1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a boat propelling mechanism and particularly to a propelling mechanism of the manually operated type.
An important object of the invention is to provide a propelling unit which may be readily and easily clamped at the stern beam of a boat, the propelling unit embodying a propeller and gearing for operating the propeller, the gearing being manually operable by means of a crank handle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be used in steering the boat, means being provided for setting the unit at various angular positions with respect to the stern of the boat, so that the propelling force will act to direct the course of the boat propelled.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional .view through a propelling unit, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the propelling unit comprises a body portion including a gear casing 5 which is elongated and provided with a bearing at the lower end thereof in which the propeller shaft 6 is mounted, the propeller shaft 6 supporting the propeller blades 1.
Mounted within bearings at the upper end of the gear casing 5, is a shaft 8 on which the sprocket 9 is secured, the sprocket 9 transmitting movement to the propeller shaft 6 through the chain l and the sprocket II which is keyed to the shaft 6.
The reference character l2 indicates a sprocket which is also secured to shaft 8, and this sprocket is rotated by means of the chain l3 that also operates over the sprocket l4 secured to the power shaft [5.
The power shaft l extends beyond one wall of the casing 5 where it is provided with means to permit the crank handle 16 to be secured thereto, the crank handle being of a length to permit the necessary leverage for the operation of the power shaft IS.
The reference character I! indicates a bracket which is substantially wide and is provided with clamps 18 that fit over the stern beam I9 of the 1 9% with which the device is R 434,
The bracket includes a tubular bearing 20 in which the pivot pin 2| operates, the pivot pin 2| being provided with an extension 22 that carries the latch 23, which latch is adapted to swing into a notch 24 of the segment 25 to hold the body portion or gear casing at a predetermined angle with respect to the stern of the boat to direct the boat in a preferred direction.
The clamps include pressure screws 26 whereby the clamps it may be securely held in position but may be readily disconnected from the boat when desired.
To further insure against slipping of the bracket 25 with respect to the boat, teeth 21 are provided on the inner edge of the bracket, which teeth bite into the stern beam of the boat.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a manually operable propelling mechanism for boats wherein a propeller is operated by means of a hand crank.
What is claimed is:
A manually operable boat propelling mechanism, comprising a gear casing, a propeller shaft and propeller mounted at the lower end of the gear casing, gearing within the gear casing for rotating the propeller shaft and the propeller,
a bracket adapted to be secured to the stern beam of a boat, a horizontal segment having a curved forward edge formed with notches and forming a part of the bracket, a vertical tubular bearing formed integral with the bracket, a pivot pin secured to the gear casing operating in the tubular bearing, a horizontal extension on the upper end of the pin resting on the segment, a pivoted latch member carried by the extension, said latch member being movable into a notch of the segment, adjustably connecting the pivot pin to the bracket whereby the angular position of the gear casing and propeller may be readily varied with respect to the boat on Which it is supported.
