- 'll illl lllll'- 14 through the opening. The resilient member 33 is secured to wall 32 and is adapted to return ejector 21 to its starting position as shown in Fig. 4.
The ejection operation is accomplished simply by forcing handle 28 in a direction toward opening 24, the motion being imparted to wall 30 through stem28 When ejector 21 is subsequently "returned? to; starting position as shown in Fi'gf i, contact bar "19' which is constantly bearing against cigarettes l4 immediately forces the next cigarette into the position originally occupied by the end cigarette M and the ejector device is ready for a subsequent similar operation. The operation of the device is shown clearly in Fig. 4 which indicates a resilient memforth. Thus catch member 38 may-be moved back, stem 28 of ejector 2'! moved into recess 39, and catch member 38 moved to close off recess '39 thereby retaining stem 28 therewithin as illustrated by the dot and dash lines 28 in Fig. 5.
:This effectively controls the operation of the device and discourages meddling by unauthorized "persons. The locking means is quickly and easily ber 33 secured to wall 32 ofiel'ector zl and see cured at its other end to wall i6. This resilient member 33 optionallypasses around a post 34 mounted on the case I sc that its resilient force exerteddn the -correct"direction. Likewise a secondresilient-member35 is secured to contact barl9 and passes around apost3B to be secured at itsother -end-toflwallJ6; Thus there is a constant force acting on contact bar l9 urging it toward wall I"! and at the same time the constant force urging-'ejector'il toits starting or rest position. For purpose of more attractive design the -greater-portion of resilient members 33 and 35 will be contained behind a housing wall 31 at the rear of case H.
- The resilient members 33"and 35 may be constructed of any desired "material such-as, elastic rubberfa metal sprihgor'th'e like. Alp'articular structural material will be optional and within the ability of those skilled" in the art to select.
Except where unusual wearing qualities are necessary or where the device isto be exposed to unusual temperature or humidity conditions,
members 33 and 35fwillgenerally be constructed er anelas-tic rubber or'rubbersubstitute material.
f'I't" will be'understood' thatnumerous changes instructurean'd design may be made in 'the article described herein'without departing from thescope of the invention. For example; the
size-and the shape of 'the'qontainer may be varied to accomodate" cigarettes of various sizes and likewise the design of the container may be modified for decorative purposes. The container may be constructed of numerous materials such as wood, metal,-hard-rubber, plastic and-the like. In Figs. 5 to '7 there'is shown a locking means which'is adapted to 'be'used'in connection with the'arti'cle describedgherein to discourage meddling'or tampering with the device. -The1ocking means comprises a device adapted to retain stem 28 in "position half way 'between'its' raised positionas' shown inFig. rand its ejection position shown in dotted outline'in Fig. 4. Thus for example, the ejector 21 may be moved to eject preventing-"further operation until the locked slot 26-on wall l1: and arecess 39 in slot 26adjacentto-catchmembr-SIB. Catch member 38 comprisesa 'body" 39'- having"a' finger '40 extendingirom one end thereof 'and'having a guide rail 4! on its rear surface: Optionally, a button or handle 42 on the front surface of catch member'38 allows moreconvenient operation thereof. Along. the lower edge of slot 26 is a recess 39 sliding movement, a catch member opened by sliding catch member 38 and removing stem 28 from recess 39.
In Fig. 8 there is shown a further form of the invention comprising a. case ll having a cover I2 the. cover having a flap 22' and a hole 24 as in the previous form'of the invention. In this form of the invention there is a contact bar [9 a retaining member l5 a guide rail 20 and other members as described and numbered in connection with Figs. 1 to 4.
In'addition to the purposes described hereinbefore, the article Ill shown in Fig. 8 is a ladies compact in combination therewith. 'To the side of wall It, which serves the boundary of the cigarette case portion of the article, there is a space or chamber 44 bounded-by "front wall 18 to thecase I l wall It, side or end wall 16*, and rear or housing wall. 31. This chamber 44 has a center or dividing wall 45 to divide into at least two compartments for containing powder, rouge, or other cosmetic needs. of cover member I2. there are optionally mounted a mirror 25 or the like and a picture or picture frame 25 or the like.
The use and operation of the device according to this form of the.:invention is similar to the use and operation. description hereinbefore in connection with Figs. 1.to 4 and the locking means-shown in Figs. 5' to 7 may optionally be added thereto.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred .embodiments of. my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise, constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my. invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a dispensing container having a case formed adjacent oneend wall with an opening through which a cigarette can be endwisely dispensed and a slidable ejector within the case for moving the cigarette endwisely through the opening, means for locking the ejector in a fixed position within the casing,.c0mprising a stem projected laterally from the side of the ejector, the said one end wall being formed with. an
elongated slot through which said stem may project to be moved along the length of said slot to move the ejector in a direction to eject the cigarette, said slot continuing alongone side intermediate of its-ends into a recess engaged by said stem for holding the ejector against slidably mounted on the said'one end wall adjacent one end of said recess to be movable toward and away from said recess, a finger formed on the On. the inside end of said catch member adjacent said recess and extended across said recess between said slot and said stem retaining said stem in said recess, whereby when said catch member is moved in a direction away from said recess said finger moves clear of said recess freeing said stem to be moved out of said recess into said slot so that said stem can be moved along the length of said slot. f
2. In a dispensing container having a case formed adjacent one end wall with ant-opening through which a cigarette can be endwisely dispensed and a slidable ejector within the case for moving the cigarette endwisely through the opening, means for locking the ejector-in a fixed position within the casing, comprising a stem projected laterally from the side of the ejector, the said one end wall being formed with an elongated slot through which said stem may project to be moved along the length of said slot to move the ejector in a direction to eject the cigarette, said slot continuing along one side intermediate of its ends into a recess engaged by said stem for holding the ejector against sliding movement, a catch member slidably mounted on the said one end wall adjacent one end of said recess to be movable toward and away from said recess, a finger formed on the end of said catch member adjacent said recess and extended across said recess between said slot and said stem retaining said stem in said recess, whereby when said catch member is moved in a direction away from said recess said finger moves clear of said recess freeing said stem to be moved out of said recess into said slot so that said stem can be moved along the length of said slot, said finger and said catch member having their sides, which are opposed to the side of the finger which engages said stem when in said recess, flush with the adjacent side of said slot so as not to interfere with movement of said stem along the length of said slot.
