FEED-BAG FOR HORSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,048, dated December 20, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that we, HENRYA. HEIsER and FRANK W'HEATON, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the: county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed or Nose Bags for Horses; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has relation to that class of feed or nose bags for horses in which the bottom is provided with perforations, so that the feed will be sifted and relieved of the dust or finer particles of the feed by the natural motion of the horses head. Previous to our invention these bottoms were usually formed of leather, having an annular upturned flange for connecting it to the body of the bag by stitching or sewing, and had a circular opening cut out, over which was fastened a perforated sheet-metal plate. The above construction rendered the ba g very expensive to manufacture, for reasons of the great cost of the leather used and the necessity of fastening the perforated sheet-metal plate thereto. A further objection to the above form of bot tom was the small space occupied by the perforated plate, as it is essential for the efi'ectual and complete sifting or separation of the dust or finer particles of the feed from the coarser that the entire area of the suiface of the bottom should be perforated.

The present invention therefore has for its object to provide a feed or nose bag with a metallic bottom that can be manufactured at a greatly-reduced cost, and that will remove the objections above stated and it consists in forming a sheet-metal bottom from a single piece of material, having an annular flange for securing it to the body of the bag, and having perforations to cover its entire diameter, substantially as shown in the drawings,,and hereinafter described.

desired. be slightly concave upon its inner surface. The bottom B may be either stamped, spun, or otherwise formed of suitablersheet metal, with an annular flange or rim, a, for attaching thereto the lower edgeot'the body A, and said flange or rim is preferably perforated, so as to admit of the body being secured by stitching, this being considered the easiest and most practical way of connecting the two together. It should be noticed that the perforations in the bottom B extend around the entire area of its surface, and therefore unlike the bottoms of the feed or nose bags heretofore in use, thereby giving or presenting to the feed a larger sifting-surface and rendering it more effectual in its purpose.

A sheet-metal bottom constructed in accordance with our invention can be produced at a very small cost, and should it become injured or worthless by constant useitmay bcremoved and a new one substituted without the necessity of throwing away the entire bag, this being done with comparatively little expense or trouble, as the bottom may be attached to the body of the bag by almost any one.

One of the chiefadvantagesof theinvention is that the bottom and the body or rest of the bag will become separate articles of demand and purchase, and thus proving a lighter cost or tax on the parties using or needing them, besides being a stronger and more useful bag than those now in use.

Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improved article'of manufacture, a perforated sheet-metal bottom having a perforated annular vertical flange or rim, substantially as and for the purpose described.
