Description

J y 11, 1950 5. CHARLES 2,514,840
TRIPLE SWIVEL Filed April 22, 1947 Inventor Sihnef Charles Patented July 11, 1 950 Es PATENT OFFICE TRIPLE SWIVEL Sinnet Charles, Welch, W. Va., assignor'of one-' half to Milton B. Crisp, Welch, W. Va.
,Application Ajpruzz, 1947, Serial No. 743,098
, carried by the headed portion of the principal eye.
The object of the invention is to structurally, functionally and otherwise improve upon three way swivels of the class under consideration by providing an adequate and complete construction which is possessed of requisite simplicity,
durability, reliability and equivalent functions so necessary in appropriate handling of a plurality of rigging ropes or the like to minimize relative twisting and snarling of said ropes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a triple eye swivel construction employing both circular and elongated eyes, the same being interrelated to facilitate proper coaction of samev when employed in the logging industry, or wherevernecessary when handling loads for dragging, lifting and where relative axial turning of the independent ropes or lines is necessary to overcome the likelihood of independent intertwining and snarling of said ropes.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, showing a triple swivel constructed in accordance with the principles of the present in-, vention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional and elevatio'nal view taken on the plane of the line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the elongated eyes or so-called links.
or ring-like form as indicated at 6, the same having a lateral pin or shank I projecting from one peripheral side; The shank adjoins the eye proper by way of a circular abutment shoulder 8 and the outer end of the shank is provided with a shoulder forming head 9. The shoulder is spaced apart to accommodate a ring III which is a part of the assembling hub means. The latter also includes a pair of diametrically opposite shanks, the shanks here denoted by the numerals i l and I2 and being of general L-shaped form and terminating in shoulder forming heads l3. The headed ends serve to accommodate annular collar portions 14 on the elongated eyes or so-called links l5 and I6. The numerals I! designate loose fitted spacing collars interposed between the collars l4 and the laterally bent portions of the headed studs l l and I2. The studs are such as to project outwardly beyond the head 9 in order to position the main ring or eye 6 on-center and the links I5 and I6 off-center.
It is obvious that the entire device, its parts clustered together as shown and described, is bodily turnable in a unitary sense and that all of the three eyes are, in addition, independently turnable or rotatable on their respective axes. Thus, in load handling ropes, chains and equivalent riggings, three independent lines or ropes may be accommodated, one attached to each eye. Moreover, when thus connected together the ropes will have suflicient independent axial movements to, under ordinary circumstances, permit required freedom and to prevent undesirable entwining and bothersome tangling.
A careful consideration of the foregoing description in conjunction with the invention as illustrated in the drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding and impression of the alleged features of merit and novelty sufficient to clarify the construction of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Minor changes in shape, size, materials and rearrangement of parts may be resorted to in actual practice so long as no departure is made from the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A triple swivel construction of the class described comprisin a ring adapted to function as a hub,,said ring being provided at diametrically opposite points with integral L-shaped headed studs, collars surrounding the studs, said.
collars serving as spacers, a pair of links, each link being provided with a fixed assembling and swivelling collar, said swivelling collars links being mounted on the headed ends of said studs.
being mounted on the headed ends of said-studs,-
and an eye. having a double shouldered shank,
said ring surrounding the shank at points be tween the shoulders.
shown and described, a principal eye provided oh one side with an outstanding shank' said shank having longitudinally spaced shoulders, a" hub forming ring rotatably surrounding said shank and retained swivelling in place between the stated shoulders, said ring being provided-on-- 4 a pair of elongated complemental links provided at corresponding ends with swivelling collars, said swivelling collars being mounted on the headed ends of the L-shaped studs, and spacing collars also mounted on said L-shaped studs, confined to retention on the long limbs of said studs and abutting the coacting short limbs of the respective studs.
