21 Claims. 1 This invention relates to improvements in combined ignition and starter switch and lock.
The principal objects of this invention are: First, to provide a novel form of switch and lock structure which is operative to connect and disconnect various electrical circuits in an automobile and to energize the starting circuit of the automobile engine.
Second, to provide a switch for an automobile or the like which is rotatable between a locked position and two unlocked positions in which various combinations of circuits are completed and in which the lock mechanism is movable axially in one of its unlocked positions to energize the starter of the automobile.
Third, to provide an ignition and starter switch and lock in which a single spring is operative to maintain the switch elements under spring pressed loading to prevent rattling of the parts and to assure good electrical contact between the switch elements and to permit axial motion of the lock mechanism for engagement of the starter contacts.
Fourth, to provide a switch having the foregoing characteristics which is adaptable to starter mechanisms having either a live or grounded switch terminal.
Fifth, to provide an ignition and starter switch structure in which the several terminals for connection to the electrical system of the automobile are uniformly spaced giving the most possible room for connection of the wires or cables to the terminals.
Sixth, to provide a combined ignition and starter switch rotatable into two energized positions to energize all the accessories of. the automobile in one position or to energize only a part of the accessories in another position and in which the idle contact in the said other position is remotely located from any other terminal so that the switch will not accidently energize an element of the engine'such as the starter motor.
Seventh, to provide a combined ignition and starter switch and lock with an easily replaceable starter terminal.
Eighth, to provide novel means for easily and securely mounting a switch and lock mechanism on an instrument panel.
Other objects and advantages pertaining to the details of my switch will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and claims.
The drawings, of which there are three sheets, illustrate three forms of my switch embodying different details of construction which may be incorporated in the switch depending upon the desire of the manufacturer.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of one form of switch partially broken away in cross section and with elements thereof further broken away 2 in cross section to illustrate details of construction.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, taken along the plane of the line 2-2 in Fig. 1 and illustrating the switch in one operative position arranged to energize all of the electrical circuits of an automobile.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the switch in a position to energize only a selected portion of the circuits of the automobile.

All forms of the switch consist generally of a housing i having a front barrel section 2 and a rear bell-like portion 3. The barrel portion 2 is arranged to receive lock mechanism consisting of an outer cylinder 4 and an inner cylinder 5 which is rotatable within the outer cylinder when actuated by the proper key 6. The lock mechanism includes a radial pin 1 which is spring pressed outwardly from the outer cylinder 4 into engagement with a notch 8 in the barrel portion of the housing to retain the lock mechanism in the housing. The inner cylinder 5 is provided with a recess 9 into which the inner end of the pin 1 may be pressed for removal of the lock mechanism from the barrel only when the inner cylinder and key are turned to the proper unlocked position of the locked mechanism.
The bell portion 3 of the housing is shouldered at its rear end as at It) to form a seat for the terminal bock H. The terminal block in each form of the switch consists of insulating material preferably molded with the connecter pins 12 3 inserted therein. The terminal block is retained against the shoulder in by bending over the rear edge of the housing as at 13 (see Fig. 1)
The structure thus liar describedis a commercial structure presently available in the automotive field and forms no part of this invention except as it is combined with the novel elements and features to be described presently. It should be understood that suitable interlocking grooves and ribs, not illustrated, are provided on the outer lock cylinder 4 to prevent rotation of that cylinder in the barrel.
Considering now that form of the switch illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, it will be noted that the terminal block l l is provided with four connecter pins equi-angularly and radially disposed on the terminal block. Two of these pins extend through the terminal block to an ignition or coil terminal is and an accessory terminal [5 which is conveniently connectable to the radio and various gauges of the automobile. Another of the pinsextends through the terminal block to a (lfillbiE terminal it which extends radially of the terminal block and which preferably connected through its pin [2 to the battery or the automobile to form a live terminal.
The fourth connecter pin l2 extends into the hole it formed through the terminal block, and secured to a spring finger [8' which projects iorwardiy in the hole'but terminates below'the' lront surface of the terminal block. The hole It has an oiiest portion Iii shown in Figs. I and 6' to receive the finger H3. The pin l2 secured to the finger i8 is held in the hole by the locking nut which clamps a spring clip 25a. to a shoulder on the pin. The clip a is springably and reinoveably engageable' with the tapered sides of the boss which encloses the pin.
Cooperative with the various terminals on the terminal block it is a generally circular contact disk 26 of copper or other conducting material. The disk is provided with a pair of rearwardly pressed dimples 22' located at approximately 90 from each other and at an equal distance from the center of the disk. A third. dimple 23 is diametrically opposed to one of the dimples 22' but is spaced radially farther from the center of the disk than the other two dimples.
The disk is cut away man-arcuate slot 24" be,- tween the opposed. dimples leaving a, rim portion 25 having a forwardly turned lug 26 on its end. The disk is further slotted-radially. at its opposite edges and provided with forwardly turned lugs 21, one of which cooperates with. the lug 26, to provide a driving slot.
The disk 21' is arranged to be rotated within the bell housing by a driving member 18 which.v has a rotatable and axially slid'able engagement within a reduced portion 29 of the housing; The rear end of the driving member 28 is formed of. insulating material and is provided with diametrically opposed rearwar'dly pr'cje'cti'ngfeet 3t engageable with the lugs" 26 and 21 to rotate the contact disk. The forward end of the driving member 28 consistsoil a chi i-shaped metal stamping 5| which defines an aperture 32 in its forward w'a'll arranged to receive the inner end of the inner cylinder 5 of the lock mechanism. The aperture 32 is notchedto receive an arm 33pm"- jecting from the inner lock cylinder" so that, the inner lock cylinder will rotate; the driving member.
A single coil spring 34" is interposed" between the contact disk 21 an'dthe' driving" member 2? and serves to constantly urge the disk against the terminal block I l and to urge the driving member and lock mechanism forwardly so that there is no rattling. inthe lock mechanism.
With particular attention to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be noted that the contact disk can be rotated from an intermediate locked position as indicated by the dotted positions of the dimples at 35, into the position shown in Fig. 2 where the equally spaced dimples 22 engage the coil terminal 14 and the accessory terminal 55 and where the radially spaced dimple 23 engages the outer portion of the doubleterminal to for energizing both the ignition-coil and accessories of the automobile through the disk. In this position the arcuate slot 25 in the contact disk uncovers the sprin finger it on the starterterminall,
The contact disk. is rotatable in an opposite direction to the position shown in Fig. 3 in which one of the equally spaced dimples 22' will engage the inner portionor the live terminal lie and the other dimple 22' will engage the accessory ten minal [5. The radially spaced dimple 23" will assume a position spaced. outwardly from the starter terminal [8' where it can make no elec- 5 trical contacta'nd the arcuate slot" 215 will overlie the ignition terminal I'll so that the ignition coil is de energized. In this" position accessories or the automobile such as the radio may be oper'ated without le'aving'the' engine running and the ignition energized.
The starting function of the switch is accomplished by providing a rearwardly extending leaflik'e contact finger at on the metal cap portion 31 of the driving member. This finger 35 is positioned equi-angularly'betwe'en theadj'acent dimpies on" the contact disk so that in the running position or the switch, the finger 36' will; overlie the recess [7 in the terminal block and will at all times be positioned over the arcuate slot Ed in the contact disk; The" forward surface of the terminal block H is provided with the diametrically opposed recesses 37 which are arranged to align with the feet 38 on the driving member when the switch isin running: position. It is thus possible to press hiwardly on the driving; member against the compression of the spring 3E and engage" the ringer 36 with the spring terminal la. The finger 36 being grounded through the cap member" 31 and lock mechanism, will complete a circuit which may be aranged to energize the starter motor so long as the driving member is depressed.
In order to provide for axial motion of the driving memberthe barrel portion 2 of the housing is altered from the previously. known form of housing to provide a longitudinally extending slot 38* (see Fig. l)" in which the locking pin 7 of' the'lock mechanism is sli'da'ble. The outer end of the slot 3"8' stillp'erforms the locking function of the slot 8 to prevent removal of the lock mechanism but the extended inner portion of the slot 38 permits the inward motion of" the lock mechanism and key, as s'hown by the dotted lines} in Fig". 1*, to engage the starter terminal.
A central bolt 39 may be mounted in the terminal block and extend into the housing toform a guide for the driving member 28.
In the modified form of switch illustrated in Figs; 6' and T, the terminal block and terminals are the same as in the first form ofthe switch except that the starter terminal I8- is adapted to be connected to the one side of a starter cir-' cuit having its other side dead or grounded. The starting terminal 36a, instead'of being grounded through the lock mechanism, is carried on a disk 49 mounted on a shoulder on the rear face of the driving member 28a. The disk 40 is electrically connected through the spring 34 to the contact disk Zia so that the starting finger 35a will be energized at all times when the contact disk is energized.
The contact disk 211a is substantially the same as the first form of disk 2| except that the slot 24a need not be as wide as the corresponding slot in disk 2i since there is no necessity for maintaining clearance between the finger and the disk when both elements are energized.
The mechanism for accommodating axial motion of the lock mechanism is slightly different in this latter form of switch. Instead of providing the slot 38 as in the first form of the housing, the rear edge of the locking notch 8 is merely internally and rearwardly beveled as at 38a. in Fig. 7. Thus, when the key 6 is turned to align the recess ii with the inner end of the pin 7, the entire lock mechanism may be pressed axially inwardly to actuate the starter switch. The outer end or" the pin i will engage the beveled surface 380. and be forced into the recess Q. Should the key and inner lock cylinder be in improper position, no amount of pushing can depress the pin l and permit axial motion of the lock mecanism.
The form of switch illustrated in Figs. 8 to 11 difiers from the two previously described forms of mechanism in the switching structure located in the bell portion of the housing. The lock mechanism including the inner and outer lock cylinders 4 and 5 may include either form of mechanism for permitting longitudinal movement or" the look as described in the first two forms of the structure. 7
In this third form of lock, the terminal block iii; is provided with three equi-angularly and radially spaced connecter pins 41, 42 and 43. The inner or forward ends of the connecter pins are provided with terminals 44 opening to the forward face of the terminal block and one of the terminals ii is provided with a connected radially spaced terminal 45. The guide bolt 26 through the center of the terminal block in this instance forms the fourth connecter pin and is adapted to have a conductor from the starter circuit connected thereto.
The contact disk 2% is provided with two equiangularly spaced rearwardly projecting dimples 22b which are arranged to simultaneously engage any two of the terminals 61, 42 and 13. The disk 2th is further provided with a radially spaced dimple 23b arranged to engage the spaced terminal 35 in one angularly adjusted position of the contact disk. With the double terminal 4|, 55 connected to the battery and the terminals 2 and it connected respectively to the ignition circuit and to the accessory circuit of a vehicle, the switch can be operated between the two operating positions as in the first two forms of the switch to simultaneously energize the ignition circuit and accessories or to energize only the accessories.
The disk is provided with forwardly turned lugs 2th on its opposite edges arranged to reeive the rearwardly projecting feet 3% on the driving member 281) so that the disk can be rotated from the driving member and lock mechanism. The rear face of the driving member 28%) is recessed as at ll and receives a two piece conical starter contact 48 which is retained around the forward end of the guide bolt and starter pin 46 by the coil spring 34. The starter contact is thus continually in electrical contact with the starter pin 46.
The rear end of the spring 34 bears against the contact disk 21b but is insulated therefrom by an annular insulating gasket 49 so that the starter contact 58 and connecter pin 43 normally receive no current from the live terminal 4 l. The center or" the contact disk 2) defines an aperture 50 which passes the inner end of the guide pin. Three springable fingers 5! are pressed forwardly from the edges of the aperture 58 and provided with the radially inwardly projecting dimples 52. The fingers SI and dimples 52 are thus arranged to engage the tapered conical surface or" the starter contact 48 when the starter contact is moved rearwardly by axial motion of the lock mechanism and driving member 2812.
From the foregoing description it should be apparent that the lock mechanism can be r0- tated to two operating positions, positioned one on each side or" a locked position. The contact disk wili operate as previously described to energize both the ignition circuit and accessory circuit in one position or to energize only the accessories in the other operating position. In the first operating position the lock mechanism, driving member and starter contact can be moved rearwardly to energize the starter pin 45 through the contact piate 2 spring fingers 5i and starter contact Longitudinal movement of the driving member is accommodated in the one operating position of the lock mechanism by movement of t e feet rearwardly between the lugs 2717 as in the s nd form of the switch and lock mechanism. Detent recesses 5:3 (see Fig. 9) are ro'ided in the face of the block lib to locate the dimples 22 in the ofi position oi the switch.
Figs. 1, 6, '"i, and 12 iliustrate a preferred method of mounting the switch. In these two forms or" the switch the forward end of the barrel 2 is provided with two diametrically opposed forwardly projecting lugs 5 The sides of the lugs are undercut or tapered as at and the outer surface of the lugs is grooved as at 56. The instrument panel 5? to which the lock is to be attached is pro ided with an aperture 58 large enough to pass the outer cylinder 4 of the lock and notched at 59 at opposite edges to pass the lugs 5a. A dished or bent spring washer 6B is fitted around the lugs 54 and in the grooves 56 behind the instrument panel 5? and an annular escutcheon or retaining ring iii is positioned on the front surface of the instrument panel and provided with diametrically opposed notches 62 for receiving the forward ends or the lugs 54 which project forwardly of the instrument panel.
To mount the switch and lock, the lock cylinder is removed from the barrel and the lock housing and spring washer carried thereby are pressed against the back of the instrument panel to flatten the spring washer and project the lugs 54 through the notches in the instrument panel. The escutcheon ring 6i is then slid tranverseiy across the apertur in the instrument panel to engage the lugs 5 and hold the lock housing on the instrument panel. The lock cylinder can then be inserted through the esoutcheon ring to complete the lock assembiy. Note that the inner edge of the escutcheon is notched at (see Fig. 12) to pass the retaining pin 7 on the lock cylinder.

A combined starter and ignition switch and lock comprising, a housing having a forward barrel portion and a rear bell-like portion, lock mechanism including an outer cylinder and an inner cylinder positioned in said barrel portion, said outer cylinder having a radially extending spring pressed pin engageable with a notch in said barrel portion to prevent removal of said lock mechanism, said barrel portion defining a longitudinal recess permitting inward motion of said pin and lock mechanism, a terminal block of insulating material secured in the rear of said bell portion and having a plurality of ccnnecter pins secured therein, terminal buttons connected to the inner ends of part of said pins and opening to the forward face of said terminal block, a starter terminal connected to another of said pins and recessed into the forward face of said block, a contact plate having rearwardly extending projections thereon simultaneously engageable with said buttons in one angular position of said plate, spaced lugs turned forwardly from said plate, said plate defining an aperture uncovering said starter terminal in said one position of said plate, a driving member including a metal portion drivingly connected with said lock mechanism and an insulating portion having rearwardly extending feet of insulating material received between said lugs on said plate to rotate said plate, a spring positioned between said plate and the insulating portion of said driving member, and a finger-like contact extending from the metal portion of said driving member and adapted to be moved rearwardly through said aperture into engagement with said starter terminal by longitudinal movement of said lock mechanism and driving member in one angularly adjusted position of said lock mechanism and plate, the forward face of said block being recessed to receive said feet in said one angularly adjusted position of said lock mechanism upon axial motion of said driving member.

A combined starter and ignition switch and lock comprising, a housing having a forward barrel portion and a rear bell-like portion, lock mechanism including an outer cylinder and an inner cylinder positioned in said barrel portion, a terminal block of insulating material secured in the rear of said bell portion and having a plurality of conn cter pins secured therein, terminal buttons connected to the inner ends of part of said pins and opening to the forward face of said terminal block, a starter terminal connected to another of said pins and recessed into the forward face of said block, a contact plate having rearwardly extending projections thereon simultaneously engageable with said buttons in one angular position of said plate, said plate defining an eccentrically located aperture uncovering said starter terminal in said one position of said plate, a driving member including an insulating portion and drivingly connected with said lock mechanism and said plate, a spring positioned between said plate and said driving memher, and a finger-like contact extending from said driving member and adapted to be moved rearwardly through said aperture into engagement with said starter terminal by longitudinal movement of said lock mechanism and driving member in one angularly adjusted position of said. lock mechanism and plate.
7. In combination with an ignition and starter switch and lock having lock mechanism rotatable between an off position and two operating positions, said mechanism being movable axially in one only of said operating positions, a terminal block of insulating material having four equiangularly spaced connecter pins extending from the rear thereof, a pair of terminal buttons secured to two of said pins and opening to the front of said block, a double terminal button secured to another of said pins and having one part thereof spaced radially outwardly from an arc through said other buttons, a starter terminal secured to the fourth of said pins, a contact disk having a pair of dimples thereon arranged to engage said pair of buttons, a third dimple on said disk arranged to engage said spaced portion of said third button when said pair of buttons and a pair of dimples are engaged, said disk defining an opening uncovering said starter terminal in one position of said disk, driving means connecting said disk to said lock mechanism for rotation therewith, spring means compressed between said disk and said driving means, and a starter contact carried by said driving means and movable axially with said driving means and lock mechanism into engagement with said starter terminal in one of said operating positions of said lock mechanism.

In combination with an ignition and starter switch and lock having lock mechanism rotatable between an off position and two operating positions, said mechanism being movable axially in one of said operating positions, a terminal block of insulating material having a minimum of four equi-angularly spaced connector pins extending from the rear thereof, terminal buttons secured to at least three of said pins and opening to the front of said block, a starter terminal secured to another of said pins, a contact disk having projections thereon arranged to engage two of said buttons in one of the operating positions of said disk and to engage all of said buttons in the other operating position of said disk, said disk defining an opening uncovering said starter terminal in said other operating position of said disk, driving means connecting said disk to said lock mechanism for rotation therewith, spring means compressed between said disk and said driving means, and a starter contact carried by said driving means and movable axially with said driving means and lock mechanism into engagement with said starter terminal in said other operating position of said lock mechanism, said pin with the starter terminal secured thereto being removaly secured to said terminal block by a spring clip.

In combination with an ignition and starter switch and lock having lock mechanism rotatable between an off position and two operating positions, said mechanism being movable axially in one of said operating positions, a terminal block of insulating material having a minimum of four spaced connector pins extending from the rear thereof, terminal buttons secured to at least three of said pins and opening to the front of said block, a starter terminal secured to another of said pins, a contact member having projections thereon arranged to engage two of said buttons in one of the operating positions of said member and to engage all of said buttons in the other operating position of said member, said member defining an opening uncovering said starter terminal in said other operating position of said member, driving means connecting said member to said lock mechanism for rotation therewith, and a starter contact carried by said "-11 .zdriving means and movable axially with said driving means and lock mechanism to move through said opening into engagement with said starter terminal in said other operating position of said'lock mechanism.
10.'In a combined ignition and starter switch and lock including ignition switch mechanism rotatable between an operating position and a locked position, key operated lock mechanism for rotating said ignition switch mechanism, a housing enclosing said switch and lock mechanisms, a pin carried'by said lock mechanism and .spring "pressed outwardly therefrom into on- :gagement with said housing to prevent removal of said lock mechanism, said housing defining arecess permitting inward axial motion of said pin and :lock mechanism, a starter terminal fixed-axially with respect to said housing, means iblocking'axial movement of said lock mechanism in a-l-l but @the operating rotated position thereof, and a starter contact carried by said lock mechanism and movable axially therewith in the operating position of said switch mechanism to slidably complete a. starter circuit.
11. A combined ignition and starter switch and lock comprising, a housing, lock mechanism rotatable in said housing between a locked and two :unlooked positions, a terminal block in said housing having a plurality of terminals thereon, -a-contact-disk having Contact portions selectively engageable with said terminals, a driving member forrotating said contact disk with said lock mechanism, a starter contact having a flanged portion mounted against said driving member, a spring compressed between I said contact disk and :said flanged portion and electrically comiecting the same, a starter terminal on said block, said driving member andstarter contact being mov- -2ab1e axially against said spring t engage said :starter contact with said starter terminal, .a radially extending spring pressed pin carried by said lock mechanism and engageable with said housing to prevent removal of said lock mechanism, and lock mechanism defining a recess adapted to permit depression of said pin in one unlocked position of said lock mechanism, and 'a'cam surface onsaid housing engageable with asid pin to depress said pin on axially inward motion of said lock mechanism.

A combined ignition and starterswitoh and lock comprising, a housing, lock mechanism rotatable in said 'housingr between a locked and two unlocked positions, a terminal block carried by said housing having a plurality of terminals thereon open to the interior of said housing, a contact member having contact portions selectively engageable with said terminals by rotation of said contact member, a driving member for rotating said contact member with said lock mechanism, a starter contact having a flanged portion mounted against said driving member, a spring compressed between said contact member and said flanged portion and electrically connecting the samepa starter terminal on said block, said :lock mechanism, driving member and starter contact being movable axially against :said spring to slidabiy engage said starter .contact'with said starter terminal, and means blocking axial movement of said lock mechanism, :driving member and starter contact in all ro tailed positions of said lock mechanism except one of its unlocked positions. a I V 13. A combined ignition and, starter switch and dock comprising, a housing, lock mechanism rotatable in said housing between .a locked and 12 ,two unlocked gpositions, switch mechanism in said housing rotatable with said lock mechanism .to two operating positions, a starter terminal associated with said switch mechanism, a starter contact carried by said lock mechanism, said starter contact being movable axially to engage said starter terminal, a radially extending spring pressed pin carried by said lock mechanism and *engageable with said housing to prevent removal of said lock mechanism, said lock mechanism defining a recess adapted to permit depression of said pin in-one position of said lock mechanism, and a cam surface on said housing engageable with said pin to depress said pin on axially in?- ward motion of said lock mechanism.

In a combined ignition and starter switch and lock including switch mechanism rotatable between an operating position and a locked position, key operated lockmechanism for actuating said switch mechanism, a housing enclosing said switch andlock mechanism, a pin carried by said lock mechanism and springpressed outwardly therefrom into engagement with said,
housing to prevent removal of said lock mechanism, said lock mechanism defining a .recess permitting inward radial motion of said pin in one :position of said lock mechanism, :said housing having a cam surface engageable with said pin to depress said pin upon axial motion of said lock mechanism, and a starter contact carried by said lock mechanism and movable axially therewith the operating position of said switch imechanism to complete a starter circuit.

A combined ignition and starter switch and lock comprising, a housing, lock mechanism in said housing rotatable between two operating positions and one locked position, said lockgmechanism being "movable axially in said housing when angularly rotated into one of said operating positions, means blocking axial motion of said lock mechanism in all rotated positions thereof except said one operating position, a terminal block having a live terminal, an ignition terminal, an accessory terminal, and a starter terminal mounted thereon, a contact disk selectively engage-able 'by rotation with said ignition, accessory and live terminals and with said accessor y and live terminals to the exclusion of said ignition terminal, a driving member connecting said disk and said lock mechanism, a starter contact carried by said driving member and movable axially through said disk into sliding contact 13 with said starter terminal, and spring means to return said starter contact.

A combined ignition and starter switch and lock comprising a housing, lock mechanism in said housing rotatable between two operating positions and one locked position, a terminal block having a live terminal, an ignition terminal, an accessory terminal, and a starter termimounted thereon, a contact member selectively en 'eable by rotation with said ignition, accessory and live terminals and with said accesscry and live terminals to the exclusion of said ignition terminal, driving member connecting said contact member and said lock mechanism, said lock mechanism and driving member being movable axia ly of said housing in one of said oper' ng po ions of said lock mechanism, means blocking axial movement of said lock mechanism in all rotated positions thereof except said one operating position, and a starter contact carried by said driving member and movable axially through said contact member into contact with said starter terminal.

A combined ignition and starter switch and lock comprising, a housing, lock mechanism positioned in said housing and rotatable to an operating position on each side of a locked position, a terminal block of insulating material positioned in said housing, three equiangularly and radially spaced contact pins secured in said block, terminals secured to the inner ends of said pins and equally spaced radially from a center on said block, a radially outwardly spaced terminal connected to one of said terminals, a guide bolt constituting a, starter pin positioned in said block between said other pins and projecting forwardly from said block, a driving member rotatably connected to said l ck mechanism and slidable longitudinally in said housing, contact disk having three ecui-angiularly spaced, rearwardly projecting dimples engageable with said terminals, one of said dimples being radially spaced to contact said radially spaced terminal, means on said driving m engageable with said disk to rotate said c a two piece starter contact received in a recess in the back of said driving member and having a rearwardly converging conical surface, a spring compressed between said disk and starter contact to urge said starter contact and said starter contact from electrical contact with disk through said spring, said disk defining a central aperture passing said guide bolt, and sprihg able fingers extending forwardly from the s of said aperture and having opposed contac .ng surfaces adapted to engage said starter contact upon longitudinal movement of said starter contact.

A combined ignition and starter switch and lock comprising, a housing, lock mechanism posi tioned in said housing and rotatable to an operating position on each side of a locked position, a term nal block of insulating material positioned said housing, three equi-ang ularly .ontact pins secured in said block, terminals secured to the inner ends of said pins and open to the front of said block, a starter pin positioned in said block between said other pins and projecting forwardly from said block, a driving member rotatably connected to said lock mechanism and slideable along the forward end of said starter pin, a contact disk having rearwardly projecting dimples engageable with said ng member forwardly, means insulating terminals, means on said driving member engageable with said disk to rotate said disk, a two piece starter contact embracing said starter pin and having a rearwardly converging conical surface, a spring compressed between said disk and starter contact to urge said starter contact and driving member forwardly, and means insulating said starter contact from electrical contact with said disk through said spring, said disk defining a central aperture passing said starter pin, portions of the edges of said aperture being adapted to en age said starter contact upon longitudinal movement of said starter contact.

A combined ignition and starter switch and lock comprising, a housing, lock mechanism in said housing rotatable between two operating positions and one locked position, a terminal block having live terminal, an ignition terminal, and an accessory terminal mounted thereon in angularly spaced relation, 3, starter terminal mounted in the center of the other of said terminals, a contact disk selectively engageable with said ignition, accessory and live terminals and with said ccessory and live terminals to the exclusion of said ignition terminal, a driving member for rotating said disk from said lock mechanism, said driving member being movable axially of said housing in one of said operating positions of said lock mechanism, means blocking axial movement of said driving member in all rotated positions thereof except said one oper ating position, a starter contact carried by said driving member and electrically engaged with said starter terminal, spring means urging said starter contact and driving member away from said contact disk, and yieldable fingers turned from said disk and forming terminals engageable with said starter contact upon axial motion of said starter contact and driving member.

A combined ignition and starter switch and lock comprising a housing, lock mechanism in said housing rotatable between two operating positions and one locked position, a terminal block having a live terminal, an ignition terminal, :an accessory terminal, and a starter terminal mounted thereon, a contact member selectively engageable with said ignition, accessory and live terminals and with said accessory and live terminals to the exclusion of said ignition terminal, a driving member for rotating said contact member from said lock mechanism, said driving member being movable axially of said housing in one of said operating positions of said lock mechanism, means blocking axial movement of said driving member in all rotated positions thereof except said one operating position, a starter contact movable with said driving member to electrically connect said starter terminal and said contact member, nd spring means between said contaot member and driving member urging said starter contact and driving members away from said terminal block.
