Patented Aug. 15, 1950 COMBINED TRANSFORMER AND REPEATING CIRCUIT BREAKER 7 Chester W. Brow Milwaukee, Wis., assignor to MoGi-aw Electric Company, a corporation of Delaware Application September 5, 1947, Serial No. 772,262
This invention relates to a combined transformer and repeating circuit breaker.
Objects of this invention are to provide a combined transformer and repeating circuit breaker connected in the primary circuit of the transformer with both the transformer and circuit breaker in the same housing and with the transformer and the major part of the circuit breaker immersed in oil, so that the circuit breaker will respond to the temperature of the oil which, in turn, corresponds to the temperature of the transformer, the circuit breaker being arranged to lock out when the temperature reaches a predetermined point.
Further objects are to provide a transformer and a repeating circuit breaker housed in the same housing with the connection between the circuit breaker and the transformer located on the outside of the housing and with the circuit breaker supported from the cover of the housing so that the circuit breaker may be easily disconnected from the transformer exteriorly of the housing or tank and lifted with the cover from the tank.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the combined transformer and repeating circuit breaker.
Figure 2 is a top view with parts cut away and parts in section.
Figure 3 is a side elevation.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a transformer has been indicated by the reference character I. This transformer is mounted on the bottom 2 of a tank 3. The tank is provided with a removable cover 4 held in place in any suitable manner, as by means of the clamps indicated generally at 5. A repeating circuit breaker indicated generally by the reference character E is supended from the cover 4 by means of a plurality of insulating rods 1 and is provided with stationary and movable contacts 8 and 9 housed within an auxiliary tank or container Ill. The circuit breaker may be of any suitable type provided it has the housed stationary and movable contacts and provided it has a thermal release as indicated by the reference character ll, so that the circuit breaker will be automatically locked open whenever the 011 within the tank 3 arrives at a predetermined temperature, It is to be noted that the thermal release member II is mounted below the oil level indicated by the dotted lines I2 and is thus responsive to the temperature of the oil and consequently it pro- 1 claim; ('01. 175-361) tects against overheating of the transformer I. The circuit breaker has its major portions mounted below the oil level l2 and the oil within the auxiliary tank [0 of the circuit breaker is separated oif from the oil in the tank 3, so that although the repeating circuit breaker may operate a number of times there will be no contamination of the oil within the tank 3.
It is to be understood that the circuit breakei is a repeating circuit breaker which locks out after a predetermined number of closely successive operations and which resets itself for a lesser number of circuit interrupting operations. It is also arranged to be manually tripped by means of the handle l3 located in a small housing 14 formed integrally with the cover 4 and open at its lower side. This handle is also effective to reset the circuit breaker in any well known manner.
The connections for the transformer and circuit breaker have been broken away in Figure 1. In Figure 3, it will be seen that the tank is provided with a pair of primary bushings l5 and that the transformer is provided with terminals l6 on its primary side. The secondary terminals have not been shown. The circuit breaker is provided with a pair of upstanding bushings I! carried by the cover 4 and is provided with terminals l8, one of which is connected to the line 19 and the other of which is connected by means of a removable conductor 20 with one terminal 16 of the transformer. The other transformer terminal is connected to the line 2|.
It is apparent that it is a simple matter to remove the circuit breaker for inspection or repair. All that is necessary is to detach the removable conductor 20, release the cover 4, and lift the cover and circuit breaker directly from the tank 3. Obviously, there is no disturbance of the transformer during this process. After the circuit breaker has been serviced or inspected as required, the cover 4 is replaced and the conductor 20 is again connected to the circuit breaker and the transformer. It is to be noted that this conductor 20 is located externally of the tank and the cover and it is, therefore, a very simple matter to attach or detach it.
It will be seen that this invention provides a combined repeating circuit breaker and transformer housed in the same housing and with the circuit breaker located on the primary side of the transformer and with the connections located on the outside of the housing and cover, thus permitting ready removal of the cover and circuit breaker. Further it will be seen that the 3 circuit breaker responds to the temperature of the oil and consequently to the temperature of the transformer so that it will be locked out if the transformer is continuously overloaded and thus will protect the transformer.
Although this invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting, as the invention may be variously embodied and is to be interpreted as claimed.
I claim:
In a device of the class described, a housing adapted to contain oil and having a removable cover, a transformer mounted within said housing and having primary terminals supported by said housing, a circuit breaker supported from said cover and located within said housing and having terminals carried by said cover, and a removable conductor located externally of said housing and connecting one terminal of said circuit breaker with one terminal of said transformer, the other terminal of said circuit breaker and the other terminal of said transformer being arranged for connection to a power line.
