This invention relates to new and useful improvements in power can openers and more particularly to an electric power can opener.
A primary feature of the present invention is to provide a can opener adapted for use in hotels, restaurants, and the like for quickly and readily opening large quantities of cans.
Another important feature of the present invention is to provide a can opener including an adjustable cutter blade adaptable to various sizes of cans as well as to various sizes of circumferential cuts in a can.
A further feature of the present invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which is convenient and easy to operate.
A still further feature of the present invention is to provide a device of the class described that is simple and practical in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, efficient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view of the improved can opener with a can applied thereto, and with parts of the opener broken away and shown in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 1 and. with the can removed.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I represents a stand of any suitable size and shape, having a circular cut out portion l2.
An annular channel I4 is provided in said portion l2 and adapted to receive ball bearings I 6 on which the outer edge of a circular platform I8 bears for rotation thereon.
The depressed central portion 20* of platform l8 bears on a bearing plate 22 detachably carried by the stand. Said bearing plate is received in a. recess 24 in said out out portion l2 so that the upper face of said bearing plate is positioned slightly above the bottom wall of the cut out portion so that the platform does not bear on the bottom wall of the cut out portion, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Adjustably and swivelly carried by a post 26 mounted on stand H3 is a sleeve 28 having an outwardly projecting arm as which is adjustably connected to a motor supporting bracket 32 having inturned ears 34 which overlie the arm at for sliding horizontal adjustment of the bracket 32.
Bracket 32 is detachably secured to a usual electric motor 36 which drives a shaft 38.
A toothed drive wheel 49 carried by the shaft is adapted to engage the upper edge of a can 42 supported on platform is for rotation of the can.
Swivelly wd removably carried by shaft 38 is a frame 44 having an outwardly extending horizontally disposed arm 46.
The shank 43 of a cutter blade 59 is adjustably connected to a slot 52 in said arm 45, for adjustment of the blade toward and away from frame 44.
In use of the device, a can is placed on platform l8 and the motor 35 adjusted in position over the can. The cutter blade is adjusted on arm 45 in a desired position over the top of the can, and by lowering the motor 35 on post 26 the pointed end of said cutter blade is punched inwardly through the top of the can.
Upon energizing the motor 36, the shaft 38 and the toothed drive wheel 46 are rotated causing a like rotation of the can 42 on platform l8. In this manner the cutter blade forms a circumferential out in the top of the can which may be stopped at any desired point by merely switching the motor 36 to an off position.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An electric can opener comprising a stand, a rotatable platform detachably mounted in said stand and adapted to support a can, a post carried by said stand, motor means adjustably mounted on said post, a shaft rotated by said motor, a drive wheel on said shaft adapted to engage the upper edge of a can for rotating the can with said platform, a frame detachably and swivelly secured to the shaft, and an adjustable cutter blade detachably carried by the frame.

An electric can opener comprising a stand, a rotatable can supporting platform detachably mounted in said stand, a post carried by the stand, motor means adjustably mounted on said post, a shaft rotated by said motor, means on said shaft engaging the upper edge of a can for rotating the latter, a frame detachably and swivelly secured to the shaft, and a slidably adjustable cutter blade carried by the frame.

An electric can opener comprising a stand having an annular recess, means rotatably mounted in said recess for supporting a can, a post carried by the stand, motor means adjustably mounted on said post, a shaft rotated by said motor, means on said shaft engaging the REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
