Description
June-27, 1950 N. B. BOONE TOOTHBRUSH RACK Filed May 20, 1948 INVENTOR.
I NELSON ,5. BOONE CI|\ Q Iii WM ATT RNEY Patented June 27, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE' Claims.
This invention relates to a rack suitable for supporting tooth brushes or the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a storage rack for tooth brushes which protects the brushes from dust, and in which the brushes are readily accessible for use.
A further object is the provision of a tooth brush rack which is easily installed in a bath room and wherein the tooth brushes are carried on a sliding shelf which may be extended to either side as desired.
These, and other objects of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention by way of example, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation with parts broken away showing the invention in fully extended position;
,Figure 2 is an end elevation showing the invention in collapsed or retracted position, and
Figure 3 is a bottom view showing the invention in partly extended position.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a sleeve or housing I, which may be rectangular in cross section, and has open ends. The housing preferably is formed from sheet stock by bending it into a channel shape and providing flanges 2 and 3 at the bottom. The flanges may be spaced to provide a slot 4 which preferably extends the full length of the housing. At the rear the housing has a clip 5 struck from the back wall 6 by which the housing may be supported from any suitable bracket. However, any other suitable type of fastening means, such as suction cups or the like may be employed to fasten the housing to a wall.
A sliding plate or drawer is received within the housing and has perforations 8 in its bottom of a suitable shape to receive and retain a tooth brush in each opening. The openings illustrated are in the form of a cross so that the tooth brush may be hung therein in any of four positions as desired. The plate 1 is slideably supported on the flanges 2, 3 so that it may be extended to allow removal of the tooth brushes, and in retracted position it is enclosed by the housing I to prevent dust settling on the brushes. If desired, the plate may be provided with imperforate ends 9 and In turned up so as to provide closures for the ends of the housing when the plate is in retracted position. The ends 9 and in also retain the plate in horizontal position when extended, by engagement with the top of the housing. In this arrangement the cross shaped openings for the tooth brushes allow air to circulate around the brushes to dry them.
Stops preferably are provided to prevent accidental complete withdrawal of the plate, and the stops may be arranged to allow extension of the plate to the right or left as desired. Thus, the rack may be installed near a corner without regard to whether there is enough space at one end zoo-15.1)
to allow extension of the shelf. The stops illustrated comprise tabs or tongues II and I2 ex-- tending inwardly from a surface of the housing in offset relation so that the tongue II is at a higher elevation than tongue l2. As shown, the tongues are struck out from the back wall 6 and lie closely adjacent the bottom of the plate and when the plate is extended at the right the tongue I2 passes through slot [4 but engages wall 9 to prevent accidental withdrawal of the plate. However, the plate may be removed at either end by tilting it upwardly to allow the wall 9 (or ill) to pass around the tongue I2 (or II).
The rack illustrated provides an aerated enclosed housing for receiving tooth brushes to protect them from dust. Because the rack can be opened at either end it is unnecessary to stock right and left hand types. It is of simple construction, inexpensive to make, and presents an attractive appearance.
I claim as my invention:
1. A brush rack comprising an open ended housing having a slot in the bottom thereof; an apertured plate telescopically received in said housing and having apertures therein in alignment with said slot; said plate having upturned ends; and stop means for said plate allowing limited extension thereof at either end.
2. A rack as specified in claim 1 wherein said stop means comprises tongues extended from a.
wall of the housing near the respective ends in offset relation, and said turned ends have slots registering respectively with said tongues.
3. A rack as specified in claim 1 wherein said housing comprises a channel member having spaced inturned flanges, said plate being slideably supported on said flanges.
4. A rack as specified in claim 1 wherein. said stop means comprises extensions closely adjacent said plate to prevent upward tilting thereof.
5. A brush rack as specified in claim 1 wherein the upturned ends engage the top of the housing to prevent tilting of the plate in extended posiion.
NELSON B. BOONE.
