I Thisnlnventionarelates to arr-operating attachment for; the :handleof an aAB release valve and it is primarily ianobject -of the invention to provide an attachmentofathis kind which can be conveniently "operated I to free the release valve from the. side of-the agar immediatelyadjacent to the triple waive.
' .v It isialso an object of" the invention to provide an attachment "of this kind so constructed and applied :--to';'provide: means 1 for effectively mainatorstayopen with a resultant undesirable leakage or bleeding. v
' A furtherobject of 'thetinventionisizto' provide an. attachment. for. the :handle of an flB's'release valve: which is FaGEIJtGdI'tO be :directly: grasped by a trainman at one" side .of'rthe car for 'opening the-i valve plunger :but which: is' operated by arelease rod from the opposite side of the car.
4 Therdnventionvconsistsv in the details-of construction Land intheconibin'ation and :arrangementof: the-several parts iof my improvedioperating attachment for the handle'of an- AB release valve whereby v certain important advantages are attained, as will :be hereinafter more "fully set lnorder that my invention may be-better understood, I- will now proceed to deseribe the: same with -reference to theaccompanying-drawings, wherein: I v
Figure is afragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating an attachment constructed-in accordancewith an embodiment: of; my: invention. inrapplied: position; the associated parts of the release valve andith'e release rod being-shown in.fragment;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially onitheili'ne 22 of Figure 1, looking in the dire'c tion of-theiarrowy j 5 guref3iis a fragmentary view in outerisi'de elevationyillustrating' the-attachment;
Figure 4 is a, view in side elevation of another embodiment of the invention;
Figure 5 is a view in section on the line 5-5 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrow;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevational view .22 illustrating a further embodlmentzof the invention; Figure '7 is a sectional view taken substantially Figure 8 is a fragmentaryview =partly.zin:"section and partly ain-elevationi illustrating a still further embodimentioftthe invention. 1
In the embodiment of theinventionas illustrated in Figures l -to 301' the drawingsgfi'idenotes the handle vof en-ABrelease--valve and which coacts with the plunger? within the-valve body B for moving the plunger Pintoop'en position upon tilting-or rockingmovement fofthe handleI-I as is well known.
The lower or: outer endportion of"thehandle H is provided with a fork F andoperativelyenigaged with the arms I of said fork F and bridging the space therebetween. is api-n 2. Thispim! is freely passed .throughthe ring-like coupler member or connector 3. "member 3 is i free for either lateral swingingor revolving movement as .an articulated connection-is :provided which is substantially universal.
This coupler member or connector 3 is :pro-
vided with the rigid outstanding forkw l with which is pivotally connected, as at-5, an end-portion of a releaseirod R. lfIhis rod R extends to the side of the car remote from-thetriple valve of which the relief valve forms a part-'and'which triple valve in the modernxassemblyl is placed closely adjacent to one sideof-the car.
Alsofreely disposed through the ring-liketeouple'r 3 is a pin 6 carried by and bridging thespace between the arms 1, of the fork A aththe upper end portion of anelongated hand grasp When it is desired to bleed the release valve, the trainman, jif at the same side of thenc'aras the triple valve, is only :reqiiired to i take. hold of the hand grasp G and pulllthe same sufiiciently to rock-'thehandle H to move the plunger Piinto :open position, "whereas ifith'e train'man should be at the opposite side of the car, heie'anreadily -effeet the desired Y opening of the plunger by pull upon the release valve R.
' By'making it necessary for the'trainmanatlthe triple .valve side 'ofi'the car to. directly, pull the hand grasp G, there is eliminated .thetendency on the part of theitrainmandtoflkick the handle H or to strike such handle with'thebrake club.
Should the trainmankickiorstrike th'e hand grasp G', there wouldbe no. action .upon thehandleifl due to the free articulated mounting of the hand grasp G through the instrumentality of the coupler or connector 3. It is also true that the trainman cannot open the plunger P by kicking or striking the outer end of the release rod R on account of the same free articulated connection afforded by the coupler or connector 3.
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the coupler member or connector comprises a plate B, herein disclosed as of a quadrant form although I do not wish to be limited in this respect. This plate 8 is provided with the alignedspaced openings'll, and [0, the opening .9 to be considered as the upper opening and the opening as the lower opening.
The upper opening 9 has freely inserted therethrough the pin ll carriedby the fork at the outer or lower end of the handle B for theAB release valve while the lower opening H) has freely disposed therethrough the pin 12 carried by the fork M at one end of the hand grasp I5. The plate 8 at its lower portion is provided with a laterally directed fork [6 which is adapted to be pivotally connected, as" at H, with the inner extremity of a release rod'lB. I
In this second embodiment of the invention, it is'to be noted'that' the hand grasp l5 and also the release rod [Shave such articulated connection with the handle B to eliminate opening the valve plunger by kicking orstriking either the hand grasp [5 'or the release rod 18.
'In the embodiment of theinvention as illustrated in Figures 6 and- 7 of the drawings, the coupler member orconnector i9 is herein disclosed as substantially" semicircular in form and ina plane aligned with its straight edge Zll is provided with the suitably spaced openings 2 l and 22. The lower opening-2'2 provides means for articulated connectionwith the hand grasp 23 Whild the upper opening 2| allows the desired pivotal connection with the outer or lower end portion of the handle 24 for the valve plunger.
member or fconnector 19 substantially "centrallyo'f; its straight edgeifl isprovided with the'o'uts'tanding spaced,arms 25 between which are received the inneifextremity of a release rod 26, said arms 25 and'rod Z Bbeing pivotally connected, as atZl'. In this thirdembodiment of the invention," the samel'benencial articulation is provided to prevent opening. of the plunger of the "valve as theresult of eitherkickingor striki g. ffIn the embodimentiof' 'the invention asillustr'ated Figure 8, thejcoupler member or connector comprises a body 28' with which is swivelly connected 'a depending eye member 29 for free articulated connection, as at 38, with one end lp'ortionof the hand grasp 3|. a
The opposite or. upper end of the body 28 is provided with an upstanding loop member; 32
which provides .meansfor a free. articulated con- ;nectionibetween the body ,28 :andl'the outer, or lewer end portion of thehandle 33 for the plunger of the releasegvalve. The body 28is provided with 3 4 with which i piyotally' connected, as at as, the inner endportion of the release rod 36 1 In this last embodimentjof the inventiomit is believed to be equally apparent that theas'sembly aglaterally disposed and. .outwardly directed fork is: one which will substantially eliminate openkickor strike. 1
ing of the valve plunger as theresult of either a {It is also believed "to be obvious that in each of the embodiments of the invention as hereinbefore set forth, the, assembly is onejwhereby the handle for the plunger of the valvefwill normally be 4 maintained in a neutral position and which position will not be affected by fouling or sticking of the associated release rod which is operated from the side of the car remote from the triple valve.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an operating attachment for the handle of an AB release valve constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
1. In combination with the operating handle for the plunger of an AB release valve, a ringlike connector freely engaged with the handle,
a release rod, and a pivotal connection between the ring-like connector and the release rod.
2. In combination with the operating handle for the plunger of an AB release valve, a ringlike connector freely engaged with the handle, a release rod, a pivotal connection between the "ring-like connector and the release rod, a hand grasp, and means for freely connecting the hand grasp with the ring-like connector.
In combination with the handle for the tween the hand grasp and the plate.
4. In combination with the handle for the plunger of an AB release valve, a connector comprising a body, means for freely engaging the body with the handle, a release rod, an articulated connection between the release 'rod and body, a hand grasp; and a =swiveled articulated connection between the'handgrasp and the body. 5. In an AB release valve having a plungerand a handle connected with and depending from the plunger; operating means for the plunger comprising a connector attached to and hanging from the handle, a hand'grasp attached to and hanging from the connector substantially directly below said handle, and a release rod attached to and extending laterally from one side of the connector.- I
6. Operating means for an AB-release valve as set forth in claim 5, wherein the attachment of the connector to the handle is pivotal and the attachment between the hand grasp and the connector and between the release rod and the conne'ctoris in'each case pivotal.
7 Operating means for an AB release valve as stated ine-claim 5, wherein: the attachments between the connector and the handle, hand grasp and release rod are: pivotal for turning on parallel axes.
