BARTON E. KINGMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LABEL-BAND FOR DRY-GOODS PACKAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,894,dated January 3, 1882.
Application filed October 13, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom ti may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTON E. KINGMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Label-Band for Dry-Goods'Paokages, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to make a label-band for dry-goods packages which will permit a more satisfactory examination of the pattern and quality of the goods than a labelband made in the usual wayyand this object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figures 1, 2, and 3 are views of a roll of dry-goods having near one end an ordinary label-band and near the opposite end one of my improved label-bands, and Fig. 4 a view showing the shape of the band before it is applied to the goods.
It is well known to dry-goods salesmen that fabrics having check patterns can be shown to the best advantage when the eye rests upon a line at an angle to the checks composing the pattern, a better idea of the character of the pattern seeming to be conveyed under these circumstances than when the entire pattern is exposed, or when the view of the pattern is obstructed on a line parallel with the checks.
I- utilize the label-band with which a package of dry-goods is usually furnished as a means of providing the desired diagonal sightline, the band a being out to the shape shown in Fig. 4.that is, so as to present three portions, 1), b, and b occupying certain angles in respect to each other, as shown, so that when the band is applied to the package of goods, as in Fig 1, 2, and 3, it will cross the said package diagonally.
Another advantageof the diagonal band is that it permits the turning down of the corner of the piece of goods to a greater extent than the usual straight band, (I, thus permitting the exposure of more of the fabric than usual, and facilitating the thorough examination of the piece of goods, the advantages of the band in this respect not being limited to goods of a check pattern. 1
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a package of dry goods, a label-band, a, crossing the package diagonally, as set forth.
2. A label-band, a, for dry-goods packages, said band having the three inclined portions 1), b, and b as shown, and adapted to cross the package diagonally, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BARTON E. KINGMAN.
