PAPERMATCH HOLDER Filed March 20, 1947 Inventor Kenneth R. Hagen WWW eys Patented Aug. 15, 1950 PAPER MATCH HOLDER KennethR. Hagen, Paris, 111., assignor to U. 0. Colson Company, Paris, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application March 20, 1947, Serial No. 735,877
2 Claims. (Cl. 20633 This invention appertains to novel means for retaining conventional book matches in a convenient and safe manner.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved receptacle means for retaining matches therein.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved closure means, partially covering an open face of said. receptacle means.
A further object of this invention is to provide improved guide means on said closure means and said receptacle means for directing the travel of said closure means.
A still further object of this invention is to provide limiting means on said receptacle means for cooperation with the said closure means in actuation thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide a second locking means on said closure means for holding the same in a certain predetermined fixed relation, relative to the said receptacle means.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a light, inexpensive and durable device of the nature described which is eflicient in operation and which further, is characterized by safety features in lighting matches contained therein.
Other objects and features of novelty shall become apparent to those skilled in the art, in following the description of the preferred embodiment of the present invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the preferred form of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the invention disclosed in Figure 1 showing a mode of operation thereof;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention disclosed in Figure l, and taken substantially on the line 3-3 thereof and in the direction of the arrows with a match book placed therein;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 4'4 of Figure 1 and in the direction of the arrows; and,
Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective, fragmentary detail of construction showing the preferred form of limiting means forming part of the present invention.
Referring now in detail to the illustrated preferred embodiment of the present invention, like reference characters are used throughout to indicate similar elements thereof. Not infrequently, an entire book of matches ignites inadvertently due to flying sparks resulting in the ignition of a singlev match thereof. As an ancillary feature of this invention, provision has been made for obviating all possibilities of this situation. A further purpose of the invention is to provide an extremely attractive and. efiicient means. for retaining book matches. The preferred material of construction is commercial plastic; however, it is apparent that other materials might be utilized such as light, resilient metal; wood or the like;
Taking now Figure 1,. there is disclosed a receptacle in having side walls l2, a base l4 perpendicular to said side walls, a front Hi also perpendicular to said side walls and a top 18 angularly inclined relative to the base [4. It is immediately apparent that one face of the receptacle formed by the above described construction is left open. The side walls l2 are provided with flange members 20 and protuberances or lugs 22 at a selected portion along the length thereof.
A closure means is provided on the open face of the said receptacle. This closure means is a substantially flat plate 24 having depending flanges 26 integral therewith. Longitudinal right angular extensions 28 are secured to said depending flanges 26 and are slidably engageable with the guide means or rails 20. Lugs 30 are provided as extensions of the said extension 28 and are also slidably received in engagement with the said guide means 20. It is noted from an inspection of Figure 2 that the side walls l2 increase in thickness at selected terminal portions thereof and this increase in size, designated by the numeral 32 forms a shoulder for limiting the travel of the said closure means 24. In this limiting operation, the lugs 30 engage the said shoulder thereby preventing any undesirable motion of the said closure means. It may now be stated that the said closure means is restricted to a certain predetermined travel between the shoulders 32 and lugs 22. Further, the closure means is of such dimensions that it only partially covers the face of the said receptacle [0. Accordingly, when the said closure means is in position as viewed in Figure 1, it is impossible to remove book matches from the said receptacle. When the closure means is moved to a position shown in Figure 2, it is impossible to light or strike removed matches on the usually supplied abrading surface of the conventional book match cover.
A transverse rod 36 is supplied across the open face of the said receptacle ll]. As stated hereinabove the preferred material of construction is plastic, and accordingly, to aid in manufacture, the said bar 32 may be removed from the back portion or base l4 of the said receptacle. A detent 38 is provided in said closure means for selective engagement with the said bar 36. It is quite apparent that the bar 36 assists in retaining the book match cover within the receptacle as well as provides a complemental looking means engageable with the detent 38. This last mentioned locking means is provided for holding the closure means 24 in the usual or desired position that is, covering the igniting portion of the matches. In actuation ofthe said closure means, the finger recess 42 may be engaged by a selected finger and the cover or closure means may slide to the position as disclosed in Figure 2, the notch 44 is provided in the end member 16.
There has been described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of the present invention. However, it is apparent that various changes may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed as novel and improved is as follows:
1. In a container for book matches, a receptacle having an open face and sides, flanges integral with the upper edges of said sides, protuberances integral with said sides and cooperating with said flanges, a closure plate slidably received on the open face of said receptacle and partially covering said open face, rails depending from opposed edges of said plate, protuberances at one end of said rails engaging said first-mentioned protuberances to limit the sliding travel of said plate, stops on said receptacle sides adjacent said flanges adapted to be engaged by said protuberances on said rails to limit the travel of said plate, a bar extending transversely of said receptacle and in said open face adapted to retain matches within the receptacle, and a locking protuberance on the interior surface of said plate engaging said bar to form a latch and overriding said bar in sliding the plate on the receptacle.
2. The combination of claim 1 and a recess in said receptacle accommodating said locking protuberance in the passage thereof during the sliding actuation of said plate.
