' 4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a drawing board apparatus.
More specifically, the present invention proposes the construction of an apparatus including *a, drawing board and a device secured thereto having a ruler movable longitudinally and transversely of the board, and another ruler pivoted to the first ruler for rotation relative thereto in the plane of the board, the movements of the rulers being affected by geared mechanisms whereby accurate drafting by use of the rulers may be carried out with small dimension measurements, the mechanisms being provided with scales indicating the amounts of the movements. A furtherobject is to provide an apparatus as aforesaid constructed of light material, so that the apparatus maybe handled manually with ease, and of compact configuration, especially as to height. I
Another object is to provide an apparatus as aforSaid in which at least one of the mechanisms includes gears ratioed so that very small, accurate movements can be affected.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanyingdrawings, and to the appended claims inwhich the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The apparatus, according to this invention, in--. cludes a wooden drawing board H]. A rack I I extends along the left-hand end edge of the board,
asviewed in Fig. 1. Two spaced lugs |2having dove-tailed grooves are secured to the bottom of the rack II and two aligned dove-tail tongued fingers l3 are secured to the bottom of the board l0 and having dove-tailed portions 13a disposed in the dove-tail grooves of the lugs l2, gripping the sides of the grooves of the lugs I2 adjacent the board. A wedge I4 is driven in each groove of each lug l2 alongside the half dove-tailedporg tions I311, for holding the rack tightly against the board, each of the wedges [4 having one dove-tail side cooperating with the dove-tail side of the groove remote from the board Ill. Thus, eachof the lugs l2 has a full dove-tail groove and the half dove-tailed portions [3a of the fingers l3 together with the wedges M in each groove form a full dove-tail tongue. Any looseness in the apparatus during use can be immediately taken up by a slight tap on the wedges l4, forcing'th'em further into the grooves of the lugs 12. Two spaced plates [6 are extended longitudi nally of the board l0 and are disposed across the top of the rack I I, perpendicular to a dove-tail groove l1 formed in the upper face of the rack. In this dove-tail groove l1 beneath each plate and in engagement with the sides of the groove H, are two spaced guides l8, each of which is pivotally connected to its correlated plate by a rivet IS. A wedge 2|] is slidably disposed between each set of guides l8, this wedge, when forced be tween the guides, rigidly holding the plates to the rack against movement along the groove l1 and when loosened in the guides, permitting this 0 movement, as will presently appear.
Plates l6 are secured together to form a'rigid structure by a plate 2| crossing the plates It at their bottom faces and riveted thereto. Plates l6 at their adjacent inner edges are provided with top flanges 22 which form a track 23 with the upper surface of the plate 2 I. Two long bars are slidably disposed in this track 23, the upper bar being a ruler 24 and the lower bar being a, slidable spacer or filler member 25. A rack 25, extending longitudinally for a portion of the ruler, is secured to the top face thereof by rivets. The spacer member 25 is adapted to be moved manually in the track to position it in the place where it will best support the ruler 24 for any adjustment of the ruler.
Gear mechanisms are provided for adjusting the ruler both longitudinally and transversely of the board. The transverse movement mechanism includes a wheel 21 journalled on one of the is in driving relation, through an idler gear'29 with a large gear 39 in mesh with the teeth rack" mechanism for effecting both longitudinal and transverse movement of the ruler across the board, whereby, in drafting, accurate movements of the ruler can be obtained parallel to any of the four sides of the board. A triangle 4| is also mounted on the ruler for movement therealong and a ruler 42 is pivotally connected to the end of ruler 24 for swinging thereabout to make lines that are not parallel to the sides of the board.
Ruler 42 is of length such that it can swing a full 360 degrees, passing under the ruler 24, the spacer being retracted to permitthis. Also, the triangle can slide the full length of the ruler 24, the spacer being retracted to permit this also.

The wheel 2'! also has a bottom peripheral row of teeth 32 coacting with a spring member 33 which slightly resists turning of the wheel and by meshing with the teeth 32, aids in holding the wheel against accidental movement. It also provides means for effecting very slight successive movements of the ruler transversely of the board, as the spring member makes a slight ticking noise as it leaves the groove between two teeth 32 to go into the nextgroove'. indicating that the wheel has been turned a. degree equal to one tooth, which it is contemplated will be a very small angle. The wheel 2! is also provided with a scale on its upper face, and an indicator 34, secured to the plate IS on which wheel 21 is journalled, coacts with this scale to indicate the position ,and movements of the plates along the groove Thus wheel 21 provides simple and accurate means for effecting small measured movements of the'ruler 24 transversely of the board.
The apparatus is also provided with gear mechanism for moving the ruler 24 longitudinally of theboard ID, as aforesaid. This mechanism includes a wheel 35 journalled on the other'of the plates l6 and having secured thereto a small gear 36 in mesh with an idler gear,3.'|, also journalled on the other plate IS. The idler gear 31 in turn meshes with the rack 26. Wheel 35 is provided with a handle 38 for rotating it and has a scale on its upper face. An indicator 39 is secured to the other plate I6 for coaction with the scale of wheel 35 whereby adjustment of the ruler 1ongitudinally of the board may be accurately determined. Rotation of wheel 35, by means of the gears associated therewith and the rack 25, affects longitudinal movement of the ruler 224} The ruler is provided with a hole 46 which may be moved in line with a similar .hole in the spacer whereupon the ruler and spacer may be connected by a pin inserted in the two holes. In such case the spacer may be moved longitudinally of the board with the ruler by means of the wheel 21. y
A brake is provided for preventing accidental movement of the ruler 24. The brake includes a shoe 2'4 slidably supported by one plate 4 5 and pressed by springs 24 against an edge of the ruler 24. Between springs 24' a set screw 24 bears against the shoe, this set screw when turned, forcing the shoe tightly against the ruler.
The foregoing description has set forth gear of the shaft. Another belleville washer 46 is mounted on the shaft 43 on top of the gear 45. The top of the shaft is'threaded and a handle 41*iss'crewed thereon. Handle 41 forms means for locking the ruler 42 in adjusted position, tightening of the handle compressing the belleville washers 44 and 46 so that the two rulers are frictionally held in engagement.
.Gear45 is in mesh with a gear 48 on a shaft 49 mounted on the ruler 24. An indicator disc 50 is mounted on top of the shaft 49, this disc having a scale. An indicator 5| is secured to the ruler 24 in coaction with the disc 50 for recording .-rotation of the ruler 42 relative to. the ruler 24.
The triangle 4| is secured to a guide 52 sur-f rounding the ruler 24, the ruler 24 forming a trackfor the guide 52. Guide 52 has a recess in which-is mounted a gear 53 in meshwith'the rack 26 and mounted on a shaft 54. An indicator disc 54 is secured on top of shaft 54 and an indicator 55 is secured to the guide 52 for coaction with a scale on top of the disc 54 for recording movement of the triangle, the gear 53 acting first to rotate the triangle indicator disc and also acting as a locking means holding the triangle against accidental movement but permitting the triangle to move when a definite force is exerted against it. The triangle 4| can be moved back and forth along the ruler 24 manually.
The triangle 4| is further adapted to rotate relative to guide 52. To this end guide 52 is provided with a recess in which is disposed a coil spring 4| A plunger pin 4P, pivotally-connecting the triangle to the guide, passes through the recess and the spring 4| and into thetriangle. Triangle 4| around the pivot pin M is provided with a series of holes 4| and the guide 52 is provided with a dowel 52 for enacting with the holes. Spring 4| normally holds the guide and triangle together and presses against a head M of the pin 41. To turn the triangle about the pivot in 4|, head M is pressed down, at the same time lifting guide 52 to disengage dowel 52 from the hole 4| in which it is disposed. The triangle can then be turned until the dowel enters another hole 4 A drawing board apparatus constructed in accordance with a modification of this invention is shown fragmentally in Fig. 10. It distinguishes from the apparatus of Fig. 1 only in the gear mechanism for moving the ruler 24' longitudinally of the board. A somewhat different mechanism is used to provide for very small movements, a gearratio being employed'suitable to performthis aim.
"The mechanism shown in Fig. 10 includes a ring gear 56 surrounding thewheel 35', this ring gear having-a scale on its upper face. Ring gear 56 is journalled on a bracket 51 secured to plate I 6 and an indicator 58 for coaction with the scale of the ring gear 56 isalso mounted on the bracket 51. Ring gear 56 has external teeth meshing with a smallgear 59 mounted on top of a shaft 60 journalled' on the bracket 51. A large gear 6| is also secured on shaft 60 and meshes'with a smaller gear 62 securedto wheel 35H The gear 52 is on a shaft (integral with wheel 35 or secured thereto) and another gear 36' is also mounted on this shaft, and meshes with rack 26'.
The operation of this apparatus is as follows:
The wheel 35' is rotated by the handle 38, rotating gear 82 and gear 36'. Gear 36', in mesh with the rack 26 moves the ruler 24' longitudinally of the board. Gear 62, meshing with gear 6| drives shaft 60 and gear 59, which rotates the ring gear .56 to record fine movements. Thus ring gear 56 and its associated gears is only an indicator mechanism, and not a driving mechanism. However, if desired, a handle can be provided on the ring gear 56 for driving the ruler mechanism from this handle.
From the foregoing description of the apparatus of Fig. 10 it will be seen that the wheel 35' makes many rotations to one rotation of the ring gear 55, ring gear 56 thus forming means for effecting fine adjustments. Other parts of the apparatus of Fig. 10 corresponding to like parts of the apparatus of Figs. 1-9 are indicated by like references with an accent added.
A drawing board apparatus is shown in Figs. 11-12 which embodies the present invention in a simpler form. It includes the same board l" and rack II" as Fig. 1. Also the same ruler 42" and associated parts connected to a ruler 24" having a rack 26". However, ruler 24" moves in a track in a single plate l6". This plate carrying a small gear 63 in mesh with rack 26". Plate l6" slides in groove ll" of rack I l" and has a gear 64 in mesh with teeth l" of rack H Other parts similar to corresponding parts of Fig. 1 are indicated by like references with two accents added.
The operation of this apparatus is as follows:
Plate 16" is merely moved back and forth in groove l1" manually, gear 64 and teeth I5" serving to resist the movement and to prevent accidental movement. Similarly, ruler 24" is merely moved back and forth in the track ofplate [5", gear 63 and rack 26" serving to resist this movement and to prevent accidental movement. Ruler 42" acts exactly as did ruler 42 and no further description thereof is deemed necessary.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
1. In an article of the class described having a drawing board and ruler slidably mounted for longitudinal movement relative to the board, means for moving the ruler longitudinally relative to the board, comprising a rack mounted on the top face of the ruler, a bracket supported on one side of the board and overlyingand spaced above said rack, a shaft rotatively extended through said bracket to one side ofsaid rack, a gear on the bottom end of said shaft meshing with said rack, a hand wheel mounted on the upper end of said shaft by which the shaft may be turned to turn said gear and move said ruler, a ring gear rotatively surrounding said hand wheel, a scale on the top face of said ring gear, and means interposed between said ring gear and said shaft for turning said ring gear when said shaft is turned to record longitudinal movements of the ruler.
2. In an article of the class described having a drawing board and ruler slidably mounted for longitudinal movement relative to the board, means for moving the ruler longitudinally relative to the board, comprising a rack mounted on the top face of the ruler, a bracket supported on one side of the board and overlying and spaced above said rack, a shaft rotatively extended through said bracket to one side of said rack, a gear on the bottom end of said shaft meshing with said rack, a hand wheel mounted on the upper end of said shaft by which the shaft may be turned to turn said gear and move said ruler, a ring gear rotatively surrounding said hand wheel, a scale on the top face of said ring gear, and means interposed between said ring gear and said shaft for turning said ring gear when said shaft is turned to record longitudinal movements of the ruler, and an indicator mounted on said bracket and overlying said scale of said ring gear.
3. In an article of the class described having a drawing board and ruler slidably mounted for longitudinal movement relative to the board, means for moving the ruler longitudinally relative to the board, comprising a rack mounted on the top face of the ruler, a bracket supported on one side of the board and overlying and spaced above said rack, a shaft rotatively extended through said bracket to one side of said rack, a gear on the bottom end of said shaft meshing with said rack, a hand wheel mounted on the upper end of said shaft by which the shaft may be turned to turn said gear and move said ruler, a ring gear rotatively surrounding said hand wheel, a scale on the top face of said ring gear, and means interposed between said ring gear and said shaft for turning said ring gear when said shaft is turned to record longitudinal movements of the ruler, and a handle eccentrically mounted on said hand wheel by which it may be conveniently manually rotated.
4. In an article of the class described having a drawing board and ruler slidably mounted for longitudinal movement relative to the board, means for moving the ruler longitudinally relative to the board, comprising a rack mounted on the top face of the ruler, a bracket supported on one side Of the board and overlying and spaced above said rack, a shaft rotatively extended through said bracket to one side of said rack, a gear on the bottom end of said shaft meshing with said rack, a hand wheel mounted on the upper end of said shaft by which the shaft may be turned to turn said gear and move said ruler, a ring gear rotatively surrounding said hand wheel, a scale on the top face of said ring gear, and means interposed between said ring gear and said shaft for turning said ring gear when said shaft is turned to record longitudinal movements of the ruler, said means comprises a gear mounted on said shaft between the adjacent faces of said bracket and said hand wheel, a second Shaft rotatively mounted on said bracket alongside said ring gear, a. gear fixedly mounted on said second shaft and meshing with said gear between the adjacent faces of said bracket and said hand wheel, and a second gear fixedly mounted on said second shaft and meshing with said ring gear.
