CLOTHESLINE SUPPORT Filed Feb. 20, 1948 Lewis Solomon zzvmvrox.
Patented June 27, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 2,512,971 I CLOTHES-LINE SUPPORT Lewis Solomon, Nutley, N. J. Application February 20, 1948, Serial No. 9,831
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in supports for clotheslines, more specifically, indoor clotheslines, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate supporting of such clotheslines from ceiling joists or beams in basements, attics, and the like.
This object is achieved by the provision of a support which may be firmly and securely fastened to an overhead joist, a plurality of line supports being, of course, employed and a clothesline being stretched therebetween and supported thereby.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision of a clothesline support which will facilitate the stretching of a clothesline of considerable length in a relatively small area.
An additional feature of the invention resides in the provision of a clothesline support which will firmly and securely hold the clothesline, so as to prevent the same from sagging.
A still further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a clothesline support which is simple in construction, which may be quickly and easily installed, and which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as will become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clothesline stretched between a'plurality of supports constructed in accordance with the invention and secured to overhead joists;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the invention per se;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the invention;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 44 in Figure 3; and,
Figure 5 is a, cross-sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5-5 in Figure 3.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, more specifically to Figures 2-5 inclusively, the invention consists of a clothesline support designated generally by the reference character III, the same being formed integrally,
preferably by casting, and including an elongated body portion l2, having a substantially T-shaped cross-sectional configuration, as indicated in Figure 5.
The body portion I2 is tapered toward one end thereof, where it is provided with a relatively short neck portion l4, terminating in a disc-shaped clothesline retaining head IS.
The neck portion I4 is of a substantially crossshaped cross-sectional configuration as is best shown in Figure 4, one arm of the cross being extended along the body portion l2 so as to form what may be referred to as a progressively tapering rib 18, as will be readily apparent.
A pair of mounting flanges 20, 22 are provided at the large end of the body portion [2, the flange 20 being disposed transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the body portion, while the flange 22 extends perpendicularly to the flange 20, substantially as shown.
The two flanges 20, 22 are provided with apertures 24 to receive suitable screws, whereby the entire support may be firmly and securely fastened to an overhead joist, beam or rafter 26, as illustrated in Figure 1.
It is to be noted that the flanges 20, 22 engage one edge and one side of the rafter, whereby the entire support is firmly and securely held. Moreover, by virtue of the particular cross-sectional configuration of the body portion l2 and of the neck portion M, the support is prevented from bending or twisting.
When the invention is placed in use, several of the supports may be secured in spaced relation to one or more of the joists or beams 26, whereupon a clothesline 28 may be stretched between the supports, preferably by being wound around the neck portions M of the supports as at 30, and the ends of the clothesline being tied together by a knot 32.
Needless to say, the supports l0 extend downwardly from the joist 26, and the enlarged heads I 6 prevent the clothesline from sliding downwardly of the neck portions I4.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at thi point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A clothesline support comprising a vertically extending plate having front and rear surfaces, 9, horizontal mounting flange extending forwardly from the upper end of said plate, a central web provided longitudinally on the front surface of said plate and connected at its upper end to the lower surface of said flange, a central rib extending longitudinally on the rear surface of said plate, an enlarged disc-shaped head provided centrally at the lower end of said plate, the lower ends of said web and of said rib being connected to said head, the outer longitudinal edges of said plate and of said web being downwardly tapered and coactlng with said rib to provide a cruciform clothesline winding portion adjacent said head, and a triangular mounting member constitutin a vertical continuation of said plate and extending above said flange.
