PLANTING-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,132, dated December 20, `1881. Application filed July 13, 1881. (No model.)
To all 'whom t't may concern Be it known that. I, THOMAS PATEs, in the A the city of Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Planting-Flows, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in planting-plows in which the dropping device is a revolving disk receiving the seed in perforations, whichare carried under a brush to the outside of the box.
My invention consists in a brush of the construction herein shown actuated by a spring and supported by a keeper'of the construction herein shown,occupying a position in one corner of the seed-box and over the seed-carrying disk.
In the drawings my invention is shown in connection with a seed-dropping box such as is used in plantingplows.
Like letters refer to like parts.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a seed-dropping box, A, having a perforated disk, B, revolving in the direction of the arrow, with which my improvements are connected. Fig. 2 is a top view of same as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a frontview,enlarged, ofthe keeper-K, with the brush ct and extension a. Fig.4is a View in perspective, enlarged, of the brush a, with the extension a', showing how they are made, and showing a shoulder,p, where the extension a is joined to the brush a, also showing how the bottom end of the brush is preferably rounded. Fig. 5 is a side view, enlarged, of the keeper K, divided on the dotted lines m x in Fig. 2, showing the brush a, the extension a', and the spring m, the support d, the mouth c, and the channel e. Fig. 6 is a view of the bottom end ofthe keeper K inverted, enlarged, showing how the mouth c and the channel c are formed, and showing the seat a2, in which the brush a is seated when in position.

having one end seated on the shoulder p and the other end seated on the under side of the top shell-wall ot the keeper K,as shown in Fig. 5.
K is the keeper, made of cast-iron, having a mouth, c, by which the corn-seed enters, and channel c, by which the seed passes, the support d supporting the rear side of the brush a, and the support cl forming a cover over the channel c, and a cavityor recess, b,formed by the upper part of the keeper, being shell-walls above the support d, as shown in Fig. 5.
In operation the brush a is placed in position as shown in Fig. 5, and the keeper K placed in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the disk B revolving, the perforations s will be filled with corn seed, and carried in the direction of the arrow under the brush a, through the channel e, to the outside of the box A. As the disk B revolves the brush a will be kept down on the face of the disk by the spring m, and as the corn-seed in the perforations s pass under the brush a, the brush will slide and sweep away all seed Ilot held in the perforations s; and as the disk B is preferably some thinner than the seed, the brush a will be lifted up by the seed in the perforations passing, and the spring m will bring the brush down again after the passing of each perforation.
By my invention I make all the parts of metal, simple and inexpensive in construction, effective, and of lasting durability.
Having thus set forth and described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is The brush a, having the rounded extension a', the spring m around the extension a', the keeper K, having the channel c, the support d, and the mouth c, in combination with the box A, and with the disk B, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose Set forth.
