' This invention relates to certain novel improvements in torches and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this .ing pan utilized to vaporize the fuel within the torch to create a vapor pressure which, when realized, causes a continuous and forced flow of vapor fuel to a burner tip located within a blow tube and which blow tube, when heated, will, upon extinction of the pilot burner, vaporize the fuel and cause a continuous and uninterrupted fuel supply to the burner tip to the extent of producing a fuel flow of steady, uniform, and intense heat.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a torch in which the parts will be so constructed and arranged, one with respect to 'the other as will permit of easy assembly and economical manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical cross sectional detail view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of a burner tip embodied in the invention;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a side elevational View, partly in section, of a. torch illustrating a modified form of construction over that shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, wherein there is illustrated the preferred form of construction of my invention, l0 indicates a tank within which the fuel to be vaporized is adapted to be contained. For convenience of manufacture and for appearance lower peripheral edge portion with an outwardly flaring flange I l which serves to support the tank upon a suitable support.
Within this tank In and adjacent the flange H is a bottom wall l2 which may be welded or otherwise secured to the adjacent walls of the tank. The top wall 13 of the tank has an opening i4 formed therein through which the fuel may be admitted into the tank, and this opening is normally closed by a removable plug l5. Formed either as an integral part of the wall 12, or as a separe te unit thereof and attached thereto in any suitable manner, is a tube It. In the form shown in Fig. 1, this tube I6 projects laterally from the adjacent side Wall of the tank whereas the tube 13' shown in Fig. 5, which is a counterpart of the tube 16, projects vertically through the top substantially bell-shaped and provided at its wall of the tank, in this form of construction the removable plug :5 being threaded into an opening [4' formed in the side wall of the tank l0.
A starting pan is indicated at IT. This starting pan ll comprises a side wall l8 which has its upper peripheral edge portion [9 curved to conform with the adjacent walls of the tank l0. At predetermined points the side wall 18 is provided with outwardly pressed protuberances 2B which are adapted to project into openings 2| to removably attach the pan H to the tank l0, these protuberances 2B and the side wall l8 being provided with air openings 22, whereby to furnish oxygen to the fuel to be burned within the pan [1.
Secured in any suitable manner to the botto wall I2 and opening communication between the tank It] above the bottom wall [2 and the pan I1, is a, conduit 23 having a communicating passage 1 normally closed by a valve stem 25 having a suitable operating'handle 2B. The pan I1 is of a height less than the distance between the bottom edge 21 of the flange l I and the bottom wall !2, so that the bottom of the pan will be disposed above the supporting surface, whereby to prevent burning, scorching, or heating of such surface.
Arranged within the tank ID is a conduit 28, the upper end of which terminates short of the top wall 13 of the tank and is provided with suitable openings 29' to permit the flow of vapor from the tank into and through this conduit 28. This conduit 28 communicates with a valve structure 29 includin a valve stem 30 operable by a handle 3| which controls the flow of vapor from the conduit 28 to a burner tip 32. This burner tip 32 projects into the tube I6 and has a curved tip 33' which is disposed directly over an orifice 34 formed in the shank 35 of this tip, whereby the burning vapor will be directed against the curved portion 32 to heat the tube I6.
To complete the invention there is provided a suitable handle 36 by which the torch may be moved conveniently about.
To start operation of the torch, the valve stem is moved to open communication through the passage 24. This allows a predetermined amount of fuel to flow into the startingpan H. The valve stem 25 is now moved to close the passage and the fuel ignited by insertion of a lighted 'match through any one of the openings 22. This burning fuel will heat the tank HI, vaporize the fuel therein, and the pressure thus created by the heated tank will force the vapor through the openings 29' downwardly through the conduit 28, whereupon by the opening of the valve '29 the vaporized fuel will find exit through the orifice 3 -1 and be thereby ignited from the burning fuel within the pan H. The torch, when once startedin this manner, acts: with regularity, free from risk of explosion, and with a single flame, without any secondary source of heat.
The torch will be operated effectively .ini-any position whether upright, inclined, horizontal, or inverted.
.A torch constructed in accordance with the disclosure herein is extremely efficient and is :applicable toal sorts of uses.
The efficiency of the heating means by which gas vapor is generated in th tank is adequate to maintain ahigh pressure within the tank once the torch has been set operation.
While Ihave illustrated anddescribed the pre- 'ferred form of construction for carrying my invariations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described .my invention, What I claim'as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A torch comprising a tank-having a supporting base, a partition in the tank above the basedividing the torchinito a bottom compartment and a fuel chamber, a starting pan removably attached to the base within the bottom oompartment, means for admitting a predetermined amount of fuel from the fuel chamber to the starting pan, a tube carried by the partition and extending upwardly through the fuel chamber and exterior thereof, a conduit carried by the partition within the fuel chamber and having an upper end portion terminating short ofthe top wall of the fuel chamber, a valve structure associated with the conduit for controlling passage of vaporized fuel therethrough, and a burner tip communicating with said conduit through the valve structure and extending into the tube, said burner tip having a laterally turned end portion disposed in alignment with an orifice formed in said burner tip.
2. A torch comprising a tank having a supporting base, a partition in the tank above the base dividing the torch into a bottom compartment and a fuel chamber, a starting pan removably attached to the base within the bottom compartment, means for admitting a predetermined amount of fuel from the fuel chamber to 'the'starting pan, a tube carried by the partition and extending upwardly through the fuel chamber and exterior thereof, a conduit carried by the partition within the fuel chamber and having an upper end portion terminating short of the top wall of the fuel chamber, a valve structure associated with the conduit for controlling passage of vaporized fuel therethrough, a burner tip communicating with said conduit through the valve structure and extending into the tube,
said burner tip having a laterally turned end portion disposed in alignment with an orifice formed in said burner tip, and meansfor-detachably connecting the starting pan to thesupporting base.
3. A torch comprising a tank formedsubstantially bell-shaped in cross section to provid an outwardly flaring supporting flange, a tube carried by the bottom wall of the tank and extending therethroughand exterior thereof, anondu-it carried by said bottom wall and having an upper endportion terminating'short of the top wall of the tank, a valve structure associated with the conduit for controlling communication of vaporized fuel therethrough, a burner tip carried by saidvalve structure and extending into said tube and having a laterally turned end portion disposed in alignment with an exit orifice formed .i-n'said tip, and a starting burner carried by the torch beneath the bottom wall thereof.
