Description

Patented July 11, 1950 UNITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE SILENCER Earl Henry Fundom, Kenton, Ohio Application February 16, 1948, Serial No. 8,595
1 Claim. 1.
This invention relates to improvements in silencers or mufflers.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved silencer or mufiler for the exhaust from an internal combustion engine.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved internal combustion engine exhaust silencer or muflier which will include a cylindrical body having an inlet and outlet, with a plurality of longitudinally spaced transversely extending ported baflle plates supported in said body, whereby the explosions from the engine will be efficiently and eiiectively silenced and mufiled.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved internal combustion engine exhaust silencer or muiller having an inlet at one end and an outlet at the other end, with a plurality of transversely extending longitudinally spaced bafile plates having aligned ports formed therein for efficiently and efiectively silencing and mufiiing the engine exhaust, and said body being provided with a series of radial longitudinally extending cooling fins secured to the exterior surface of said body.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved silencer or muffler for an internal combustion engine which will be highly emcient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manuiacture and produce.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention a claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the improved exhaust silencer or mufller.
Figure 2 is a, transverse sectional view through the improved exhaust silencer or muffler.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawing to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved exhaust silencer or muffler for an internal combustion engine including an elongated tubular body i having a plurality of radial longitudinally extending cooling fins 2 2 formed exteriorly of and integrally with the body I.
The inlet end of the silencer or mufiler body I is closed by an integral end member 3, which supports the integral inlet pipe 4, and which in turn telescopically receives the end of the exhaust pipe 5 connected with the internal combus-ion engine exhaust manifold (not shown). The pipes 4 and 5 are secured in fixed position by means of the arcuate semi-circular clamping bands 3 and "I and securing bolts 8 and 9 extending through the opposite ends thereof.
An internal stop flange II] will be formed in the body I adjacent its inlet end, and a plurality of apertured baffle plates II of circular shape and of the same diameter or the interior diameter of the body I will be supported in longitudinally spaced relation in the body I, the innermost baffle plate II seating against the stop flange Iil, and the other baiiie plates being separated a uniform distance by means of the series of spacer rings I2. The oil-center openings I3 in the bafile plates II will be arranged in Iongitudinal alignment with each other and with the inlet pipe 4.
The outlet from the silencer body I will consist of an outlet end closure I4, suitably secured in the end of the body I, and an outlet pipe I5 will be formed integrally with the end closure I4 and will be in longitudinal alignment with the openings IS in the bafile plates II. The outlet pipe l5 will be curved downwardly, as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
In operation, the silencer inlet pipe i is attached to the exhaust pipe 5 from the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine (not shown), and the exhaust gas passes into the silencer body I, and expands through the openings I3 in the baffie plates II to fill the space between the plates ll, thereby mufiling the noise of the exhaust.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construc tion may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A silencer comprising an elongated cylindrical tubular body integrally formed with a closed end having an inlet opening in its marginal portion and spaced wholly from the axis of said body, said body being formed with an annular stop flange spaced a substantial distance from 3 said closed end, a plurality of thin flat circular baflle plates fitted into said body, each baflle plate having an opening registering with and co-extensive in diameter with the inlet opening, annular spacer rings fitted into said body and alternating with the baffle plates to space said baffle plates longitudinally of the body, said rings respectively being of a thickness corresponding to the thickness of the baflle plates, and an outlet end wall having an outlet opening coextensive in diameter and registering with the inlet and baflle plate openings, said stop flange and outer end wall adapted to hold the baffle plates and rings in position within the body.
