This invention relates to a tool designed for use by auto fender workers, the primary object of the invention being to provide a hammer which may be effectively used in removing dents of damaged fenders.
An important object of the invention is to provide a hammer of this character which is hollow and provided with a handle within the hollow body portion, the handle to be gripped by the operator in such a way that the device may be used in hammering out dents, the device acting as a guard for the operators hand while the hammer is in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hammer, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device comprises a hollow body portion indicated generally by the reference character 5, the hollow body portion including the hammer section 6 and guard section I, the hammer section B being constructed preferably of steel and curved to provide a curved outer surface which will conform to the curvature of the usual fender so that when the device is used in hammering out a fender, the surface of the fender will be smooth, and not formed with dents caused by hammering the surface with the conventional hammer.
As clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing, the hammer section is formed with a groove in which one edge of the guard section I is positioned, the guard section 1 being provided with openings to receive the screws 8 that secure the guard section to the hammer section.
The hammer section is substantially semi-circular in formation, and is provided with slot 9 extending inwardly from one edge thereof, the slot being of a width to receive the extension 10 formed on one end of the handle H, the extension 10 having an opening through which the headed screw l2 extends for securing the handle in position.
The body portion is open at one end thereof,
so that the operator may pass his hand into the hollow body portion and grip the handle for operating the hammer.
In order to further protect the hand of the operator, the hollow body portion is lined with c'zanvas, as indicated by the reference character From the foregoing, it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a, fender or body workers hammer which is especially designed for removing fender or [body dents, the hammer being one which can be operated in restricted areas where it is necessary to use the hammer when removing dents from fenders, the hammer being usually operated from a point within the confines of the fender, as between the fender and wheel.
What is claimed is:
A tool of the class described, comprising a hollow body portion embodying two separately connected sections, one section being curved to com form to the curvature of a vehicle fender, and constructed of heavy material providing a hammer section, a handle extending across the interior of the body providing a hand grip by means of which the tool is held and operated, the other section being also curved and constructed of light weight material connected with the hammer section by having its edges groove fitted in, and secured to, said hammer section thus providing a guard, guarding the back of the hand gripping the handle, and a hand-protecting lining secured within the guard.
