This invention relates to pail holders.
It is an object of my invention to provide a simple `but highly Aelicient pail holder which is adapted to be attached to a' flatrv surface vand which will hold a pail securely embraced there-v Moreispecically, itis an object of my invention to provide a pail holder having a split annulus which has a toggle take-uplink connecting the two ends, whereby easy reception of the lower portion of a pail 'therein yisy permitted when said toggle link is in open position, andwhereby said annulus tightly embraces said-pail tor securely hold the same when said toggle link is in closed position, said holder'structure being adapted to be attached to a flat surface.- l I v l It is -a further object of my tinvention -to jprovide `a pail holder -having a split annulus and means whereby -the tension -i-n said annulus and the take-up therein when tightened is equally distributed throughout its entire length.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will be more apparent from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my pail holder with the lower portion of a pail retained therein, the upper portion of said pail being removed;
Figure 'i2 is a side elevational View of the structure shown in Figure 1; and
Figure r3 is a Vertical sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of Figure '1, showing the toggle take-up link in detail.
As shown in the accompanying sketches, I provide a pail holder designated as an entirety by the letter A and having a split annulus 5, one end of which has a hook 6 formed therein by doubling back the end portion of said annulus 5 upon itself; the other end portion of said annulus 5 being disposed in open spaced relation to the hook 6 is also doubled back upon itself to receive a connector link 1, said connector link I being secured therein in pivotal relation thereto by rivets 8 through the two overlapped thicknesses of the annulus 5. A protector plate 9 having its end portion underlying the second mentioned end of annulus 5 is also connected thereto by the rivets 8.

The straps I 3, Iii and I5 have upstanding arms I3a, Illa and I 5a, respectively. 'Ihese arms I3a, Ida and ld are all fixed, as by rivets Il, to the annulus 5 in periferally spaced relationship to each other. Each of said straps has an attachment aperture Ib, IIb and I5b, formed in the horizontal portion thereof, the attachment apertures Mb and I5b being elongated to permit said straps I4 and I5 to slide on a screw or bolt through said apertures.
The protector plate 9 underlies the toggle link IB when in closed position, as shown in the accompanying drawings, and the bearing ends II ride thereon, the inner edges of the flanges Ib engaging thereagainst as best shown in Figures 1 and 3.
The straps I3, I4 and I5 are initially attached to any flat surface such as the running board of an automobile or the trunk floor or even the floor of a trailer. The screws or bolts through the elongated apertures I 1lb and |519y permit respective straps I 4 and I5 to swing although holding said straps against the ilat surface.
With the toggle link It in open position and the connector link I2 removed from the hook 6, a pail such as the pail I8 is inserted into the annulus 5 with the bottom of said pail engaging against the top surfaces of straps I3, I4 and I5. The link I2 then has its freeend hooked into the hook 6 and the toggle link is then swung on its pivotal connection with link 1, the bearing ends I I riding against the protector plate 9. During this swinging operation of the toggle take-up link Ill the pivotal connection with connector link I2 follows an arcuate path around the pivotal conasiaeei nection with link 'I and ultimately is disposed inwardly of said pivotal connection with link 1 when toggle link I is in completely closed position. This over-center action provides a positively locked take-up connection and is very eiiicient for this type of device.
During this closing operation the annulus has its ends pulled together a. substantial distance so that its inner periphery tightly embraces the outer periphery of the pail I8. As the ends of the annulus 5 .are :pulled together it will be seen that there will be a displacement on each side of the rear strap I3 of the portions of the annulus 5 at the points Where the upstanding arms Ida and I5a,I are xed thereto. By providing the pivotal joint I6 at the center and the elongated slots I4b and |517 it will be seen that the straps I4 and I5 will be freely permitted to follow said displacement Without producing any appreciable stress in either the straps I4 and I5 or in the annulus 5. By this freedom of movement the tension in annulus 5 as Well as the amount of displacement throughout its length Will be substantially equalized.
It will be seen that I have provided a highly efficient, extremely simple pail holder which is particularly adapted for securely holding minnoW pails and the like While in transit and which due to the equalized tension in annulus 5 will not bend said pail out of shape. The protector plate 9 iprevents the bearing ends II from riding directly on the side of the pail and thus protects the pail from undue Wear. The release toggle link mechanism herein provided is particularly adapted to this use, as is obvious from the foregoing description. It provides a positively locking take-up structure which will securely hold during even the severe vibrations of an automobile or trailer traveling over a rough road while 1 center of said annulus, the diverging angles between said strap elements being substantially equal, and upstanding elements fixed at one end to saidv annulus in equally spaced relation around the periphery thereof and fixed at th@ other end to said straps, said pivotal connection between said strap elements permitting certain of said straps and u'pstanding elements to shift When said toggle link is taken up to tightly clamp said annulus about a pail; and means for attaching said strap elements to a lat surface to securely hold down said pall and exert substantially equally distributed hold down force on the pe riphery of said annulus when clamped about a pail.
