels H4 to assure proper positioning of the band I02:relative to theface and neck under tension.
The' band I23 may be made of non-elastic material, if desired, but preferably, it is made of a material having relatively low elasticity to render the same adjustable and thus make the 'cap adjustable to heads of different sizes.
- Fig. 6 illustrates the cap I0I in position on the head of the wearer before the band I02 is tensioned. It will be noted that in this position the folds I20 and I22 have not opened appreciably. Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate the cap after the band has been tensioned and the band portions I05 and I01 secured, and it will be noted that in this instance, bulky portions of the hair of the wearer have caused both the folds I20 and I22 to open. This construction obviously adds greatly to the comfort of the wearer, since bulky portions of the hair are not pressed tightly against the head of the wearer, and in addition there is less disarrangement of the hair than with conventional or tight fitting bathing caps.
The further modified form of bathing cap 20I illustrated in Fig. 12 is also provided with a fullness, for the reasons previously pointed out, and comprises a head covering 2 I 4 secured to the face and neck sealing band I02 as previously described. The head covering 2I4 may be made of the same materials as the covering H4, and comprises two side panels 2I4' and a central panel 2I4" secured together as previously described.
.panel 2 I4" is cut outwardly on a bias, is relatively wider than the forward portion, and in addition is relatively long so as to form a fullness or snood 224 adapted to depend below the neck band portion I04 of the band I02.
Obviously, if desired, the cap 20I may be constructed to include folds such as the folds H or H2- at the forward portion 2l9 of the central panel 2H if a reinforcing band such as the band I23 is provided.
It will also be obvious that the head covering H may be used with the band I02, the head coverings H4 or- 214 may be used with the band 2, if desired, and as stated above, any of the several forms of bathing cap disclosed in my copending application serial No. 740,583 may be modified relative to the band or head covering constructions in the manner disclosed herein. Thus, in addition to the modified forms above referred to herein which are disclosed in my said copending application, the band portion 3 or I03 may be omitted across the forehead of the wearer, or the band portions 3' and 4, or I03 and H14 may be made more resilient than the head covering without such difference being defined by a visible band, as when the band is rendered more resilient or elastic than the head covering by compounding or-by blending two different types of material, e. g., by the coagulation dip orsimilarmethods well: known to the rubber industry.
It is to be noted that. all of my bathing caps may be. considered to comprise a head covering of watereproofmaterial having a face receiving aperture and a neck receiving aperture and adapted to completely house the hair and ears of the wearer, in which the neck and face receiving aperturessuch as 15 and Hi, respectively, of Figs. 2- and 3 for examples, are provided marginally thereof with the property of high elasticity.
While the invention is susceptible of various modifications and alternative constructions, I have herein disclosed in detail the pref-erred embodiments, but it is to be understood that I do not therebyintend to limit the invention to the specific forms disclosed, bu-t intend to cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scom of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
My: copendin application Serial No. 740,583,
heroinabove refer-red to is a continuation-in-part of; my application Serial No. 674,170, filed June 4, 1946, noivabandoned,
